“
Life is a search to find ourselves as we seek to establish our identity. So was I once myself a swinger of birches. And so I dream of going back to be. 3 With the first gulp of oxygen and the first glimmer of awareness, we took faltering steps toward an unknown destination. Our world grew larger through learning and association with others. For the first time independence is within our grasp—we face new responsibility. 8 Study sparks our in terest and we strive to learn further. 10 The thread stream had her course before her, and so I followed, hoping to find myself beneath a stone. 11 Activities reveal our likes and dislikes; competition molds our character. 12 Oh for a man who is a man, and as my neighbor says, has a bone in his back which you cannot pass your hand through. 13 We learn to look beyond ourselves and wish to find a window to the world. Beyond it lies confusion and many paths, yet we each can take only one. Atvt u 15 We leave to face the future. There our identity will be found. FACULTY and ADMINISTRATION—page 20 SENIORS—page 32 UNDERCLASSMEN—page 88 SPORTS—page 100 PRODUCTIONS—page 132 ACTIVITIES—page 116 8 We, the Class of 1969, proudly dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Newman. Of our many advisors—a new one each year— he stands out in our minds. During our last two years at NMHS he has excelled both as guidance counselor and class advisor. Under his aid our class treasury prospered, our Junior Prom was a success, and in general he brought us away from the apathy of Freshmen and Sophomores. He made our years as Juniors and Seniors the most memorable years in High School. We appreciate the cheerfulness and firmness with which he guided us and are indebted to him for the time and effort that he devoted to us. 19 Daniel E. Center, Jr. Principal You have been a high school student during a period of time when acute international and social ills have produced uncertainty, distrust, and in some instances temporary anarchy. You as students have witnessed and studied about the war in Vietnam, race relations, and the problems of the urban ghetto. Many of us who graduated a quarter of a century ago have tended to excuse our high school performance and subsequent record because we were in high school when our nation was involved in a truly great war. You could, but I hope you do not search for a similar excuse. Your high school experience should have helped you to determine life-long personal and occupational goals, an appreciation of your cultural heritage, a willingness to make changes in our political, social, and economic patterns in a democratic, refined manner, and a concern for your fellow man. May the future contain your rightful share of happiness and success! Unfortunately the one loss was against Wilton, a rough game with a close score, 3-2, which placed the New Milford second in the conference. The total number of goals scored by New Milford during the season was thirty, with the opposing teams scoring only six against New Milford. A young, inexperienced team with only four senior starters, at times showed great promise but was seldom able to sustain itself through an entire game. The high points of the season were a come-from-behind victory over Bethel, and a gallant first half performance against Ridgefield. We held the Ridgefield Tigers, unbeaten in two years, scoreless for the first half! After these two early season games the team became riddled with injuries. Neither John Phelan, the starting quarterback, nor co-captain Gary Rogers, a very capable end. were able to finish the season. With the loss of these two key members and several others, the team was forced to rebuild. With the experience gained this year we look forward to a successful season next year. 105 106 First Row: R. Backed by fine distance runners Ron Gero, co-captain, and Bill Osuch, plus a field of others, the Harriers took first place in the Sectionals at Danbury and fourth place at the meet for Class M schools. Three boys qualified for the Open State Meet in which the best runners from all class schools compete. Here New Milford ranked ninth. Wilton, and Danbury. 