GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL Captain......................Minnie Lasher Manager.........................Mary Lucy TV r() EMBER saw the girls of the High School meeting in the gym to have y their first tryouts. The team was quickly chosen as there were only two weeks before the first game. Then we were confronted with a big question, ■'Were we to join the N 0 S U League?” The answer was “Yes”. Due to Miss Eckles’ coaching we improved our passing and teamwork which enabled us to win nine out of twelve games played in the NOSU League. This gave the N. P. H. S. Girls second place. Two of our players will march away with the cap and gown procession, but we have able substitutes to take their places. Much credit is due Miss Eckles, our coach, for her faithful and tireless efforts throughout the year. Pep meetings were held every Friday morning for the purpose of learning the various cheers submitted. Cheering under the direction of these leaders greatly aided our basket-ball games, and afforded inspiration for our team’s victories. We hope that greater success in cheer-leading will follow in the new school. 23

BOYS’ BASKET-BALL Captain.................................Isaac N. Bell Manager..............................Walter Dunham rllE 1930-31 season was the most successful season in the history of New Paltz High School basket-ball. The boys’ team not only won the N O S U league cup, but they also won 18 out of 20 games played. Mr. Cunningham deserves much credit for turning out a championship team. It was his keen knowledge of the game and the instilling of this knowledge into the minds of his players that made it possible to chalk up so many victories. Captain “Ike” Bell can easily be called the scoring ace of the team. Bell’s speedy play and unfailing accuracy netted him 331 points for his season’s work. “Walt” Dunham who teams up with “Pete” Moran in a forward berth, acquired the name of “Flash” for his last minute goal against Marlboro which turned defeat into victory. “Pete” Moran, forward or guard, hit his stride about the middle of the season and played good ball thereafter. “Beb” Barnes, the husky guard, enjoyed a good season. This blond-haired lad, although not a scoring threat, saved many a game. “Elt” Harp, played his last year for the Maroon and White. As In other years, “Ell” again enjoyed one filled with success. “Jim Moran and “Sam” Savago were another pair of good forwards, and played good basket-ball all year. “Jimmy” Sherman, Bell’s understudy, gave a good exhibition of what he could do when opportunity came for him to play. 25
