It is gratifying that each graduating class takes with it memories of an exciting and fulfilling school experience. Our nation — our way of life is being tested. The youth of our nation through their leadership, morality, dedication to American ideals and their belief in the future of our great nation will meet the test. As I look at this group of seniors, I feel secure in our future. You control our future. Tomorrow is yours. Use your ability, your enthusiasm for life. Achieve your joy, happiness and success. It is my prayer that your experience at New Oxford High School will serve you well. 18 You are the 69th class to graduate from and become a part of the history of New Oxford High School. You are also the 69th class to carry the history of New Oxford High School out into future society, for each of you has been shaped by and bears the marks of the experiences you have had at New Oxford. Some of these experiences may have come as sudden insights so exciting that they have been burned upon your memory never to be forgotten, or they may have come through slow, monotonous drills that now leave you at a loss to say when you really did come to learn by them. Some could have been the shining examples of a popular teacher or student in a singular happening, or they could have been the quiet, unsung but steady exemplary lives of one of these and many others. Maybe they were the victory in some contest; and the defeat in another. Mr. Cleo M. Wildasin Superintendent It is not for us to see it all clearly or to know what the future holds, but the experiences planned were with the hope that the society in which you will participate will be one that continues to value the worthiness of each individual, a society that looks to a democracy to govern us, a free enterprise system to meet our economic needs, and a God to guide us spiritually and morally toward justice. We hope that you shall never know war, but may the school experiences, from the classroom to the playing field, also help you to meet any threats to peace and give you the resolve, character, skills, and knowledge needed to defend what your conscience tells you is worth defending, even at the cost of your life. Finally, and above all else, it is a good life lived in peace that we wish for all of the members of the Class of ’81 honored by this yearbook. 19 The years roll around swiftly and I am sure you can hardly believe your high school days are now only a memory. May you always display the virtues you have learned and be conscientious in all your endeavors. Our nation is in need of a younger generation who stresses such virtues as integrity, loyalty, and courage. Expect only the best from others and never give less in return. Mr. Edgar A. Reitzel Vice Principal As graduating seniors, most of you have made the all important decision . .. “What will 1 do with my life?” Surely it is one of the most important decisions you will ever be called upon to make. In a host of occupations and businesses, new goals are waiting to be won. Young people everywhere are moving into a position to compete for those goals and will need to take every opportunity to reach those goals through hard work and love of mankind. For many, the only limits to your success will be the limits of your own ambition. Congratulations and best wishes to each of you in your future endeavors. 20 Mr. Lewis D. Mrs. Crawford, Mrs. Myers, Mrs. Huffman, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Rodgers Michelle Keffer, Pres. We are the class of 81 and we are proud — proud of our school and proud of us. Through our four years at New Oxford we have grown as individuals and as a class. The mistakes we made as naive freshmen, the experience we gained as sophomores, the anticipation we felt as juniors all have been guilding up to this point of our senior year. We have been an involved and enthusiastic class which reflects in all our school activities. Through our hard work and dedication we have excelled in all our high school endeavors. In sports, music, and drama we have made our mark, made New Oxford High a name synonymous with Pride. In the past years we have put forth time and effort to finance our activities by selling almost anything imaginable. School jackets and rings showed our loyalty to our school, while posters and those “lickum sticks” represented our class individuality. Our efforts were rewarded as we experienced a feeling of accomplishment watching couples dance through “Shadows in the Moonlight.” The prom was a success and we were proud of our creativity. By working side by side, experiencing successes and failures, we have become a close and unified class. This feeling will continue long after graduation. Now we must leave New Oxford High School and it is for future classes to walk in our footsteps, to experience and grow. We leave them a legacy and it is a legacy of pride. We want them to remember as we, the class of 81, will always remember deep in our hearts: We are Colonials and We are Proud Class Color — Class Flower — Class Song — Class Motto — Rose and Silver Roses tinted with class colors “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now” To live your life your own way, To reach for the goals you have set for yourself To be the you that you want to be That is success! We give our sincere thanks for advising the class of‘81 to Mr. Ron Demko and Miss Me-leah Goulden. 34 Vicki J. Appier Crystal R. Arndt Kathy A. Artrip Kevin W. Baker Jacqui L. Baker Doreen C. I Doctor at work. 78 79 IN MEMORIAM James Robert Eline Ever Close In Mind And Heart No further away than a picture, A smile or remembered phrase, Our loved ones live in memory— So close in so many ways. For how often does a sunset Bring nostalgic thoughts to mind Of moments that our loved ones shared In days now left behind! How often has a flower. Or a crystal autumn sky Brought golden recollections Of happy days gone by! Memory has a magic way Of keeping loved ones near — Ever close in mind and heart Are the ones we hold most dear. When the funds are low and the debts are high. And you want to smile, but you have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest, if you must — but don’t you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a failure turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out; Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow-You might succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering man. Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the victor’s cup And he learned too late, when the night slipped down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out-The silver tint of the clouds of doubt-And you can never tell how close you are. It may seem near when it seems afar. So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit-It’s when things seem worst that you musn’t quit. -Unknown A book of memories is the phrase that best describes the 1981 Memento. The cover looks to be one of an ancient manuscript carefully tended for years to preserve what is inside. This book is also a treasure house of pictures to be tended and stored. Years from now we will sit and reflect back over our friends, accomplishments, and activities and this yearbook will aide us. The staff of the Memento has spent many evenings after school to compile this for you. As editor I am very grateful for a staff so dedicated and hardworking. I am also thankful for a faculty and administration who are always willing to cooperate. However, I am especially grateful to you, the students of New Oxford, who make up this book. Remember, don’t quit, push to the end, for this is only the beginning of the rest of your life.
