Time it was, And what a time it was, It was . . . A time of innocence, A time of confidences. Long ago ... it must be I have a photograph. Preserve your memories; They’re all that's left you Paul Simon the first of all my dreams was of a lover and his only love, strolling slowly (mind in mind) through some mysterious land until my second dream begins — the sky is wild with leaves; which dance and dancing swoop (and swooping whirl over a frightened boy and girl) but that mere fury soon became silence: in hunger always whom two tiny selves sleep (doll by doll) motionless under magical foreverfully falling snow. And then this dreamer wept: and so she quickly dreamed a dream of spring — how you and i are blossoming — E. E. Cummings Table of Contents Dedication Principal's Message Seniors Faculty Underclassmen Activities Sports Senior Directory 6 Because of the great diversity of students in this school, there are very few teachers that touch the lives of nearly all. Mrs. Leonard, however, is one who does. She is admired for her tireless efforts, her infinite optimism, and her concern for people in school or out. She is not an outspoken crusader, but with her own quiet progress she provides for students’ needs. Always willing to help the individual, she is in turn, respected. It is for this personalized teaching, and the compassion and honesty that she shows towards all, that Mrs. Leonard is loved. And so, it is with great affection, that the Senior class dedicates the 1974 yearbook to this lovely lady. 7 NEW MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL 25 SUNNY VALLEY ROAD NEW MILFORD. CONNECTICUT 06776 PHONE: 354-3936 JOHN M. BENN VICEPRINCIPAL NATHAN CHESLER PRINCIPAL WILLIAM B. ATKINSON VICE-PRINCIPAL June 1974 To The Graduating Class of June 1974: When one looks at the class of June 1974 he sees students who are purposeful, responsible, dedicated, concerned and wholesome. True these adjectives may be generalizations but they aptly describe your class. The students of this senior class are purposeful in the way they go about their studies. They have shown responsibility in the type of individuals they have chosen to lead them, dedication to carrying out goals that they have established through democratic processes, concern with the welfare of their fellow students and wholesome in that they stand for something by the values they exhibit. These virtues are the kind that give us hope for the future. It is you who will be the leaders of tomorrow. The responsibilities, burdens and joys of leadership will be yours. It has been my pleasure to be associated with you. I would like to say to you in Latin: Ave Atque Vale - Hail and farewell! As I am writing this letter, nearly two months school experience has passed. These two months have been filled with many new impressions. To meet each one of you was in some aspects good for me, and I hope was a little fun for you too. And it is fine that this is not over tomorrow. Although Germany is more similar to America than Japan may be, there are new things, discussions and meetings for me to think about nearly every day. I have opportunities to have a better understanding of English and American literature, to work in a language lab, to work with a computer, to know more about your history, to play in the band and much more. Of course it is really great to be integrated into a community abroad. You helped by accepting me. When I applied for this scholarship my purpose was to become a person a little more complete, to be able to see things more clearly and to learn about culture and language in America. But it turns out to be more than that. I have the opportunity to share my opinions, feelings and cultural background in discussions with you. In a letter from a former AFS student, Jaime Olazo asked me to use this opportunity and do a good job, I hope I have done so. Being involved with AFS means also feeling that the people working for this program are building up a world community. In my opinion the students and teachers of New Milford High School are doing a good deal to make this possible and pleasant. For that I want to thank you very much. Sincerely yours, 74 Dear Students and Teachers, It's different an American school than a Guatemalan school because of the way of teaching. But, of course, the object is the same: to give better ways of life to the young people, and so, good future. It’s truly interesting to get to know another kind of school and way of life: that's the great thing an AFS student gets from AFS organization and from all of you who support AFS. To be born in America means to be lucky because you have the chance of a good education from primary school to college or even get a scholarship to a university. In Guatemala a student doesn’t have too many chances; for instance, very few people go to a university — 1%. I guess there is the problem that most of the people don’t know how to write and read. They don’t understand why they have to go to school when they are needed in the fields — coffee, corn and cotton, mostly. I want to say: New Milford is a small but nice town, peaceful and colorful in the Fall season; it’s something good to remember! Thank you: 75 % 77 J sixjuauyc Guidance Cy y u'-c -— nn axdt cruu. They adopted an activity curriculum consisting of running, climbing, swimming, and flying. To make it easier to administer the curriculum, all the animals took ALL the subjects. The duck was excellent in swimming, in fact, better than his instructors, but he made only passing grades in flying and was very poor in running. Since he was slow in running, he had to stay after school and also drop swimming, in order to practice running. This was kept up until his webbed feet were badly worn and he was only average in swimming. But an average was acceptable in school, so nobody worried about that except the duck. The rabbit started at the top of the class in running, but had a nervous break-down because of so much make-up work in swimming. The squirrel was excellent in climbing until he developed frustration in flying class where his teacher made him start from the group up instead of the treetop down. He also developed charley-horses from over-exertion and then got a C in climbing and a D in running. The eagle was a problem child and was disciplined severely. In the climbing class he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but insisted on using his own way to get there. At the end of the year, an abnormal eel that could swim exceedingly well and also run, climb, and fly a little, had the highest average and was valedictorian. The prairie dogs stayed out of school and fought the tax levy because the administration would not add digging and burrowing to the curriculum. They apprenticed their children to a badger and later joined the groundhogs and gophers to start a successful private school. ACTIVITIES 'oCr e- ol A JiUoon,. This is misleading, however, because four games were dropped by a touchdown or less. BARLOW . . . Falcons were tough. The Wave lost the game with a first period fumble on their six yard line, which led to the only score of the game. The Wave dominated the next game against BETHEL. It looked like their first victory but lightening struck and Bethel scored on the last play of the game. IMMACULATE . . . The Wave put it all together for their first victory . . . outstanding defense was the key to victory. SACRED HEART . . . first meeting ever between the two schools. Defense recorded the first shutout in quite some time. BROOKFIELD . . . spoiled a fine offensive showing and turned back the Wave’s attempt to win three in a row. CENTRAL CATHOLIC . . . The Wave was sluggish but picked up momentum with Riley’s steal, which he ran back for a touchdown. The team went on to beat Central. NEWTOWN . . . Homecoming for New Milford . . . the Wave faltered to a fine team which later won the WCC crown. MASUK . . . New Milford had a good chance to even up its record but Masuk scored during on the third play of the game and the Green Wave fell behind, unable to catch up.
