“
We, the class of 1959, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Harold Hunt, a man who has kept in contact with us throughout our school career. We will never forget his help and understanding in and out of his music classes. Although we have lost contact with him to some extent, we will never forget his warm humor, gentle kindness, and endless devotion. He has instilled within us an appreciation of music and of the finer qualities in human beings. When we began our senior year in 1958 at New Milford High, and undertook our duties on the yearbook staff, we had no idea of what was really in store for us. We were in a state of complete ignorance of yearbook editing and there would have been confusion but for the patience and calm guidance of our two advisors, Mr. William Bucknam and Miss Jane Dineen. We wanted a yearbook that had more originality and was certainly better than the general run of yearbooks but we decided to stay with tradition in our title, SCHAGHTICOKE. You see before you the product of a year's hard work and determination and we hope that now your humble patience pray, kindly to look and gently to judge. SCHAGHTICOKE STAFF Marion Crowley, Editor 0 5 You, the Class of 1959, should be proud of the accomplishments you have made during your four years at New Milford High School. This book testifies to your accomplishments. It is hoped that these past four years have prepared you to enter society as a useful citizen. We, here at New Milford High School, will be applauding your accomplishments. New Milford High School is proud of each member of the Class of 1959. May I extend to every member of the Class of 1959, sincere congratulations on having reached this most important milestone on life's journey and best wishes for success in whatever you undertake. Occt s4cCvi4M Miss Keeler and Mr. Trask Mr. and Mrs. Bucknam The class of '59 owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the advisors of both our class affairs and our yearbook. Miss Keeler and Mr. Trask, who have been class advisors throughout our junior and senior years, have devoted a great deal of time and effort toward making our high school careers happy and successful. They chaperoned our social affairs and helped us with the endless problems which confronted us, particularly Class Night. Mr. and Mrs. Bucknam were our yearbook advisors. By their good judgment, and by their willingness and interest in helping us, they have made it possible for us to put together in, we hope, a pleasing manner, this record of our high school years. At this point we would also like to give our profound thanks to Mrs. Holt, who was responsible for our having a very different and more inspiring graduation. Dale Jones, Prom Chairman, was responsible for transfiguring the high school gym into a gay Paris scene with sidewalk cafes. In the center of the floor stood the typical bandstand which housed Al. Jarvis and his orchestra. Midway through the evening Mary-Jane Borgstrom and Joe Lingle were crowned as King and Queen by runners-up Ronnie Lathrope and Patti-Jo Thomas. Other members of the royal court were Sally Parker, Marion Crowley, Linda Wolter, Alice Bodette, Dave Riley, Dale Jones, Phil Edwards, and Ray Cushman. 44 Se tcox Grandpa Goes to College, a three-act comedy by John Nash, was presented by the Class of '59. Grandpa was played by Donnie Lathrope. Other members of the cast were: Bill Heinz as Elihu, Lee Walker as Doug, Marion Crowley as Maxine, Larry Tittemore as Elmer, Donnie Burden as Herman, Mary-Jane Borgstrom as Mary, Betty Conefry as Ruth, Maureen Kirk as June, Jane Allen, Alice Golden and Sally Parker as co-eds, and Eddie Tryonoviech as Sam. Prompting was done by Carol Greiner; lighting, by Charles Purcer. Mr. Drew, director, and Linda Wolter, student director, worked for weeks with the members of the cast in preparation. Section, This year, Senior Day at New Milford High School differed from those of previous years. Instead of having to go to school the whole day to attend classes, the seniors were dismissed at 12:15 for a picnic at Young's Field. We drove down to the field and got right into the picnic mood by doing what is done at most picnics; we started lunch. We enjoyed the food brought by the girls and the soda provided by the boys. After we finished eating, a softball field was laid out. The game played, ended in a lopsided victory for one side. Horseshoe pegs were set up and a few seniors played horseshoes. One member of the class went fishing in the nearby Housa-tonic River. The weather was perfect for a picnic and everyone present had a good time including the four teachers who were with us, Miss Keeler, Mr. Devin, Mr. Newman, and Mr. Trask. First Row: A. Barney, B. The Junior Varsity came out with only one victory this year. Many of the girls were new to both the school and the sport. We all hope they continue working hard and someday become varsity girls. The guards were: Darlene Dorwin, Helen Dulski, Barbara Kelleher, Susan Lundgren, and Susan Smith. The teams were coached by Miss Krupinski. The Seniors would like to wish the remaining girls the best of luck in the coming season. Left to right: N. Zeiner, D. Dorwin, H. Dulski, S. Smith, P. Rusch, M. Schimpf, J. Mackenzie, B. Kelleher, S. They all did an excellent job of keeping up the school spirit at the basketball games. Under the direction of their captain, Mary-Jane Borgstrom, and their advisor, Miss Dow, new cheers were worked out and learned, and some members of the squad made their own uniforms. Their manager was Joanne Anderson, who also worked hard with the girls. 