During the morning of July 29, 1981 everyone sits glued to their television sets as Prince Charles and Lady Di exchange their wedding vows. Lady Di starts the trend of long formal wedding gowns. 1. Voyager I detects a faint ring of rocky debris around Jupiter. 2. Barney Clark receives the first permanent artifical heart. 3. Bill Rodger wins the Boston Marathon with the record breaking time of 2:09.27. The Iranian’s seize the United States Am bassy and hold fourty-ninc Americans hostage. United States citizens band together as a united front to support the return of the hostages. The rescue attempt headed by President Carter is a fiasco. The country anxiously awaits their safe and speedy return. After four hundred and fourty-four grueling days for the hostages as w’cll as the Americans back home, the captives arc finally freed. Three major assassination attempts were made during this time period. The only successful attempt was on December 8, 1980, when John Lennon is killed by a fanatic’s bullet. This was certainly the most shocking event in rock music’s history. The other assassination attempts were on President Reagan and Pope John Paul II. These attempts were not successful and the victims were only wounded. Mr. Devin 1952 Mr. Devin has been with ub for 36 years, unci has held all positions at New Milford, from teaching to principal. He now coaches boys cross country and last year was given the honor of being inducted into the ( T Qinches Hall of Fame. Mr. Devin feels that the ability of the high school athletes has remained the same but their dedication has increased over the years. His dedlcaUon as a coach has brought numerous teams to the championship level, too numerous to mention. Everyone who has been coached by Mr. Devin has the greatest respect for him and claim “he Is the best coach they've ever had.” Mt. St. Helens, for years an inactive volcano suddenly errupts spewing ashes and molten lava over the state of Washington. Eight people are killed and many other peoples lives are disrupted. 1979 The 1980 Winter Olympics is a great success. Eric Heiden wins his fifth gold medal in speed skating and the U.S. hockey team amazes the world by defeating the Russians and the Finns to capture the gold for the second time in the history of the United States. The Summer Olympics in Moscow has the lowest attendance ever. The United States, West Germany and .Japan do not attend. 26

Jimmy Carter, a peanut farmer and fomcr governor of Georgia, is elected president. Carter is the first man from the deep South to become president in 125 years. He defeats President Ford in a close election. He credits his victory to his showing in the televised debates between the two candidates. Jaws is a thriller! Saturday Night Fever hits the disco scene by storm. Star Wars and the Force are a box office smash. Superman becomes every boys hero and every girls dream Rocky mukes its debut and paves the way for others to come. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a favorite for all ages. Other favorite movies are The Godfather Part II, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, All the President’s Men, and The Enforcer. In television, “Waltons” and “Happy Days” made their debut, as TV networks try to reduce violence on TV. Roots draws 80 million view ers, the largest audience ever. The Dallas saga starts, and Wonderwoman captures the heurts of children and men alike, 1978 Ford is introducing the Pinto Pony, but Volkswagon Is phasing the Bug out of the United States market. People are living alone—and liking it! Kids are wearing T-shirts with writing on it. Zoologists observer World Whale Day. First protest staged at a nuclear plant. Carter offers farm aid after protest. Families begin to leave'Love Canal. The gasoline shortage becomes worse than ever. In New York, more than half of the gas stations were closed down due to a lack of gas. Open stations have lines up to six miles long and w'ere limiting sales up for three dollars per visit. Nadia Comanici stuns the w'orld wdth her gymnastics ability. Hank Aaron hits 750 homeruns, beating Babe Ruth’s record. Dorothy Hamill skates her wfay to the top. Nine hundred nine people die in a mass suicide. Followers of a fanatical Californian commit suicide in the jungle of South America. Survivors say Temple members took part in a mass suicide rite by swallowing a concoction of Kool-Aid and cyanide. Mr. Bourdeau 1960 Mr. Bourdeau was the first Vice Principal of the new high school in 1963. A man known for his strict cn-forccment of the dress code, it was not uncommon to find him checking for unbuttoned collars or measuring hemlines. In the early 70’s when the Schaght-icokc Middle School was built. Mr. Bourdeau left the High School as Vice Principal to become Principal there. He Is now a math teacher at Schaghti-cokc. When asked whut difference Mr. Bourdeau would like to have made in the school system over the past 26 years, he replied, “to preserve those values and characteristics of the school which instills pride, dedication and responsibility. ’ 25

Atlanta parents fear for their children’s lives, since this nightmare began on July 28,1979. Eighteen black Atlanta children have been found slain in the past 19 months as a deranged mass murderer unmercifully takes the lives of innocents. mmm Ttlcml , Capsules A drug that helps people now kills people. Tylenol capsules, laced with Strychnine, is the cause of eight deaths. Tylenol have now been replaced by caplets and four layers of protective seals. Several thousand Argentinian troops storm the Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982. The United States sides with Britain in condemning the Argentinians actions. President Reagan offers material support in Britain’s attempt to recapture the South Atlantic islands. The war evolves into a major sea battle. On June 17, Argentina surrenders to the British and 14,000 troops are taken captive. Mr. Magoun 1962 Mr. Magoun begun his career at New Milford High School as an English teacher in 1961. He regrets the decline In the dress code during the 'hippie period’. He recalls students wearing the American flag across their back pockets. During this time period he can remember students protesting government involvement in the Vietnam war by not standing for the XaUonal Anthem. Mr. Magoun recalls vividly the landing on the moon because he brought his summer school class to the library to watch it on TV. 27
