Sam was very popular with our class because, with all his extra-curricular activity, he never once received demerits. In case you don’t remember him, he sat in the seventh row in Mr. Graham's room. Sam always worked very hard and managed to get his education in a minimum of six years. He has now realized that his future is in aviation, a career which had its beginning in Mr. Kelly’s fifth period study. Here is his story l! We entered our Freshman year with the thought in mind that we had finally reached the top floor and the mysteries it contained. We held our class meeting and elected Mr. Lynch our advisor and the class officers. who were as follows: President, Eleanor Hager; Vice-President, Jim Sullivan; Secretary, Mike Crowley; and Treasurer, Harry Newby. Our Sophomore year was quite different because we were never allowed to forget the immortal words of Mr. Kelly, This is the year that we separate the wise men from the fools , and it was our hardest year. We again elected Mr. Lynch our advisor and the class officers were: President, Ed Law; Vice-President, Lynn Hendrix; Secretary, Mike Crowley; and Ed Bouquillon as Treasurer. The theme of our social that year was Friday the Thirteenth and contrary to the idea of the theme, the social was very successful. On the eighteenth of June we had our class picnic at the Lake. Everybody went and we had a great time. That year was the last one for Mr. Lynch in our school and the class gave him a watch as a token of appreciation. Our Junior year started off in a flurry of activity. We had elections and chose Mr. Fullerton as our new advisor. Our class officers were: President. Lynn Hendrix; Vice-President. Our Prom was the biggest event of the year and we called it My Blue Heaven. Marion Maloney was crowned Queen and Lynn Hendrix reigned as King. Everyone danced under a star-lit sky, streaked with moon beams that blended into the romantic setting. In March we received our class rings which made us feel, even more, a part of the class. At last our senior year had arrived. Now, instead of one class meeting a week, we had several. Mr. Fullerton stayed as our advisor and Mr. Bucknam became our Yearbook advisor. The co-editors were Mary Yarochowicz and Marion Maloney. The class election results were: President, Enid Greenhaus; Vice-President, Eddie Law; Secretary, Shirley Allen; and Paul Douskey, Treasurer. We held the Harvest Moon Hop in the fall and Liberace (Larry Schindler) was our big star attraction. At this time it can be well remembered by all that throughout the four years of high school, Robert Stone has been in charge of providing the best in music for our socials. At Christmas time we held our Silver Bells prom. Marion Maloney was crowned Queen, and we were all pretty proud because she is the first girl in a long time to be queen for two years. Ed Law was king of the prom. Everyone came in their holiday best and danced in the light of the Christmas tree. Next on the agenda was the Senior Play. Mr. Kenny was our play director and we selected Night Must Fall , the thrilling play about a psychopathic killer. The play was held on April 16 and the auditorium was packed. Time had almost caught up with us. In a few short weeks, we were to receive our diplomas. Already the plans were being made for class night and as I look back, I can truthfully say, those were the four best years of our lives. CUSS I1 Ml UK H Dear May, What an exciting experience 1 had this weekend, start at the beginning and tell you the whole story. I left La Guardia Airport a little before noon as I did not want to miss the noon take-off. In Mike Crowley s new Jet Airliner, it is only a matter of minutes now-a-days. As I took my seat, I noticed many of our former classmates on the plane. Bob Stone, the famous disk jockey, was flirting with one of our hostesses, Nancy Lingle. Our other hostess, Diane Flynn, was telling Don Moore how much she enjoyed his set for the latest Broadway hit, Night Fell , the sequel to our own Senior play Night Must Fall. Suddenly 1 was attracted by a red flash. It was Marion Maloney. She made her fortune in the world's newest industry, raising guppies. I was sitting next to Enid Greenhaus, the President of the Anthropological Society of Lower Slobovia. Anthropology didn’t seem to interest me very much though. It reminds me too