82 Kathleen Antoni, Patti-Jo Thomas, Sally Parker, Mandy Pease, Carol Csutoras, Alice Golden. Having achieved a 14-3 regular season record, the boys went on to clinch the first two tournament games only to be beaten in their quarter final game by one point at the hands of Terryville. Next year's Varsity squad will sorely miss the experience of the eight graduating players and two senior managers. Roger Krusky Carl Blackman D. Richmond 292 R. Cushman 192 P. Edwards 170 J. Second Row: Pat Peet, Roger Krusky, Charlie Purcer, Sterling Heacock, Larry Tittemore. After having a practically new squad for the 1958 Cross Country Season, the boys did as well as anticipated, winning five, losing four, and tying two. Then the runners succeeded in winning third place laurels in CIAC small school competition, and winning eighteenth position in overall state competition. Since many of the better runners were underclassmen, it points toward even greater success in future competition under the experienced coaching of Russ Devin. Third Row: Dennis Rothe, Pat Peet, Howard Pease, Barry Ramsey, Bob Douskey, Fred Deschaine. One of the greatest athletic highlights at New Milford High School this year occurred when the Greenwave Indoor Track Team scored a decisive victory by edging Woodbury by three points for the CIAC Indoor Track and Field Championship at Yale's Coxe Cage. Among the scoring division were Carl Blackman, who placed first in the high jump with a five feet four inch tally, second in the 600 yard run, and fifth in the 60 yard dash. Dave Riley was the other first place winner with top honors in the 60 yard low hurdles, and fourth place laurels in the 300 yard run. Ray Cushman was a triple winner with second award in the 300 yard run, third in the 60 yard dash and third in the shot put. Roger Krusky was a double winner with second in the broad jump and third in the 600 yard run. Among others placing in the victory were Phil Edwards, Sterling Heacock, Pat Peet, Bob Douskey, Fred Deschaine, and Howard Pease. A great deal of credit is due to Coach Russ Devin and his great athletes for adding another trophy to those already on display at New Milford High School. 87 First Row: S. Ormenyi, H. Polzun, M. Campbell. 7 This year's track team had a successful season considering the fact that it was a rebuilding year. The Greenwave placed second in the CIAC State competition and third in the HVSL track meet. Dave Riley, 10' 6 pole vaulter, was one of two individuals in the history of New Milford High School to qualify for the New England Track meet. No records were broken this season but the following threatened the school records: Person and Event Dave Riley (Pole Vault) Carl Blackman (High Jump) Tony York (Javelin) 1959 Best Record 10'6 10'6Va 5'10'' 5'1 OV2 148 3 151'9 2 Next year's squad will lack the experience of the graduating members: Dave Riley, Carl Blackman, Tony York, Roger Krusky, Marty Cherniske, Harry Polzun, Bill Heinz, and Don Clarke. Mr. Devin, under adverse conditions, is doing an exceptional job, year in and year out, with the facilities he has at his disposal. We, the class of 1959, sincerely hope that funds will be appropriated for proper facilities for the track team with the coming of a new high school. However, they did as well as could be expected under such conditions. They were coached by Miss Goldman, who also did a fine job. The graduating members are: Jane Allen, Joanne Anderson, Joan Dunham, Martha Benjamin, Vivian Johnson, Alferetta Larsen, and Susan Sensenbrenner. The girls leaving this year wish the remaining players the best of luck next year. The girls were defeated in all of their games this year losing to Newtown, Wamogo and Woodbury. Of the games played, all were seven inning games, with Mary-Jane Borgstrom doing an excellent job as pitcher. Seniors leaving are: Sue Sensenbrenner, Flo Jurgelon, Jane Allen, and Mary-Jane Borgstrom. The team wishes to thank Miss Goldman for all her patience and assistance in coaching them. Second Row: Phil- Edwards, Charley Purcer, Cliff Johnson, Jim Osborne, Joe Lingle, Ray Cushman, Howie Pease and Allie Yarochowicz. “SaAefaU Under the capable direction of Joe Wiser, the baseball team fulfilled the expectations of all concerned by going on to win the southern division HVSL championship. The team was led by the pitching of captain Allie Varochowiz, the slugging of Ray Cushman, and the surprise performance of Howie Pease. The Greenwave compiled a 10-2 record for the season, losing one game to Washington, 1-0, and the other to Woodbury, 3-0. Both of these defeats were avenged during the season. Due to conflicts in scheduling, the team was unable to play off the HVSL north-south championship with Barkhamsted. Phil Edwards smashed the previous school record for a season's batting average of .466 with an average of .472. The departing seniors are: Allie Yarochowicz, Ray Cushman, Joe Lingle, Phil Edwards, Dave Richmond, Larry Tittemore and Charles Purcer. At the Athletic Banquet, Allie.Yarochowicz was the recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award and Howie Pease received the Most Improved Player Award. The Greenwave was forced to play many of its games on the road due to the conditions at Young's Field during the first month of the season.. A great vote of thanks from everyone is due Joe Wiser for the leadership he has again shown this year. 90 i Larry Tittemore Ray Cushman Phil Edwards Charlie Purcer Dave Richmond Joe Lingle Allie Yarochowicz INDIVIDUAL RECORDS AB R H TB RBI PO A E BB SO PCT.
