Known to everyone at V.J., he was always there for anyone whojust needed a friend. He knew how to laugh and cry. He understood the meaning of love and joy. Grades meant a lot to V.J. and he worked for them just like the rest of us. His extra-curricular activities included spring football and the chess team. Yet one thing he didn’t work at was his friends. They came naturally to him. He had many and always will. We miss and love him a lot. They moved from East Street School to the “new” New Milford High School. The class consisted of about 90 students and the population of the town of New Milford was about 13,000. In the following pages eight teachers who arc still with us, that made the move 25 years ago, will share their memories of (he past 25 years. New Milford High School in 1963 had — 37 classrooms 1 gym, an auditorium, and only cafe A 3 science labs 1 guidance office 1 small faculty room no courtyard! Since the move to the new high school much has happened, nationally as well as locally. We’ve gone through many presidents as well as principals. The town of New Milford has changed from a rural farm area to a suburban community. Many additions to the High School have been made. An upper gym and more bleachers were put on to accommodate our rocking pep-rallys. Two wings have been added on as well: The math wing and the science wing. The courtyard was formed because of these two wings and is now a favorite place for students to hang out, especially in the warmer months of school. In the following pages we hope to bring you on an exciting Journey through 23 years of history, touching off memories of both heartache and Joy. John F. Kennedy is the president during the early 1960s, with his first lady Jackie. Destined to be the Camelot of modern day. While in office, he faces the Soviet leader Khrushchev in the Bay of Pigs fiasco, and again in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also promises to have a man on the moon by the end of the decade. The nation is mortified as his assassination is seen on television; Lyndon Johnson, the former vice president, is then sworn in as president. The assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, is arrested and murdered on live television. The United States organizes its first involvement in the war in Vietnam. In 1969, 136 Americans are killed in South Hast Asia and the casualties contine to climb. The Xapalrn bombing is carried out, and President Johnson sends 50,000 additional troops to aid in the fight against Communism. Many United States citizens protest the police action involvement in Vietnam. 1963 What was the biggest music scene of the time? The Beatles, of course! The Fab Four invade America with their “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club”, and Paul, John, Ringo and George are instant international superstars. Also popular were Bob Dylan’s “Blowing in the Wind”, The Door’s “Light My Fire” and Jimi Hendrix enjoying the reign as Acid King of the Electric Guitar. The Rolling Stones make their controversial appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show' w'ith “Let’s Spend the Night Together.” James Brown becomes the Godfather of Soul, and Elvis Presley ties the knot w'ith a young Priscilla. Kids are driving a brand new' T-Bird, which replaces the ’57 Chevy as the hottest set of w'hecls, w'hilc Ford introduces a sporty new Mustang. Skate boards become the newest teenage fad when they arc introduced in the early 1960’s. Microwave ovens make their American debut, and send cooking into an entirely new' range. Housewives begin to have more free time, and women are no longer tied to their homes. 20 The year of Civil Rights, 1963 is filled with tones of violence between black and white. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. makes his famous MI have a dream speech to thousands in Atlanta. He speuks of the day when the children of blacks and whites can live together in racial harmony. I)r. For entertainment, everyone is going to see The Birds, Dr. No. A Hard Days Night, and The Sound of Music with Julie Andrew's, while on television, Beverly Hillbillies , Batman and Robin , and a new comedian named Johnny Carson enjoys success. 