much of Pop Kelly's Ancient History class. By the way, I am the head O. T.R. at the New York Hospital for Occupational Therapy. Barbara Douskey and Judy Van Ronk are nurses there also. The Carlson Twins are nurses at the Graham Memorial Hospital founded by Dr. Wynne Barringer. This hospital was set up especially for people who have to recuperate from Mr. Graham's jokes. Glancing back, I could see the Secretary of Agriculture, Jim Sullivan talking to Ken Lathrop about his new farm entitled Ken’s Kennel Corporation for Class A Cows. Richard McGoldrick has bought out the McCormick industry and is now selling McGoldrick's Automatic Mash Hoppers to the poultry farm run jointly by Bernard McCarroll and Roger Bennitt. Bernard has developed a new kind of chicken which lays fried eggs sunny side up. Dave Benedict, owner of the Transcontinental Trucking Firm of America transports Charles Flynn’s top grade cattle to Green Acre Farm run by George Green. Maybe you saw in the papers, Ed Schultz is the new Jet King of the Indianapolis Speedway. He took the title from Martin Alessio who is now a retired millionaire, Martin's favorite hobby is to take the girls for a ride and scare them by going over the 200 mile an hour speed limit. Herman Ludewig’s great discovery of a Uranium for Peace plan, whereby all the uranium goes to heat the super highways instead of destructive use was supplemented by Ted Thowless’ ingenious invention The Motor Man . This robot takes the place of the chief causes of traffic accidents, human drivers, and eliminates the necessity of women drivers. June 19, 1975 I witnessed the departure of the rocket ship to Mars. But wait -- let me Wayne Emmons has gone into the toy business, and is making jet-propelled paper airplanes dedicated to school teachers all over the world. He showed his invention to Mary Yarochowicz who had brought her class to the airport. She seemed to think it was a little too complicated for her third grade class, but Joan Sherwood’s identical triplets seemed to change her mind. Mary has quite a few children of our classmates in her class. Elsie Easton, Ruth Hungerford, Mary Lucas, and Connie Long are enjoying a few minutes of relaxation while their children are under Mary’s watchful eye. Finally we reached the Yucca Flats in Nevada, the testing grounds for the rocket ship of which Larry Schindler was chief engineer. This place used to be the world famous Fullerton Driving School for Hopeless Drivers. SII'ERLITIIES BEST DRESSED: Beverley Villane Donald Moore 22 BEST ATHLETES: Eric Johnson Louise Gawel CUSS PltOPHECV As we disembarked, we heard the chief receptionist, Shirley Allen telling the crowd all about the planned trip to Mars. We learn that Judy Piliero is at last realizing her ambition to travel in space. She will pilot her Space Buggy as she fondly calls the rocket ship. Jack Sanford will be radio-man. The seats in the rocket are very comfortable. They were designed by Law’s Lofty Lounging Chairs for Long Lousy English Classes! 1 Many celebrities from the sports world were there also. Warren Smith, third baseman for the Yankees, was discussing with Louise Gawel the new variation of the knuckle-ball which Ricky Johnson has perfected. It is called Ricky’s Rickety Ripping Roller. Louise Gawel is the coach of the Connecticut University Woman's basketball team. This team, played by men's rules, has defeated the U-Conn men’s team four years in a row, and is now the champion basketball team of the world. In the reception room, the radio was blaring out the good news that Tommy Wallian’s beloved Brooklyn Bums had finally won the World Series. The armed forces are having a parade for the big event. Janot Armbruster is a sergeant in the Air Force, and Marjorie McBride is a sergeant in the WAC’s. Squeaky Warner has just returned from the South Sea Islands where he has been commanding his fleet. David Adair is in the Army now. As I looked around the airport, I saw Sue Stackhouse busily drawing sketches advertising the Pepsi-Cola Industry in which John Gallagher has made a fortune in his stock. Barbara Hope, the famed model for Life Magazine and Sally Bennett, Mrs. America of 1975, were discussing the beautiful hand carved furniture that Rocky Clinton had on exhibit. Alice Boltrom is now Secretary of the new Rocket Propulsion Commission and