Text from Pages 1 - 40 of the 1932 volume:

The Class of Nineteen Hundred Thirty-two extends to the school board its sincere appreciation for loyal cooperation, constant inspiration and good fellowship shown to us in the new High School building. . .................... 3 LOCAL SCHOOL HOARD OF NEW PALTZ CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL President H. G. Gregory, New Paltz Treasurer 1). C. Seward, New Paltz ('lerk H. H. Grimm, New Paltz Lester Harvey, New Paltz E. C. Elmore, New Paltz K. E. Vanderlyn, New Paltz John Mohan, Gardiner 4 j OR YEARS New Paltz has wanted a new high school, and we are || indeed fortunate to have such a beautiful one. Students of the past have felt pride and joy in their “Alma Mater”, but we are certain with all onr new advantages of equipment we shall be able to send forth an even better trained student body. The new high school offers varied types of work: for instance, through the use of the finely equipped laboratory one can discover an awakening interest in the field of science. From the commercial department one can enter the business world. The auditorium, so long desired, will prove the center of athletic and social life. Therefore we wish to thank the school board and people of the centralized school district who have made such a fine community center possible. 5 FACULTY Raymond G. Marie Bell Secretary...........................Marie Le Feyre Treasurer .... Ruth Van Valen Faculty Advisor—Miss Levinson N THE early part of our school year, we Juniors introduced a novelty by purchasing hats of our class colors, green and silver. Although we have not been in the headlines in the way of parties, candy sales, and other activities, several of our members have assisted in plays and at the annual Christmas party. As a whole, we have tried to help our fellow students along the highway to fortune and success. 15 SOPHOMORE CLASS Presidents Home room I Gordon Wood Home room JI Betty Paul Homeroom III Florence Moran 3 SEPTEMBER there was such a large Sophomore Class that it had to be divided into three groups. Home room I is advised by Mr. Yoight, home room II by Miss Conard, and home room III by Miss Cornell and Mr. Kiekham. The Sophomores on the whole have held successful cake and candy sales. Home room II gave a Hollowe’en party last fall to start off their social activities. Under the motto “Semper Parati” much has been accomplished by each room. DRAMATIC CLUB 9 T THE beginning of the year a Dramatic Club was organized by Miss Conard. This club was popular from the start and has been active during the year. Four plays have been presented. “The Economical Boomerang”, a farce, was presented at the Sophomore’s Hallowe’en Party. “Excerpts from Pickwick Papers,” and “Pyramus and Thysbe,” were presented at the School’s (’llristmas Party. At assembly one week another farce, “Meet Mr. Thompson,” was presented. With this start, we hope to produce many plays next year. 17 POLITICAL SCIENCK FOIU'M Fred DuBois, Jr....................... President Elizabeth IIasBrouck Vice-President Myrna Wiseman .... Secretary Helen V. Bowen.........................Treasurer Sue Bruyn ) ( . Current Event Committee Sam Savago ) Advisor—Mr. Voight POLITICAL Science Forum was organized by the Seniors under the supervision of our History teacher Mr. Voight. The purpose of this club is to increase the members’ knowledge of world events and present day politics. The members of the club arc divided into two committees, who take turns having charge of the meetings held every Friday. We hope that the Seniors of next year will meet with even greater success. 18 GIRLS GLEE CLUB President .... Vice-President Secretary .... Treasurer Advisor—Miss Blanche Gulnac Elaine Kniffen Florence Moran Ruth Van Yalen E. Cornell HE GIRLS Glee Club is a musical organization composed of thirty-seven members, who have contributed to the entertainment of various programs. In January we made members. Each member that as new members are great success. all sorts of plans for the initiation of I he new taken in received his share of fun. We hope added to this organization they will meet with 19 DEBATE TEAM DEBATE was held in assembly the latter part of January. Interest ran high. The subject was “Resolved, That O.ir High School Should Have a Student Council.” The judges (members of the faculty) gave the decision to the Seniors who supported the negative in a sprightly manner in spite of lack of material. The Juniors, they said, had more facts and sound reasoning, but not as successful delivery or wit