New Oxford Senior High School 1985 Memento Alma Mater Hail to thee our Alma Mater Hail New Oxford High With our colors proudly flying on Land, on Sea, in Sky. Maroon and Gray live for aye in our hearts and our memories. Here and now we pledge allegiance and our loyalty. In Memory David Smith Kimberly Smith January 31, 1967 — November 3, 1979 February 17, 1967 — May 26, 1984 Dale Turner November 20, 1963 — May 13, 1980 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Looking back on the past three years at N.O.H.S. we see how much we have, as a class. As sophomores, we had to build our first float for Homecoming. We didn’t know could be so difficult or time consuming, but we did it by workingtogether. To make us feel like Colonials we ordered our class rings and jackets. As jun iors, we were faced with the problem of raising money for the prom. We knocked on many doors trying to persuade many people ptfbuy our pocket calendars, ham and cheese sandwiches, wicks and tins, and candy. A lot of time, planning, and work went into the prom and again we did it by working together. We chose the song, Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You(” as our theme. As graduating seniors we have to face the real world one-on-one! We must now say Good- bye” to New Oxford High, but wJwill always treasure, in our hearts and minds, the great times we have had these last three years. We have made friendshipos that will last forever and at the same time we have gotten an education that will continue to grow. We hope as we go forward that we can contribute our knowledge toward helping mankind. that in mind, the Class of 1985 leaves one message to Ijeve in yourself and all things are possible.' ith class that follow: The 1 Student Council Officers Mr. Lee Rentzel — Advisor Steve Fretz — Treasurer Cindy Sanders — Secretary Jenny Bittinger — Vice- Pres. You’re wondering if we’ll turn out right or wrong, We’re wondering why we have to leave you behind. You’ve made this place a second home. Even though we said we didn’t want to be here, What would we do without it? You’ve helped us get this far And we need your help just a little bit more . . . Enough to help us make it to the top And share our happiness. Just enough to cushion our falls And help us get up again. You’ve influenced everything we’ve done. You’ve told us when we’ve been wrong And complimented us when we’ve been right For this and everything We thank you From the bottom of our hearts. We want you to know You’ll always be there. They gave their dedi- cation to the sport and showed great respect for the coaches and fellow team members. The 1984 season marked the first year that the entire team went to a camp. They spent a full week at Camp Conewago practicing the basics: Blocking, passing, catching, and so on. After a hard days' workout the players also enjoyed the normal pranks and initiations. The season started very slowly with a few disappointing games, but the players had a strong will to win and eventually overcame James Buchanan and Greencastle to establish a 2-7-1 record. Although their record of 2-11-1 does not show it, the wrestlers and fans certainly sensed that improvement. The last two matches, one of which was tied and the other won, were evidence of this fact. The team accomplished a feat which has nev- er been seen by New Oxford High School: six of the twelve varsity wrestlers advanced to the first round of District wrestling. Since the team is only losing three members to graduation, this is a preview of the future. ill THE 1984 CHESS TEAM Bryan Dewease The 1984 New Oxford Senior High Chess Team expected a rebuilding year, but came out surprising a lot of teams. The team members include: Seniors. Bryan Dewease, Tom Yake, and Jay Shultz, a transfer student from Gettysburg; Sophomore Fred O'Brien; and Freshman, Scott Bowman and Mike Sechrist. We found Mike Breighner in the Graphics room. Jill Tyler works on the computer. For many weeks our roving camera was out trying to get your picture. We searched classrooms, hallways and the lobby looking for you. For those of you who were missed we apologize. At the start of our 1984-85 school year, we were all quite unaware of the two bright surprises we were about to encounter that first day of school. We all immediately were drawn to the two cheerful smiles we received from Madde Alvesborg and Luis Amors. Madde, a native of Sweden, left her home country and came to try her luck in America. While staying with the McGonigal family, she has become one of the crowd in class as well as out. She has engaged in chorus, basketball, and also softball. She has made friends every- where she turned. And-ah yes — Luis, that fantastic person with the wonderful sense of humor has also given this school year unlimited pleasure. He has made friends in every class. He participated in Track and given the mood one was in, Luis could always develop a smile. How can we ever find the strength to say good-bye” to Madde and Luis? Perhaps we can always hold a part of them within our hearts: Keep in touch friends — We’ll miss you. 138 139 Luis Amoros Academic Ham Radio Club 2, 3.
