“NEW MILFORD HIGH SCHOOL 25 SUNNY VALLEY ROAD NEW MILFORD, CONNECTICUT 06776 PHONE: 354-3936 JOHN M. BENN VICE-PRINCIPAL NATHAN CHESLER PRINCIPAL PAUL J. NEWMAN GUIDANCE DIRECTOR June 1972 To The Graduating Class of June 1972: 1 hen you graduate, you will enter a society which is experiencing the greatest proliferation of knowledge in history. This society is more challenging and complex than the one which faced previous graduates. Wore knowledge of more things will be expected of you. Today's graduates are better prepared than were those of earlier years. Face the future with a positive philosophical outlook. See the glass as half full, rather than half empty. Think positively! As the Sociologist Robert K. Merton said in the self-fulfilling prophecy , if you anticipate failure, the greater are the chances of your failing. Spend quiet, thoughtful time in libraries. There the ideas of the world's great thinkers are enshrined. The educated man looks at learning as an on-going process. The ability to think critically is important to every individual and is the end product. This enables one to define problems also, one should keep abreast of current trends in whatever career he follows. Then the result will be characterized by creative thinking. Alfred Forth Vhitehead wrote, There is one moral to be drawn. Apart from detail, and apart from system, a philosophical outlook is the very foundation of thought and of life. The sort of ideas we attend to, and the sort of ideas which we push into the negligible background, govern our hopes, our fears, our control of behavior. As we think, we live . All education is worthless however,, without a humanistic attitude. Respect for one's fellow man is the secret of success. When one has achieved this respect, then he will be able to go ahead. May your dreams and aspirations be fulfilled. It has been my pleasure to be associated with you - the class of June, 1972. Sincerely yours Nathan Chester Principal