in rebuttal. Miss Conard hopes to have more debating this year in order to continue the good work of previous years. The debating team this year consisted of: Juniors Marie Bell Andrew Thompson Edmund Beebe James Reid Seniors Madelon Freer Lewis Jayne Albert Dodd Samuel Savago 20 VARSITY BASKETBALL Captain.......................Isaac Bell Manager...................Walter Dunham Coach—John Kickham team of 31-32, although it fell short of winning the “NOSU |j league hy a margin of one game, will long he remembered. This season ended the high school basketball careers of Ike” Bell, “Beb” Barnes, “Toots” DuBois, “Walt” Dunham and Jim” Moran. All of these boys will be remembered as members of the wonder team of 30-31. So much for ancient history, let's look back over the last campaign. Under the capable direction of Coach Jack Kickham the boys won 12 games and lost 8. Once again found Ike” Bell, the leading scorer of the league. Playing the pivot position and a spotted player.” Captain Bell managed to average 13 points a game. In the forward positions, found Captain-elect “Pete” Moran and Walt Dunham. Pete played a bang up game all season and really deserves the honor the boys have bestowed upon him, by electing him captain. Dunham as in other years was one of the mainstays of the team. In the guard position “Jim” Moran and “Beb Barnes showed up well. Barnes with his bullet like passes and unexpected shots won the admiration of everyone. “Jim” Moran played the other position with the coolness of a veteran. “Toots” DuBois alternating at the guard position with Moran was the most improved player on the squad. “Lee” Coddington and Sam Savago along with “Pete” Moran should form a fine nucleons for a fast outfit next year. 21 Marie Bell (Captain) Madelon Freer Ruth Seward ELIZA BETII IIAsBHOUCK IA R JO RIE T REM PE R GIRLS BASKETBALL Ruth Van Valen (Manager) May Dietrich Ruth Fitch Mildred Zimmerman Frances Buchanan Mary Lucy Coach—Mr. Kickham Rtf'llK GIRLS Basketball team started the season of 1981 ami 1982 with our new coach, Mr. Kickham. Our ambition was to win the cup in the NOSL league. But we had to be contented with winning seven games out of nine and tying one. Probably the most exciting game was the one played with Maybrook on our own court; when after the visitors had lead for nearly the whole time, our girls rallied with a great burst of speed and tied the score in the last couple minutes of play. Considering all, the girls teams were stronger this year with the exception of Marlboro. This record is not one to be ashamed of. “Bell” was high scorer for the team. “Freer” and “Tin” HasBrouek who have played with the team for three years will be members of the graduating class. Whatever measure of success the girls team attained is due to the efforts of our able coach, Mr. Kickham. 22 .JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL ('oacli—JOH N KickhAM jfEOR tlie first time. New Paltz was represented on the courts by a TJ 'second team. Under the direction of Coach Jack Kickham this team won .5 games and lost 1. The brilliant showing the team made on the courts this year make prospects for the coming year bright. “Jimmie” Reid, was the leading scorer with an average of 14 points a game. “Fog” Glaney in the other forward position, gave “Jimmie” a running mate, who was an excellent offense and defensive man. “Puff” Palmer, playing at center gives promise of stepping in and tilling the hole left by Bell. “Stretch” Beebe, the invincible guard gives promise of developing into a star backeourt man. George Zimmerman, “Al” Dodd and Roy Upright also gave good exhibitions when the time called for it. 43 (). M. N. SORORITY President V ice- President Secret art Treasurer Critic . Advisor . Mary Lucy . M adelon Freer Frances Buchana n Charlotte Oates Marie Bell Miss Pendleton -ftOT UNTIL jiL gave a rush October did any real work begin in our sorority. We party for our prospects, and all the girls who were rushed accepted. There were seven in number. After a long tiresome week of initiation, the girls became pledges, and within a week from that time were full fledged members. We held numerous food and candy sales during the year which were always successful. On February 29, we held a “Leap Year Dance” at the Legion Hall, and we made approximately eighty dollars. This gave us the needed amount for our New York trip, which certainly needs no mentioning. 24 FOLK OF ’82 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 7. 8. ). 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. 17. 18.