1968 The early to late Sixties sees the beginning of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Three astronauts are killed w'hile trying to conquer the last frontier and become the first casualties of a new era. Supermodel Tw’iggv of Britain becomes a role model for the teenage girls of America. The miniskirt is complimented by headbands and plastic boots. Harold Morey opens the new' Morey’s IGA Supermarket on East Street in 1968. Morey’s is still in business today at the same location and is visited often by many of the towm’s citizens. : T, One of the year’s most exciting moments was w hen the New Milford firemen cele- brated their centennial, drawing hundred of marchers throughout the state and beyond. A Fireman’s Ball w as held in the New Milford High School gym. Many attended showing their tow n pride and support. Mrs. Z. has (n the past coached checrlcadlng. but presently coaches field hockey and has brought many teams to champi-unship victories. One of the most unforgettable memories of Mrs. Z Is Ihc day that .John Kennedy was assassinated There was u faculty vs. student football game going on at the back field. One student had a portable radio over which they heard the bad news Mrs. Z recalls that many students and all of the faculty stayed after school as the radio was played on the PA system. Mrs. Zaloski 1958 21 On July 20, 1969, man reached John Kennedy’s dream of landing on the moon. Apollo 11, with astronauts Xeil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Pedwin Alrin, made a successful landing In the Sea of Tranquility. Armstrong was the first to make a footprint on the moon’s surface, saying as he did, “One small step for men, one giant leap for mankind. ’ The astronauts spent two hours doing experiments, setting up the American flag, and measuring moon-quakes. Upon returning home, they were kept in isolation for 18 days to determine if there was any contamination from the moon’s atmosphere. There was none, and by 1972 the United States had sent six more Apollo missions to the moon. After graduating from Harvard Medical School w’ith a 3.9 G.P.A. Dr. Emily Rogg devoted all of her time and energy to the research for the cures of AIDS and cancer. These two diseases have persisted to control, disrupt, and destroy the lives of our families and loved ones. Until now' there has been little hope in finding a cure for them. Dr. Rogg accidentally poured the wrong solution into a flask and found the drug that killed the AIDS virus. With a few alterations to this compound came the cure for cancer. Mr. Clonaris, along with other teachers, has witnessed not only the building of a new school, but the addition of a science wing and an upper gvm. Along with these changes has come the growth of the student population. To solve this, Mr. Clonaris would like to sec another high school built in town which is likely to happen in the near future. The king and queen, Paul Marazita and April Cardinal, along with runners-up Werner Stierle, John Esposito, Pat Murphy, John Carmellini, Mary Justs, Bev Beall, Beth Bayers, and Wendy Miles managed to set a festive mood for the 1987 prom, “The Sea of Love”. HOMECOMING - Nov. 14,1987 This year’s Homecoming proved to quite eventful for the class of 1988. The seniors captured first place in the float competition for the first time. The theme was “Memories”, which gave the four classes a chance to show their creativity. The senior class constructed a spirited float of a camera; the Juniors well earned second place with a hope chest; the sophomores took a strong third with their clock and the freshmen showed their great efforts in obtaining the Honorable Mention. Mary Justs and John Carmellini were crowned Homecoming Queen and King during the parade and were reintroduced during the half-time of the football game, which was quite an exciting challenge for the Green Wave team. Student Council’s coordinating of the Homecoming of 1987 was quite a success and will be a memorable event for many. 58 SENIOR PLAY-Dec. 11-12, 1987 HURRICANE SMITH AND THE GARDEN OF THE GOLDEN MONKEY, a tale of action, adventure and romance, was a two-act comedy presented by the senior class with surprising skill. Jason Mullins (Hurricane Smith) captivated the audience. Linda Zest was portrayed by a talented Cathy Bcthercm. The story line is: A student, Gloria Daily (Marcia Geiger) tries to sell her play to a small-time director, Eddie Diamond (David Melchver). A group of drama students perform the “Indiana Jones” — flavored script for him. Hurricane, followed by Zest, goes in search of the Garden, meeting dangerous and humorous characters including Java-Java, Cobra Woman and the Cobra people. In the end, as usual, the good guys win! Although members of the Class of 1988 may disagree upon who their favorite teacher is, we all agree that we owe a great deal to our advisor and close friend, Mr. Sheehan. For the past three years Mr. Sheehan has continued to support the C lass of 1988. His dedication was always present, at our homecomings with the construction of our floats, during our dues and fund drives, at our executive meetings, and at New Milford High School's best .Junior Prom. To many of us Mr. Sheehan is not only an advisor but a close friend. He has remained by our side when ideas have been successes and when ideas have been failures. It tukes a great deal to be a teacher and in charge of over three hundred students. Without Mr. Sheehan a lot could not have been accomplished