STUDY HALL With a quick recovery from the mystifying incidents in Paltz Central High, we, the class of 1948, entered the last career overflowing with self-confidence. our initial year at New half of our high school We take pride in the fact that the Junior Class is well represented in the three major sports—Basketball, Baseball, and Track. The annual Junior Prom, of course, climaxed our social obligations and was a huge success. CLASS OFFICERS George Mackey ...................................... When classes settled down we elected class officers and chose our representatives to the Student Senate. Early in the term we shared honors with the Freshmen at the annual Welcome Party. Our class was well represented in school activities, including the Band, Glee Club, Art Club, and Journalism. The class was very active in the Red Cross Tuberculosis Drive. Cartoons and articles were submitted, one of which appeared in the Nepa Hi Liles. We, the Sophomores, enjoyed participating in these and other activities of New Paltz High. CLASS OFFICERS Jfrefiijman Class We Freshmen arrived here in September, wishing we had maps to find our way around, asking where the rooms were, and wondering where the labyrinthine halls would lead us next. Almost as soon as we got acquainted with the terrain, mid-years were upon us. The results weren’t at all bad either. In our maiden year as N.P.H.S. students we took part in many activities Intramural Basketball, Glee Club, Journalism, and such. We are looking forward to the next three years here as we become more familiar with our surroundings. They are greatly encouraged to strive towards this goal by awards of the New Paltz Huguenot Grange and the American Agriculturist. Class work of high order, developing a farming program, evidence of thrift and leadership determine these awards. Henry Mertz was the 1946 winner. During this school year, the future farmers were called upon to help finance the new State F. F. A. Leadership Camp. By selling magazine subscriptions and flower seeds, and holding a very successful carnival, they were able to add materially to this fund. Their many and varied activities include: target rifle shooting and contests, social and business meetings, judging and athletic meetings with other F. F. A. chapters in this state. It has made posters, party decorations, prom bids, murals, and conducted assembly programs. Credits were earned by the members and they received a special art emblem after they earned 100 or more points. Page twenty-five :in p f ®lee Club Our ranks have been more than doubled this past year. As a complete group we sang at the May Festival, in Assembly, and at the Spring Conference at Marlboro. We will help give the seniors a royal send-off at graduation. A large select group prepared a varied program of songs for the Annual Competition Festival. A smaller group, consisting mostly of Juniors and Seniors, participated in the N.Y.S.S.M.A. All State Festival last fall at Kingston, N. Y. This group was divided between the All State Mixed Chorus and the Girl's Choir. This same group from our club anticipates singing on a broadcast from WKIP soon. After a few rehearsals a definite number of members were found that could be counted on for their cooperation and maintenance of a good school band. The band was the largest it has ever been with many new members from the Freshman class. We added a new activity this year, that of playing for the basketball games. Players and rooters enjoyed the marches, and other tunes that put all in a fighting spirit for the game. Having hardly recovered, we dc cided to forego our usual O. M. N.-Thespian Christmas Party in favor of a Christmas Basket for some needy family in this locality. Suddenly we find two engagees” among us. So rising to the occasion we threw a big double shower. The next hop took the Senior Thespians to New York and a memorable performance of Joan of Lorraine”. A bigger and better Checkerboard Cafe” was forthcoming in March. It even had an original theme song. As a parting shot we gave a play for assembly. Final thanks to Miss Bantham, our faculty advisor, for helping us. We never realized how little we knew until we were confronted with the typewriters and their blank keys. We were told that the forming of good typing habits such as accuracy and speed were necessary requisites to our typing success. Later, we learned that rhythm was important in acquiring typing skill, and with this in mind, we began typing to music. Before the year was over we found ourselves typing honest to goodness letters, envelopes and tabulations. We are thankful to Miss Zibella for her guidance in helping us solve the mystery of those blank keys. J omc economics; department This year the Home Economics Department was added under the able supervision of Miss Bantham. The courses arc divided into two channels. The Freshmen and Sophomores taking vocational Home Economics A and B respectively in a two period course. The elective subject taken by the Juniors and Seniors follows the other courses in text but for which only one credit is received. Some of the stunning new blouses and dresses which you see around N. P. H. S. were made in the Home Ec. department. Of course, no comment should be needed for the tantalizing aromas that permeate into Study Hall and cause much overactivity of the salivary glands. Our usual functions consist of publishing Neppa-Hi-Litcs and keeping the local population informed on the activities in N.P.H.S. via High School Notes in the Independent. Besides this we presented a one act play, Elmer”, in assembly March 6. We’ve been reaping a little fame, too. One issue of Neppa-Hi-Lites built around the Christmas Seal Drive was packed off for judication in Kingston. We netted a first place for the cartoon, with Alma Mathiesen doing the honors.
