His efficiency and quiet personality made him everybody's friend. He showed marked ability in handling the finances of his class and athletic organizations. The tragic airplane crash that took Fred from this community on July 11, 1948 was a most heartfelt occurrence. Few of us can ever forget this carefree, popular, and likeable fellow . . . Fred Ashton. STUDENT COUNCIL JUNIORS Soon after school began the candidates tor Student Council campaigned for office. All candidates gave a stump speech in assembly and following this the officers were elected by school ballot. A major accomplishment was the writing and adoption of the constitution. One of the highlights of the year was the opening of the Student Activity room. This room was equipped with a soda pop vending machine. From among those that came to the New World, one little company of twelve Huguenots and their families settled at New Paltz. In 1678, with high hopes and courageous hearts they led their families into the peace and beauty of the Wallkill Valley. Here they settled. Here their descendants have lived, and loved, and prospered to this day. With the founding of the village there was inaugurated a system of government and control unique in all America. The first settlers owned the land in common. The patent was made in equal shares to a copartnership of twelve men. By a communal arrangement of their activities the fruits of their labor went into a common store. For fifty years, the heads of the twelve families met in legislative and executive session to administer the affairs of Ye Paltz. By 1728 the influx of settlers was so marked that for some time the village records were written in Dutch in place of French, the language used during the first forty years of the village's life. The old paternal system of village administration was held inadequate and a council of Twelve Men, The Dusine, was organized. These men were elected by popular vote of all the property owners in the community. The Dusine continued to function until the year 1820. In the following pages, the activities of the present day residents of New Paltz are recorded. But New Paltz has not forgotten the heritage of its beginnings. Huguenot Street and the stone houses stand today as a symbol of the valiant spirit possessed by the early settlers and emulated by their descendants, the people who make up the community of New Paltz today. —Taken in part from the Foreword of Historical Pageant of Old New Paltz. ft. rv. tp aw NEW PALTZ STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE The State Teachers College at New Paltz is one of the few higher educational institutions in the whole Hudson River Valley. Since the War it is growing rapidly in students, faculty, and activities. It plays an important part in the life of the community of New Paltz with members of its faculty acting on many community organizations and activities and with its Campus Elementary School serving as an elementary school and a nursery school for all the children of the New Paltz Central School District. It serves as a center for a College-Community Orchestra, a College-Community Choral Group, a New Paltz Art Association, adult education classes, a science discussion group, an Artist Series Program, and many other community activities. At the same time it is exerting an evergrowing influence in the whole region served by the College. DR. Walsh. The Post was named in honor of two comrades killed in action: Dennis Sullivan and Raymond Shafer. In 1935, sixty-five boys, sons of the veterans of World War I, met at the Legion Hall and so was launched the Squadron 176 of the Sons of the American Legion. The former Methodist Episcopal Church on Church Street, was purchased, at a cost of $4,000, in 1928, by the Post to be used as a Legion Hall. In 1946, money was raised by subscription for the complete remodeling of the Hall. Sixty sons of Post members served in World War II. In 1945, at the end of the war, membership was greatly increased and new activities were undertaken. The American Legion Auxiliary, Sullivan-Shafer Post No. 176, was organized in 1926. Names on the charter were: Mrs. Mary Black Terwilliger, president; Mrs. P. J. Radley, Mrs. Harry Zimmerman, Mrs. Lewis VandeMark, Mrs. Myron D. VandeMark, Mrs. Elting Harp, Mrs. Henry Poucher, Mrs. Herman Ackert, Mrs. Eli DePuy, Miss Helen Parker, Miss Ella Sullivan, Miss Charlesta L. Ean. The Post and its Auxiliary has always tried to do all that was possible to aid any activity or enterprise which seemed worthy and of benefit to the community. The Commander of the Post at this time is Kenneth E. Hasbrouck, and the President of the Auxiliary is Mrs. Daniel Warren. 66 OUR FIRE DEPARTMENT The fire departments of the Village have been many and varied. The first was the Huguenot Engine Company No. I, founded in 1861 and discontinued in '68. A hand engine was its only equipment. In 1889 the Ulster Hook and Ladder Company No. I was organized as a bucket company until the completion of the New Paltz water works in '92 when the Star Hose Company was formed. These two outfits worked in conjunction with each other and the equipment consisted of a Hook and Ladder rig with extension and scaling ladders, axes, fire extinguishers, a hose cart and 750 feet of hose and nozzles. These last two companies merged at about the time of world war I and in 1926 became incorporated. The first power driven truck was purchased in 1921, an American-La France; today’s company, the New Paltz Fire Department, and its modern equipment rate at the top of the State Volunteer Firemen. It is dedicated to the promotion and perpetuation of good fellowship and social interest among its members, and to co-operation in matters pertaining to civic welfare. The members of the Club, and a guest speaker, assemble at dinner meetings which are held bi-monthly. Subjects presented by speakers and the general discussion following have proven a valuable method of bringing a better understanding of scientific and cultural subjects to the Club s members. The membership of the Club is representative of a cross-section of vocational interests, the Club having members from practically every walk-of-life in the community. The Club is limited to a maximum of forty members. Members in picture from left to right: Edward Elmore, TREAS. Its activities cover a wide field; book reviews, citizenship, clothing, family life, food and nutrition, home grounds, home management and housing. The present sixty-five members meet the first Thursday of each month in the Social Room at the High School, and are always ready to serve the community. New members are welcome. Home Bureau Creed To maintain the highest ideals of home life; to count children the most important of crops; to so mother them that their bodies may be sound, their minds clear, their spirits happy, and their characters generous; To place service above comfort, to let loyalty to high purposes silence discordant notes; to let neighborliness supplant hatreds; to be discouraged never; To lose self in generous enthusiasms; to extend to the less fortunate a helping hand; to believe one's community may become the best of communities; and to cooperate with others for the common ends of a more abundant home and community life; This is the offer of the Home Bureau to the homemaker of today. LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS The League of Women Voters was founded in 1919 on the idea that a nonpartisan organization could provide political education and experience which would contribute to the growth of the citizen and thus assure the success of democracy. Our local League at New Paltz was started in 1946, under the presidency of Mrs. William J. Haggerty. It has served the community by publishing a Citizens' Calendar and a Voters’ Handbook, and by distributing information on local, state and national issues. It serves to emphasize that the success of a democracy depends on the willingness of every citizen to bring his intelligence and his life-experience to bear upon the solution of common problems. We have a loan closet which includes two hospital beds, a wheelchair, and crutches among its larger pieces of equipment. Clinics for children of pre-school age are held each month at which mem- bers assist the doctor. We sponsored the Chest X-ray survey which took place in our town in April, 1948. Through the generosity of friends and organizations in the town we are achieving our goal, which is to improve the general health of the community.
