The past three years were filled with achievements and dis- appointments. We, as Seniors, may look back and feel proud of what we have accom- plished as a class. As Sophomores, we took on different responsibilities. For the first time, we had to build a float for Homecom- ing. We didn't have a place to put it, so we had to build it on the stage. We attended our first high school dances, and ordered our jackets and rings. We walked the halls feel- ing lost and uninvited. As Juniors, we had a feeling of moving up and getting closer to our final goal. We felt proud as we earned enough money for the prom. Then we pulled together as a class to come up with our prom theme, “Open Arms.” As we look back, the prom was one of our greatest achievements. We also started thinking about looking for jobs and picking out colleges. Now we are Seniors and we look forward to graduating. We had a lot of fun exchang- ing Senior Pictures, and we enjoyed our class trip. Our Senior Year is the climax of twelve years of learning, growing, and mak- ing friends. Graduation is an ending, yet the beginning of a lifetime. We will always keep the memories of New Oxford High close to our hearts. The Class of 1984 leaves one message: Better Than Before — The Class of 1984. Denise C. Aumen Kimberly A. Becker Anthony M. Brewer Chris E. Brown Laura D. Baker Martha M. Boring ' • Christina G. V. 90 Miss Sue Hagie Miss Cheryl Peterson Laura Baker Holly VonSas The 1983 FIELD HOCKEY TEAM finished its season with a 4- 32 record. The team’s leadership responsibilities fell to co-captains Laura Baker and Holly VonSas, the only seniors. These girls led the team both on the field and during practices. Their encouragement helped to increase team spirit and to lead the team to victory. This team's greatest quality was willingness to work together as a team. These girls worked very well together and they tried to work with other teammates who needed extra help and encouragement. Although a tie is often consid- ered to be an unsatisfactory end to a game, one of our best games this season resulted in a 0-0 tie with Biglerville. This tie marked the first time in five years that the CO- LONIALS were not defeated by the Canners. We consider this well- played game and our winning re- cord to be our greatest accom- plishments of the season. Sophomore Dawn Richardson takes the ball up field. Junior Cheri Hoff and Senior Holly VonSas pass the ball against Biglerville. Junior Jenny Bittinger steals the ball and Senior Laura Baker comes in to assist. Senior Chris Rollins who placed first among the Colonials in all meets, finished third in the Adams County Meet, and ninth in the Blue Mountain Conference Meet. His time of 15:46 is the fifth fastest by a New Oxford runner and thirty-ninth fas- test ever on the 2.85 mile course. He also holds the school's sophomore and junior course record. Other sen- iors on the team included Judy Neiderer, the lone senior on the girls' squad; Shawn Boyers; Brian Costello; and Mike Dayhoff. Judy Neiderer placed fourth in the Adams County Meet before running a 19:29 time at home. This was the second fastest by a New Oxford female runner and the eighth fastest by any girl on the course. She led the LADY COLONIALS in meets and her seventh place finish in the Blue Mountain Conference was the highest by any New Oxford runner. Next year's team will attempt to improve upon this season’s record as the boy's return four letter winners and the girls returning five. % Judy Neiderer dashes across the finWBine. Consisting of freshmen, Eric Reitzel and Dean Krout; sophomores, Scott Hoover and Brad Fleet; and juniors, Darryl Wheeler and Jon Weaver, the team was extremely young and inexperienced. Only Darryl Wheeler had previously competed in golf. Consequently, the season’s record reflected the lack of experience. However, this group proved the theory that success is not always measured in wins and losses. With dedication and hard work, they managed to show great improvement as a team throughout each week of the season. As a result, the outlook for the golf team seems brighter next year and for some years to come. Freshman Eric Reitzel tees off and takes a swing while other teammates discuss strategies. From the beginning of summer practice the team searched for the right mix. Experience was the missing ingredient. The lack of this im- portant ingredient was all too evident in the early games of the season as the team struggled. These struggles provided the team with the opportunity to prove its character. Week in and week out they work hard to establish themselves as a competitive team. This persis- tence finally paid off in the final two weeks of the season with back to back victories over Scotland and James Buchanan. The