and the class would be far apart. Thanks to Mr. Sheehan this class is now a very close group. We are very indebted to Mr. Sheehan for his dedication, time, effort, and his friendship. —Ian Rowburry— Mr. Charles Raymond To all those who knew Mr. Charles Raymond, the memory of his teaching will be with us. Mr. Raymond made a lasting impression on all of us which helped to give the ('lass of 1988 a special identity. Mr. Raymond started teaching at New Milford High School in 1970. He had taught here for sixteen years. Mr. Raymond taught a wide variety of courses such as: Western Civilization, American History, Contemporary History, Contemporary Issues and Economics. He went to France and Switzerland in 1986 with the French Club, when most people did not want to travel abroad due to international terrorism. Students on the trip commented that Mr. Raymond’s caring attitude helped people to develop a better understanding of themselves. He touched the Class of ’88, not only in our minds, but in our hearts as well. This is something special and we appreciated it very much. Mr. Raymond left behind many important quotes, which will provide direction in our futures such as: “follow your dreams’’ and “challenge authority, when needed.’’ Many people have been special to us as a class, especially Mr. Raymond who drew our respect and trust through his helpfulness. Through his classroom teaching he developed our intellectual and moral maturity. Mr. Raymond has given us many fond memories and will be remembered as a friend of the ('lass of ’88. 65 —Sheldon Watson— SENIORS SENIORS James Abbott George Adams Christopher Altadonna Tina Altobclli Britt Amundsen Daniel Anderson Joanna Angelic Kimberly Arndt Stephanie Angelovich Regina Aumiller Timothy Arciola 68 Carla Bates Beth Bayers Michael Barhcrio Michele Ball Robert Belcourt Ernest Belmont Tyler Bergcmann Catherine Bcthurem Geraldine Azary Bev Beall Paul Biondino III Eileen Ball SENIORS Stanna Bippus I Kristin Blanchard Kendra Bowman Elias Bouzakis 70 .Jennifer Burke Christopher Calandra Oriane Casale Alissa Cann James Callaghan, Jr. Kim Celello Jcannie Chase Jennifer Chase Joseph Chcmero 71 SENIORS Peter Ciccone Susan Consaga Paige Cook Vicky Cordeiro James Corna 72 Christine Cox Michael Crawford III 1 Charles Curry Robert Curry Cindy Danish Shauna D’Arcy David DeBov Laura DeSalvo Murk Evans Jennifer Fairchild Brenda Farrell SENIORS Kimberlv I)unn Barry Ed man John Esposito, Jr. Amy DiCesare Julie Dixon Robert Doychak Lisa Drazul Brian Ennis Brenda Erickson Beverly Fergason Timothy Frade 75 SENIORS Laura Garten Robert Gavlor Marcia Geiger Andrew Griffin April Gunnarshaug Thomas Halvorsen Christine Goyette 76 Patrick Heaton Edward Hill Susan Hill Sara Hilliard 77 SENIORS Michael Houghtalin Craig Iaia 78 Michael Kelly Barbara Kent David King Robert King 79 Diana Jones Michael Kessler SENIORS Leigh-Ann Kraemer Deborah Kitchens Leann Kriston Jennifer Kraft John Klous David Kullgren Rachel Langrebc Michelle Lapcnna Sharon Lath rope 80 Michael Letourneau Robert Lodsin Joshua Lytle Colleen Maguire 81 Sarah Lester John Lowe John Lukse Brian Maciel Terence Lee Mark Lewis Cheryl Lutinski Christopher Litty SENIORS Juke Mallory Marco Mazzotta Eric Mantion Adam Marcus Jacqueline Martin Erie Marquard Traci Mavette Jacqueline Me Alley Kevin McCaffertv Stephen McC all Colleen McCormack Christopher McCullough 82 William F. Monday morning students gather in the halls and cafeteria to discuss their weekend and complain about their lack of sleep. After all weekend of not seeing their friends, students have plenty to talk about. Every one can also be seen dreading five days of notes, papers, and tests. 96 FRIDAY HURRAHS Fridays, however, students can be observed watching (he clock hands hesitate between 1:59 and 2:00. Students make plans for the weekend including: gumes, parties, and movies. The weekend is also a time for students to catch up on much needed sleep. Next Monday, though, the never ending cycle begins again only to end on a Sunday in June. 97 A DAY IN THE LIFE OF N.M.H.S. For most, a day of school begins about 6:00 AM with (he sound of vour alarm clock, or your mother, ringing in your ears. It’s time to rise and shine and get ready for another day at Xew Milford High School. After a shower and quick decision on what to wear, you cither make a mad dash for your bus or try to start your car. If you can get to school by 7:30, you’ve got 8 minutes to go to your locker, say “hi” to your friends and make it to your first period class. It’s 7:88 and your brain should be ready to start thinking again. First period ends with the eternal phrase “Good morning! and here arc the morning announcements for ...” followed by the morning challenge: the Trivial Pursuit question. Then on to second, third, and fourth period. You’ve survived most of the morning, and