During your last year in high school, man has successfully landed on the moon twice, this being a goal set by the late president, John F. Kennedy, during the early 60’s. Many consider this feat the greatest in the history of mankind. This was made possible by the dedication and determination of an educated society and man’s innate curiosity of his world. Upon graduation from New Milford High School, you will be facing the challenge of the 70’s. Your increased knowledge and maturity over the past four years have equipped you to better meet these challenges. During the next decade, many of you will be making decisions concerning your life’s work. I trust your choice of endeavor will prove to be fruitful and afford each of you happiness. While meeting these challenges in the near future you will occasionally find time to reminisce about your high school days. This fine publication will help bring back what we hope will be fond memories. Russell L. Devin Principal John Benn, Vice-principal. and guidance Paul J. Newman, Guidance Director. George W. It was a hard season which began with the heat of late September and ranged into the bitter cold of October. The J.V.’s did well and fought hard when another J.V. team was available. Under the direction of Coach Zaloski both teams were inspired to do their best for N.M. 110 HA U NT A 0 U. s A T 0 (V I c Row 1: E. Douglas, S. Leitch, co-captain; S. Tyszkiewicz, co-captain. Despite a somewhat disappointing gridiron season which registered only two wins in seven starts, the season was in many respects a great success. The sportsmanship and competitive qualities characteristic of the New Milford athlete can be equalled nowhere. Led by All-Conference selections Mike Strelez, Dean Golembeski, and Rich Onorato, the team experienced a number of exciting moments. A fantastic comeback in which we scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes gave us a thrilling 12-8 victory over Weston. King’s Prep of Stamford was the other victory of the season. Having been trounced the year before by a humiliating 52-0 tally, the Big Green looked upon their being an 18 point underdog with mixed emotions. There were many things riding on this game, however, and to say that we “wanted” a victory was putting it mildly. The outcome was an impressive 26-8 victory for the Green Wave. Following the game, the only difference between the N.M.H.S. locker room and that of the World Champion New York Mets was the absence of champagne. Although the team is losing a number of seniors, there are many experienced and talented underclassmen who promise a successful season next fall. So when next fall rolls around and you’re once again welcomed to “Big Green Stadium” don’t be surprised to see one of the finest N.M.H.S. football teams in its short eleven man history. 112 Dennis Buss Co-capt. Excellent leadership and performance was provided throughout the year by Bill Osuch, captain, who was undefeated in dual competition. The team worked conscientiously throughout the year, performing willingly the many repetitious drills. Providing outstanding leadership which contributed to a successful and commendable season were Chris Webster, Mike Frisbie, Pat Ploch, Don McKen-ney, Charles Torpey, and Roy Turner. For relief from the routine weekly workouts, on Saturdays the team would run on old dirt roads which were blocked off from public use. Once, the team ran to Washington, Connecticut, where they ended the practice with a touch football game. The team was a spirited, homogeneous unit that enjoyed a very successful season. Bill Osuch’s excellent competitive record and well earned second place in the State Sectionals made him the easy choice for MVP, while Charles Torpey’s dedication, spirit, and steady improvement earned him the team’s MIP honor. 117 gtr r s basketball Row 1: J. Under Coach Chris Whitcomb’s tutelage the 1969-1970 team was a keenly competitive group exemplifying great desire, hustle, and team spirit. Playing with only one man over six feet tall, time and again they out-hustled, out-played, and outfought much taller teams to bring home a cherished victory. To date the high point of the season was a hard-earned victory over Henry Abbott Tech—the first since both teams joined the Western Connecticut Conference. At this writing they have compiled a fine 9-5 record, one of the best at this juncture of the season that New Milford has had in a long, long time. Also the team is very much in the running for the championship of the Northern Division of the Western Connecticut Conference, and for a berth in the State Tournament. At the end of this season Coach Whitcomb will lose six seniors who have contributed greatly to the team’s success in the areas of ability, hustle, desire and team spirit. They are Howard Thompson, Richard Onorato, Dean Golembeski, Ralph Murphy, Tucker Burke, and Mike Hulton. However, the Coach has four underclassmen returning—Joe McKay, George Popilowski, Chris Webster, and Bill Church—-who have had much valuable playing time and who, along with several fine players from Coach Robert Latham’s J.V. team should give Coach Whitcomb and New Milford High another fine season. 121 seniors Richard Onorato Dean Golembeski Ralph Murphy Howard Thompson Thomas Burke, captain TOURNAMENT BOUND! Each one of these girls has promoted the school spirit considerably. They practice long hours under the direction of their advisors, Miss Tanner and Miss Reeve, to be ready for the respective seasons. During all games the girls, led by their vivacious captain, Patti Dangler, spread their enthusiasm among the fans as they cheered our teams on to victory. 124 125 activities acijAjiiG? This year opened my eyes to see some of the things I never noticed before, like how similar the teenagers are to each other all over the world and how friendly people here are. 1 really felt that this school was MY SCHOOL, and that I was a part of it. I made many everlasting friendships in this building and it will always stay in my mind. I want to thank Mr. Devin and all my teachers for this year. A special thanks to Mr. McDevitt for the funny times I had with the Senior Play. I also thank my family, the Robersons; they really made me feel at home here. Good Luck to all of you next year and always; maybe someday 1 can visit you again.
