During the Christmas season we carried on a campaign of selling Christmas wreaths. Selling candy at the basketball games was another of our activities. We gave a party towards the end of the season which was successful. As a parting farewell we wish the Seniors success in their vocations; and that we Juniors become as successful as our Seniors; and that the Sophomores become even more successful and prosperous than we. Page twenty-two 193 3 THE HUGUENOT SOPHOMORE CLASS Presidents Clyde Rutherford...................... Home Room I Albert Jensen.......................... Home Room II Having successfully finished our first year in this beautiful Senior High School we Sophomores can proudly look back on the past and hopefully look forward to the future. We have fully cooperated to the best of our ability on every occasion with our teachers and fellow students. Although we haven’t planned for parties and dances we have taken particular notice of the affairs given by other classes so that we as Juniors and Seniors can have entertainments that will be enjoyed and remembered by all who attend them. We hope that Sophomores of future years will derive as much benefit and enjoyment as we Sophomores have. Here’s wishing you luck future Sophomores. 193 3 Page twenty-three MiMMMMMMMMM. THE HUGUENOT DEBATE TEAM Miss Conard .......................... Faculty Advisor This year our reorganized debate team took on new enthusiasm and we were determined to win our way into fame. Our first attempt to display our interest was in joining the League composed of several surrounding cities and towns. For minor practice we held a debate in chapel early in the year which deserves great praise. The subject for the day was Resolved: “That the St. Lawrence waterways project be adopted.” Interest ran high, and it was a difficult problem to decide the victors. However, both sides received an even number of votes. Later in the season a debate was arranged with Ellenville last year’s League champions. The question at issue was “Resolved: That one half local and state revenue should be raised from other sources than tangible property”. Each affirmative side was victorious. We sincerely hope that in future years the debate team will exist with as much support as it had in this current year. I’age twenty-six THE HUGUENOT The Dramatic Club is not an organized society. It consists of all those who participated in plays. “Bill’s Rummage Sale”, a one act farce, was presented at the annual Christmas party. “Have a Piece of Candy”, a short skit was given in assembly. This organization was ably advised by Miss Conard. jSMMWSMSlMMK 1 9 3 3 Paye twenty-seven THE HUGUENOT GLEE CLUB .... President Vice President .... Secretary Treasurer ...... Advisor Blanche Gulnac . The girls have contributed special numbers in assembly, and have held social parties in the gymnasium. In January we attended the Lyceum course in the Newburgh High School featuring the Don Cossack Chorus. Five dollars was paid from our treasury toward the purchase of the radio which is now installed in the gym. In May our operetta “Polished Pebbles” was presented to the public, and with that we ended the year successfully and profitably. UJMM 1 9 3 3 Page twenty-eight THE HUGUENOT 0. M. N. The Orchestra organized rather late in the year but a late start was better than none at all. We owe a great deal to the school board as they willingly contributed funds for a director for our needs. Captain James Reid Manager John Kickham ................................. Coach The New Paltz High School Basketball team of 1932-3 had a fairly successful season considering the inexperience of the team. Under the capable leadership of Coach “Jack” Kickham the boys succeeded in winning 1 out of 15 games. The only veterans on this season’s squad were Captain Moran and Savago. Captain Pete Moran played a very fine defensive game in his back-court position. His expert guarding saved the game for us on several occasions. As captain of the team, he used good judgment. “Jimmie” Reid led the locals scoring attack with an average of 8 points per game. Due to his consistant shooting, they were able to stay in the running in many games. He was very valuable on the defense. 3333.3333.3333?3.333333 THE HUGUENOT 3333333.333333.33.33.33.3 “Sam” Savago showed up well in the other forward position. He was very good on offense. The rougher the game was, the better “Sam liked it. “Stretch” Beebe held down the center position. He was one of the mainstays on the locals passing attack, and he played a good defensive game. “Chet” Decker played the other guard position, as Moran’s running mate. He was the most improved boy on the team, and he could always be depended upon. “Puff” Palmer held down the center position, very well, when he was called upon. “Puff” could outjump the best of them. Winfield, also, was a reliable center. “Bill” Hasbrouck, George Zimmerman and “Les” Decker, showed up well in their guard positions, whenever the opportunity came, and they could hold up their end of the game. Seward’s consistent shooting, and Mae’s fine passing were the features of our offense. Tremper, Lucy, Fitch, and VanValen were the back-court stars.