now you just have to make it to lunch. With four lunches, it’s hard to remember which lunch you have. Second and third lunches are convenient to break up the period (how many of us haven’t studied for the test we’re having second half of the period?), but fourth lunch always takes too long to arrive. Your stomach always manages to remind you that you’re hungry. One of the great things about lunch is it’s almost the end of the day. For most upperclassmen, it means you’ve got a cafeteria study coming either F or G period, something renowned for its relaxed atmosphere and fun times. Contrary to the dreaded “Quiet Study” of our earlier years, you can talk, sing, play cards, even attempt some homework in the cafe. The courtyard is open for smoking, hackey sacking or just getting some fresh air, and it’s hard not to look forward to a relaxed break in your day. 100 For many, G period means one thing: Band with Mr. Bayers. In the fall and spring, the hand can be heard touring the school grounds practicing their marches for their impressive half-time shows, or in not so wonderful weather, their instruments can be heard in the band room area of the building. Finally, at 2:00, the final bell rings and everyone is free to go home. And if you’re not staying for sports or academics, you either find your bus in the line up or wait in the parking lot until it’s clear enough to drive out. Another day is done, and you’ve got 16 hours of freedom until you have to start all over again. We held a Junior-senior prom in the spring of 87 which was a big success and was enjoyed by everyone that attended. In our senior year we have accomplished a lot while also building a respectable name for ourselves. This year we took first prize for our homecoming float. Our class sponsored and took part in the very successful Halloween party for the young children from the town. We held a successful fundraiser and dues drive to reach our financial quota. After a successful junior year in which the class of 89 narrowly lost to the seniors in the float competition, having two money making fundraisers and an elegant night at Prom 88. The athletic program excelled with a nucleus of junior athletes on the varsity squad. Next year, as seniors, we look to continue that success. The class of 89 is a combination of different personalities that work very well together. Our continued excellence will convincingly show that we are truly “above the JUNIORS Ted Bouzakis president Mark Cell! We are trying to pull together and increase our class spirit to become more successful as the year goes on. As freshmen we participated in the magazine campaign as our first fundraiser; it was some-what successful. This year we have many new ideas for our fundraiser as well as having a dues drive to help our treasury. We are sure that this year will be a financial success. There are many things we are looking forward to in future months and years. This year we will receive our class rings toward the end of May. We will also start planning for our Junior prom which will take place in May, 1989. Mrs. DeLucla advisor 124 S. Achen K. Altadonna C. Altobclli G. Altschuler B. Anderson J. Andrew L. Andronaco R. Due to complications, our float didn’t turn out the way we hoped it would. But we aren’t discouraged, we plan on doing much better next year. Decorating the halls will be fun. During the next four years, we the class of 1 are hoping to be productive and successful. We want to leave being remembered Just like any other class. We’ve learned a lot as a freshman class. We started off slowly, but once we get going, the class of 1 will be very successful. Thanks to the effort put forth by the Student Council, New Milford finally had its long awaited Pep Rally. Included in the events were: a pie eating contest, won by the Freshmen; a spirit stick competition, won by the Juniors; and also the presentation of the winter athletes. It was a well appreciated break in the daily routine schedule and there was a fine ar- ay of school spirit shown by all four classes. Special thanks to Karen Burrow's for her extra efforts. 180 ACTIVITIES TIMEPIECES CLUE The Future Farmers of America club dealt with studying the agricultural processes of the time. The students used this club as the foundation for their future studies that would bring them into the real world of farming as a profession. Farming was a popular profession to pursue in the past and therefore many students of this time were interested in learning and using agricultural skills. In the past at New Milford High School, clubs such us the Timepieces club existed. This club consisted of students who were interested in the construction of clocks and watches. They would learn how to put together, tuke apart, and construct their own clocks. This club is a reflection of the interests of the past.
