Class History THE year 1942 saw a new and, if we must sav so ourselves, colorful Freshman Class enter the dignified precincts of that well-known in- stitute of learning, New Oxford High School. Pleasure driving was banned this year, and there were many other unusual occurrences which made our freshman year unforgettable. As Frosh, many of us partici- pated in sports. Our class was represented in the play, One Mad Night,” which finally developed into one mad night for the cast. The next fall we entered school as the new Sophomore Class, and be- came aware of the fact that school has a serious as well as a light side to it. We began to realize that our teachers were our friends and our advisors, instead of living terrors whose only purpose was to make life miserable for all of us unfortunate enough to be under them. Strange as it now seems, many of us had that idea at the time. Several sophomores were active in sports, dramatics, and music. We had two very enjoyable parties which will never be forgotten by those who attended. In the fall of 1944, the beginning of our junior year, we found many changes in our school programs. We were given more privileges, but we were taught an important lesson in life—that with these privileges go re- sponsibilities. For the first time in our school career, we were allowed to select our own courses. The highlight of our junior year was the farewell party we gave for the seniors. We made the gym resound with gayety while we danced, played games, and ate sandwiches and ice cream. And now our big moment is here! We are seniors at last! Last fall when we entered our senior year we were determined to succeed, and we endeavored to put our best into our school work. Looking back over our high school days, we now realize that what our elders told us during that time is true. School is fun, and we will miss it when we are graduated. We feel our senior year has been a great success. The local Youth Committee helped to sponsor dances; and we sold refreshments at these dances and at basketball games. The financial gain realized from these enterprises helped to make it possible for us to publish this Memento. Our class presented a three-act comedy, Young April,” which was held February 28 and March 1. Our play was unique because all nine- teen members of the class participated in it. At the end of the term we hope to be able to take the traditional senior trip which the last few classes were unable to enjoy because of war-time restrictions. Our class is fortunate in that it will be entering a peaceful, and we hope, a prosperous post-war world. We are confident that our high school days have laid a foundation upon which we may establish our hopes for peaceful and successful lives in tomorrow’s world. H 14
