He’s touched most of our lives through some facet of himself. Whether on a soccer field, at Chanticleer paste-ups, in the courtyard, at cross-country meets, or in the classroom, Mr. Rogers always gave of himself and demanded a certain amount of giving from his students — and he got it. While approaching literature, journalism, ecology or sports, his energetic manner and cogent speech highlighted his enthusiasm and obvious zest for life and intellect. All who came in contact with Mr. Rogers — “worms’ and “maggots” alike — experienced his radiating cognizance of life and came away a bit better for it. And now: The time has come for closing books. And long last looks must end. But, as I leave, I know that I am leaving my best friend. A friend who taught me right from wrong, And weak from strong — That’s a lot to learn. What can I give you in return? How can you thank someone who has made such an indelible impression upon you? There is only one easy way out from this bearded bard whose vocabulary, manner, and love for his students has emanated and grown with you for four years. It seems like a small thank you” for all of a man’s time and energy, but we the Senior Class of 1973 would like to extend our deepest appreciation, respect, and admiration to Mr. Lance Rogers. 5 June 1973 To The Graduating Class of June 1973: This, your senior year in high school, has been referred to as the Age of the Majority.” The Youth of America, those under twenty-five years of age, make up the greatest number of United States Citizens. Among the privileges extended to you this past year are the right to vote, to sign contracts, and to purchase alcoholic beverages. These privileges will be accompanied by varied responsibilities. The responsibility to vote should not be taken for granted. Edmund Burk said over 200 years ago — “All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win the world is for enough good men to do nothing.” One should exercise this right which is denied men in many parts of the world. Another responsibility is that of contract. These agreements require the legal advice of experts when they involve large sums of money. The old saying that he who uses himself for an attorney has a fool for a client,” serves to remind us of the caution which should be exercised before engaging in a major contract. One should be cognizant of the dangers in excessive use of alcohol. Shakespeare alludes to this in Othello. The quote is as follows: “O God; that man should put an enemy in their mouths to steal away their brains; that we should with joy, pleasance, revel, and applause, transform ourselves into beasts.” Shakespeare, Othello. II, 3 A vote of confidence has been extended to you. Through the American system of government, the rights of the individual have been expanded. The responsibility to exercise these rights in a mature manner are incumbent upon the recipient, you. May all that you strive for be realized. I have enjoyed my association with you, the class of June, 1973. This unimpeded speed, there has been an irrevocable decision that every word I utter and every gesture I make is done with utmost order, smoothness and care . . . that “every page of a book is read with gentleness, ability to absorb and assimilate its thought and with a resolution of concentration and determination.” Which are all the guiding forces towards the broad tasks and responsibilities. I have sought the truth at my heart and soul. I can now encounter the realm of the complexities of life with an iron heart with head way up, whether they are intriguing or confusing. I have become more appreciative of not only myself, but also to the beauty of the things around me. I have become more aware and cautious of not only the unexpected and surprising problems that may suddenly pop up. but also to the evergrowing amount of chaos and intrigue that besets or torments a formidable society. A sense of emotional stability and a feeling of independence have grown with me. The “rust and stains” which wed to undermine my mental and physical ability and capability with respect to my notions and strength have been chipped off and I have risen from my couch and have been moving forward and have never ceased pursuing for the attainment and gratification of an ultimate goal... It is in this regard that I am reiterating my acknowledgement and many thanks for the things which you have afforded me during my studies at New Milford High School. I foresee that in the days to come, I would be reaping innumerable honors which would be primarily due to the memorabilia of words you spoke and the actions you made which benefited me a lot. . . Summing up everything I have written, I say, “thank you very merely” or “maraming salomat po” in my language; until the “sky comes up with a bright and sunny day, after this dark and deteriorating Your friend. realization of a dream to one point and the fulfillment of an end to another . . . Time, time, time, see what’s become of me While 1 looked around for my possibilities. I was so hard to please. Look around, leaves are brown, And the sky is a hazy shade of winter. Hear the Salvation Army Band. Down by the riverside’s bound to be a better ride Than what you’ve got planned. Carry your cup in your hand. And look around, leaves are brown, And the sky is a hazy shade of winter. Hang on to your hopes, my friend. That’s an easy thing to say, but if your hopes