109 This year’s Green Wave showed great potential—it had speed, shooting ability, defense, depth— and although a lack of height persisted there were several “leapers” on the squad. When the yearbook went to press, the Wave was struggling to reach the state tournament for the second consecutive year, needing to defeat two of the following teams: Abbott Tech, Bethel, and Washington. It could be said that the success of the season depended on the outcome of these three games, for this year’s biggest goal was to attain a tourney ranking. no At Washington 65-56 H.V.R.H.S. 61-47 At Masuk 76-66 Abbott Tech 39-66 Ridgefield 58-60 At Bethel 71-41 Barlow 46-42 Masuk 47-35 At H.V.R.H.S. 58-63 At Ridgefield 61-62 At Newtown 77-60 At Barlow 56-59 Alumni 68-43 Newtown 76-61 At Wilton 39-81 Wilton 64-83 in First Row: J. With the help of Mr. Bucknam and Mr. Magoun, the faculty advisors, the staff has attempted to convey in the yearbook its feeling of necessity and insight in its search for identity. Through the use of photographs, art work, and literature, the staff has tried to probe the paths of life in which we will walk. Mr. Bucknam and Mr. Magoun, advisors. First Row; N. Warner. C. Rude. P. This was one of the many comments that circulated during this year’s initiation. The girls wore sweatshirts inside out, long skirts, and hair pulled up in pony tails. The boys also wore skirts (though some sported minis), plus pajama tops and purses. After two days of subjecting themselves to the whims of the seniors, the freshmen were finally welcomed into New Milford High at an initiation dance Friday evening. Under the direction of Jim Radzewicz, a “kangaroo court” provided “punishments” and games for the frosh who dared to violate the stringent senior rules. 134 The Sophomore Talent Show, It’s About Time, was a hilarious combination of talent and humor, as well as a versatile performance that poked fun at history’s accomplishments. Emceeing the event was Brian Parker who kept the audience roaring in between acts. Through the efforts of co-chairman Jim Radzewicz and Sandy Pollard, and class advisors, Miss Rennie and Mr. Klein, the event was a success. 135 136 On the evening of May 31, 1968, Danbury’s Amber Room pulsated with the beat of the Harry Wells’ Band as the Class of ’69 presented the Junior Prom entitled “Camelot”. The roast beef dinner party was the sight of the crowning of the Royal Couple, Rita McMahon and foreign exchange students Lars Sjolander, and the naming of their court which included Kathe Stone as princess, John Stack as prince, Chris Hulton, Gary Rogers, Terri Caruso, and Mike Farrell. The success of the event can be attributed primarily to co-chairmen Polly Wallian and Bob Hunt and advisors Miss Rennie and Mr Newman. 137 CAST THE GUESTS: HANNIBAL.................Brian Parker FAIRY MAY................Dianne Glidden JEFFERY..................John Phelan MRS. PADDY...............Holly Martin FLORENCE.................Mary Foster 138 This year's senior play, The Curious Savage, was hailed as one of the best plays in NMHS history. It was about a very wealthy woman, Mrs. Ethel P. Savage, whose avaricious stepchildren had her committed to a rest home, the Cloisters, when she decided to convert the Savage fortune into a memorial fund to her late husband. While at the Cloisters she met five very charming if eccentric people whom she grew to love. Thus the plot evolves as a conflict between the “bad” step children and the “good people of the rest home. Mr. McDevitt, in his first try at directing a senior play, did an excellent job. The actors had the confidence and poise that it took to turn an old play into a new success. 139 All Classes worked to make the magazine campaign pay for new band uniforms. Polly Wallian won this year’s D.A.R. Award. The man from NASA explained topics of the space age. 146 The Industrial Arts Club and Boys’ Varsity Club built and sponsored a refreshment stand for the football games. The football season began with the Booster Club’s bonfire. Miss Goldberg. Mr. Scopino, Miss Harrison, and Mr. Sanzeni (absent) were this year’s student teachers. Chris Hulton was crowned Homecoming Queen. Fifty percent of the collection of the Green Feather Drive was sent to the Biafran Relief Fund. 147 Patricia Warner and Charen Rude, local semifinalists in the Americans Abroad program, stand with Celia Florian (center), this year’s AFS student. Joan Frisbie, Michelle Peyron, Wendy Dealy, and Charen Rude received letters of commendation, while Patricia Warner (center) became a National Merit semifinalist. r Construction workers attack t h e school from all sides. 