success of the 1983 football season can not be mea- sured by victories or defeats. The measure of the 1983 COLONIALS must be their ability to perserve against odds and pull together to accomplish their goals. ■MM Senior Joe Sanders (11) prepares to make a tackle while Senior Jeff Hartlaub (37) runs back after the play. After beating Northeastern at home, we struggled through the first half of the season winning seven and losing seven. During the Christmas break we participated in the seventh annual New Oxford Tourna- ment. After losing a close game to Delone we avenged an earlier loss to Southeastern. The team entered second half play losing to Biglerville but still hopeful of coming on strong in the late season. A number of underclass have gained valuable exper- ience and the future looks bright. Scott Wolf, a sophomore guard, and Matt Miller, a junior center, have started most games. Mike Klunk, Bob Hartlaub, and Matt Miller, ju- niors. have been playing well. Coach Conrad Alison Conrad Sharon Fillmann ilfi Lisa Luther Christy Smith Holly VonSas SENIORS The 1983-84 season was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the LADY CO- LONIALS. After losing four starters to graduation, the girls were picked to fin- ish somewhere in the middle of the B.M.L. However, the LADY COLO- NIALS, through hard work and commit- ment. found themselves in the thick of the league race for the championship. The team was lead in scoring by Beth Rollins, junior, and Amy Hafer, sopho- more; in rebounds by Hafer and Elaine Wolf, freshmen; and in assists by Alison Conrad, senior. Christy Smith, senior, and Deb Zickafoose and Sandy Boyers, juniors, could always be relied on for their tough defense. Patty Kuhn, fresh- man. could always be counted on to start a rally. Holly VonSas, Sharon Fill- mann. and Lisa Luther, seniors, lent much needed bench support. Although the team was very young and it was supposed to be a rebuilding year, the LADY COLONIALS again displayed discipline, commitment and a continuance of the winning tradition. 114 OjOOfn.OO'SJ- COUJ OQS Mike Dayhoff Lance Bill Jim Millar Plummer Robertson SENIORS Steve Willard 118 Dawn Phelps and Dawn Sell- hamer work well together. KERSTIN MARIA Late last summer, Kerstin Neumeister a native of Sveg, Sweden, arrived in New Oxford yearning for a taste of ‘ Small town America. We, at NOHS, are immensely pleased that we were the ones able to give Kerstin this experience. With the help of her hosts, the Donald Bowman family, Kerstin began to make the adjustments necessary to life in the United States. This transition into our culture seemed to come naturally to Kerstin. Not being one to stand in the background. Kerstin immediately joined both Choir and Band. Her outstanding musical talent made her a welcome addition to both organizations. Participation in these groups provided Kerstin with a large circle of friends and a source of comfort during the homesick times. In no time at all, she began to fit in. So well, in fact, that it is sometimes easy to forget that she is from another country. We, too, have learned a great deal from our association with Kerstin. She has enlightened us as to how others live, sharing her country's tra- ditions. language and point of view. She has shown us courage, sincerity, understanding and a lively sense of adventure. All of us have greatly enjoyed our new found friend from distant shores and hope that her year here will fill her with memories of our lives, our families and our town that she will always cherish. Good Luck, our dear friend. 144 9 The 1984 145 The Memento was put together through long hours of working, thinking, and drawing. But it could not have been completed without the cooperation of ad- ministration, faculty, and students. All tolerated the many interuptions on picture taking days. I would like to personally thank my staff, Sandy Deatrick, Kim DePaulis, Mamie Drago, Vonita Groft, Deb Grube, Donna Smith, Audrey Sosna, Sue Wingert, and Brenda Warrenfeltz; artists, Denise Aumen, Deb Duttera, Beth Livelsberger, Beth Rollins, Christy Smith, Kristi Sponseller, and Holly VonSas; and pho- tographers, Mike Dayhoff, Todd Newman, Steve Roth, and Kevin Shank. Mr. Larry Kinniman, from Ziegler’s Studio, spent countless hours taking pictures that tell the story of the 1983-84 school year. Mrs. Mary Ryman gave her time so the divider pages were just right . 1 would like to express my sincerest thank-you. This is your book of memories. In years to come, I hope you will often turn to the 1984 Memento and relive the cherished moments. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all those people involved in the making of The 1984 Memento. Hopefully, this book records the events that form lasting memories.