should pass away Simply pretend that you can build them again. Look around, the grass is high, the fields are ripe, It’s the springtime of my life. Seasons change with the scenery; weaving time in a tapestry. Won’t you stop and remember me at any convenient time? Funny how my memory skips while looking over manuscripts Of unpublished rhyme. Drinking my vodka and lime, look around, leaves are brown now, And the sky is a hazy shade of winter. Look around, leaves are brown, There’s a patch of snow on the ground. —Paul Simon I do not wish to treat friendship daintily, hut with roughest courage. When they are real, they are not glass threads or frostwork, but the solidest things we know. For now, after so many ages of experience, what do we know of nature or of ourselves? Not one step has man taken toward the solution of the problem of his destiny. In one condemnation of folly stand the whole universe of men. But the sweet sincerity of joy and peace which I draw from this alliance with my brother’s soul is the nut itself whereof all nature and all thought is but the husk and shell. —Ralph Waldo Emerson A nd the saddest things under the sun above. Is to say goodbye to the ones you love. All the things that I have known Became my life; my very own. But before you know, you say goodbye. For all time, goodbye. It's time to cry. But I will not weep or make a scene. Just say “Thank you, Life, for having been.” And the loudest cry under the sun above, Is the silent goodbye from the ones you love. —Melanie Safka The tiniest grain of sand upon the shore, the humblest flower in the field and the single dewdrop are just as wonderful as the highest cliff, the mightiest tree or the fiercest storm. Back of them all is the irresistible urge of the Universal Impulse. Yesterday there was a storm. The clouds gathered, the wind raged and hurled everything before it, but I could not think of the storm apart from myself. It spoke to me only of the immensity and vast ness of the whole of which I am a part. . . —Van Dearing Perrine Yesterday, a child came out to wonder, Caught a dragonfly inside a jar, Fearful when the sky was full of thunder, And tearful at the failin’ of a star. Then the child moved ten times ’round the seasons, Skated over ten clear frozen streams. Words like when you’re older must appease him, And promises of Someday make his dreams. Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now. Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town. And they tell him, Take your time, it won’t he long now Til you drag your feet to slow those circles down.” So the years go by and now the hoy is twenty. 'Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true. There’ll he new dreams, maybe better dreams, and plenty Before the last revolving year is through. And the seasons, they go ’round an ’round, And the painted ponies go up and down. We’re captive on the carousel of time. We can’t return, we can only look behind from where we came, A nd go ’round and 'round and ’round in the Circle Game. —Joni Mitchell Old friends, Old friends Sat on their park bench like bookends. A newspaper blown through the grass Falls on the round toes of the high shoes of the old friends. Old friends. Winter companions, the old men Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sunset. The sounds of the city, sifting through trees, Settle like dust on the shoulders of the old friends. Can you imagine us years from today, Sharing a park bench quietly? How terribly strange to be seventy. Old friends, Memory brushes the same years. Silently sharing the same fear . . . Time it was, and what a time it was. It was . . . A time of innocence. A time of confidences. Long ago .. . it must be .. . I have a photograph. Preserve your memories; They’re all that’s left you. —Paul Simon C7fU CL o 1973 JVtar JHdfoid iSJiool kiiittilt Omaglnx'' at C anCuiy «?'!(otox Onn «s1(oy 13, 1972 S:00 «N, to 12 dAiiAniy t Members of the Court include Lee Lord, Joy Bell, Curt Humiston—King, Patty Farrell—Queen, Nina Didkovsky—Princess, Tom Cook—Pnnce, Tami Schultz, and Kevin Lynch. A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. And the former was a lulu and the latter was a cake . . . But Morasco preceeded Center as did also Lesiak . . . And Grossenbacher the much despised tore the cover off the ball; The rest clung to the hope . . . they thought if only Center could but get a whack at that But Castro let drive a single to the wonderment of all . .. 211 Then while the writhing pitcher ground the ball into her hip, There was ease in Center's manner as she stepped into her place; there was pride in Center's bearing and a smile on Center's face. Defiance gleamed in Center's eye, a sneer curled Center's lip. 'That ain't my style'' said Center. Strike one. the umpire said. W ith a smile of Christian charity great Center's visage shone; she stilled the rising tumult: she bade the game go on: she signaled to the pitcher, and once more the spheroid flew. « But on the field pushing Center aside is Bona eight innings late. The sneer is gone from Bona’s lip, her teeth are clenched in hate; and now the pitcher holds the ball, and now she let's it go. and now the air is shattered by the force of Bona's blow'. But, there is no joy in New Milford—Bona has struck out. But Center still ignored it. and the umpire said strike two. 212 BASEBALL Row 1: G. Morin, G. Fredlund, D. Delohery, B. Arbusto, A.