48 All eyes are on the ball during boys’ intramural basketball. New members are inducted into the National Honor Society at a fall assembly: Polly Wallian, Jacqueline Cignoli, Robert Hunt, and Patti Pascale. Mr. Rogers started the first Chess Club in recent NMHS history. Shirley Svvett won this year s Betty Crocker Homemaker Award. The Pep Club was begun to boost school spirit. Winter sports lovers joined the new' Ski Club, founded by Mr. Hoyt. Mr. Center was promoted to Superintendent of Schools and Mr. Devin became interim principal. 149 DIRECTORY AHERN. THOMAS O. The fight for a berth came down to the season’s final game, which was the trouncing of Washington, a good team which also had tourney aspirations. The drawing of the first round opponent was eagerly awaited and hopes rose when it was learned that it would be Southbury. However, the Green Wave was not able to gain a victory, and advancement in the tourney came to an end. 163 First Row: R. Terrell, D. Buss, G. Mitchell, P. Benson, J. Phelan, C. Smith, P. The golf team, led by juniors Mike Hulton and Dick Hess, managed a fourth place finish in the YV.C.C. with a 6-6 record. With the experience gained this year, next spring looks bright. This year’s track team, basically a very young one in the rebuilding process, lost only two meets (both in the final event), the first defeats in track for New Milford since 1966. The team was led by seniors Ron Gero, Curtis Smith, and Gary Rogers, and, of course, Pete Squires, ending a career which established him as one of the greatest runners the YV.C.C. has ever seen. 165 First Row: P. Grossenbacher, J. Wyant, P. Pokrywka, beski, W. Gibbon, J. McKay, B. Slowick, H. Thompson, B. Eayers, D. Ness. Second Row: M. Strelez, D. Golem- Mr. Hayes, coach. 166 First Row: C. Farrell, K. Although the softball team had only one victory, next year seems full of promise. The team gained much experience this year and has only lost one player, senior Polly Wallian. The baseball team was another squad undergoing a radical rebuilding program, for Pete Pokrywka was the only returning senior. However, the year saw the rise of Mike Strelez who set a league record for homeruns. With him returning next year, as well as such underclassmen as Bill Eayrs and Joe McKay, victories seem certain. 167 First Row: L. Golden, B. Donnelly, L. Jones, S. Curtis, Moore, B. Minnerly, L. Rain was frequent which often made the courts at the New Milford Racquet Club unavailable. The girls’ team was only able to play four matches, ending with a 2-2 record. The boys team completed the year with an 8-2 record, good for a second place finish in the W.C.C. Dave Robison concluded his brilliant high school career with a 28-2 record. Both teams are looking forward to next spring when the courts at the high school are scheduled to be finished. 169 HIGHLIGHTS The ticket was split as Students With A Purpose Lou Golden and Scott Leitch were elected vice-president and president, while Students for Total Participation Patti Dangler and David Hauser became treasurer and secretary. The seniors held both a car wash and a bake sale to raise money for graduation expenses. Ability as well as enthusiasm was shown by the newly formed girls’ track team which placed in six out of seven events in the regional meet. 170 The volleyball team displayed great skill by emerging from the regional tournament as the only undefeated team, and then went on to tie for third in the state. The band and chorus presented a spring concert with a variety of music to please everyone. Bowling again proved to be a popular sport held weekly at the Holiday Bowl in Danbury. The AFS Club sponsored an international weekend with guests from five different countries. 171 O 1 CD 'nJ NJ 1 CO to CD The National Honor Society tapped initiated new members. 173 Scarborough Fair, this year's Junior Prom, was held on Saturday, May 31. A fountain bubbled in the center of the Amber Room and music was provided by Ken Lee’s band. Once again our AFS student became royalty as Celia Florian and John Stack were crowned queen and king. Co-chairmen Mike Hulton and Sherry Osuch were prince and princess. 175 176 JUNE 5 177 178 SCHOLARSHIPS Neiv Milford Education Association Scholarships: Marion Day, Susan Ducey, Susan Frisbie, Jacqueline Cignoli New Milford High School Student Council Scholarships: Jerry Hall of the Class of 1968, Mary Michelson, Sue Frisbie, Joan Frisbie, Ronald Gero, Gary Rogers.
