With the final O.K. from the NASA scientists, Dr. Stulken, NASA Team Leader, opened the hatch and was the first to welcome the three astronauts back to earth after their historic rendezvous with the Russian Soyuz capsule in space. First to exit was Brigadier General Stafford, Apollo Commander. l Next was Slayton, Command Module Pilot followed by Brand, Docking Module Pilot. 5 With the band playing and cameras flashing, the three Apollo astronauts were ushered to the stage for a brief Welcome Home ceremony aboard NEW ORLEANS before beginning medical examinations scheduled throughout the evening. Captain Ralph E. Neiger, Com- manding Officer of NEW ORLEANS, was Master of Ceremonies. Will all head bowed in quiet appreciation NEW ORLEANS' Chaplain, Commander R. E. Trent, offered a prayer of thanks for the safe return of the Apollo astronauts. First to speak was Captain Neiger. Speaking for the officers and men of NEW ORLEANS, he welcomed the astronauts aboard. Captain Neiger also expressed his ap- preciation for being a part of the recovery of the Apollo astronauts. Following his speech, Captain Neiger introduced Rear Admiral R. Wentworth, Commander Task Force 140. Admiral Wentworth began his speech by. con- gratulating the astronauts on their successful mission. After a short welcome home speech Admiral Wentworth turned the time over to Brigadier General D. Hartung, Department of Defense Manager for Space Flight Sup- port Operations. A short history of space exploration was the main topic of the Generalfs speech. He ended his speech by introducing astronaut Stafford. Astronaut Stafford was succeeded by short talks from Slayton and Brand. A highlight of the ceremony was a telephone call from President Gerald Ford in Washington to the three astronauts. After which they departed the ceremony to begin medical examinations.