Marilyn Yoblonski is the Secretary of the Atomic Energy Plant headed by Paul Douskey. Pete Cronin designed the new modern office building. The restaurant at the airport is run by Mary Harz. They specialize in chocolate milk from Ken Lathrop’s farm of brown cows. Many of Mary’s customers are wearing the latest hair styles by Beverley Villane, Gloria Johnson, and Lorraine Olson. Leech’s Electrical Appliance Store seems to be drawing a lot of attention Mary Reynolds and Pat Young were demonstrating a new appliance invented by Ed Bouquillon when the fire alarm went off and Leroy Ladd. Fire-chief, came racing down the street in his new Super-Jet Fire Engine for Faster Service. ’’ Next to the airport is Cromwell's Coffin Corporation run jointly by Lynn Hendrix and Harold Cromwell whose motto is I dig you the most . I received a letter from Elsbet Kurtz today . . She is teaching Home Economics and Sports in Germany. Sue Noble is a Phys. Ed. teacher too. Bill Hopkins is getting his exercise another way. He is showing his prize cattle at the World Fair this year and is expected to win most of the top prizes. Well, it has been twenty successful years since we were in New Milford High. I hope the next twenty will be as successful for all of us. In the fall, the Council put out the Freshman Handbook, a must for new students. Through the Green Feather Drive, sponsored by the Council, more money was raised this year for worthy charities than in any year. In order to increase the treasury, the Council started a refreshment stand for use at basketball games. This idea was very profitable and proved to work very well. Let’s hope it is continued in the following years. In April, the Regional Meeting of Student Councils was held here. About forty representatives of neighboring schools attended the meeting, which consisted of discussion groups and an informal supper. These meetings proved very profitable to all those who participated. This year’s Student Council would like to wish the incoming Council the best of luck in all their endeavors. 44 OFFICERS'- Preside 1 Veep Secretary Treasurer Lynn Hendrix pave Peet Nancy Eingie Pete Cronin DRAMATIC CLUB At the beginning of the year the Dramatic Club held its first meeting. So many turned out that the Juniors and Seniors met for the first half of the year. This group presented “Opening Night;’’ a one-act play by Cornelia Otis Skinner. For a Christmas pageant the younger group put on a short play “Mary’s Mother”. The lighting and sound effects in this play were excellent. Mr. Edward Kenny was the ■ director of the Dramatic Club. TCffllTK CLUB GLEE GLIB n n O The Glee Club was directed by Harold Hunt again this year. The group, all girls, have been singing two times a month. Due to the lack of time, the club has been limited to the amount it can do but it has been a great deal of fun. The members of the club feel that a large mixed glee club would be a big asset to the school. iiTsuimm This club, consisting of about 12 girls, meets every other week. They work on a variety of projects including stuffed animals, trays, baskets and clothes. There were no dues and so the individual had to purchase her own materials. Mrs. Lyons was our original advisor. Miss Pheiffer has now taken over the direction of this club. The girls and boys have enjoyed participating in competitive sports under the able direction of Mr. Wiser. This type of club was a new venture at New Milford High and proved itself to be highly successful. SPORTS CLUB CHANTICLEER CLUB The Chanticleer Club was composed of forty-five members. Mrs. Quist directed the staff and her cheerful assistance was appreciated by all members in their attempt to publish the school paper. Mary Yarochowicz was Editor, Shirley Allen and Ed Orzech, Associate Editors. Sue Stackhouse was the Art Editor and Susan Noble the Sports Editor. Business and Technical managers were Shelia Stack and Marjorie McBride. This year’s automobile club consisted of about twenty-five members. The officers were; President, Eddie Law; Vice-President, Eddie Schultz; Secretary-Treasurer, Mike Crowley. Our advisor was Mr. Devin. We had many fruitfuldis-cussions and demonstrations of automobile principles. One of our members gave us a Model “A truck. We took ’t apart and explained each part to the fellows who didn't know what they were. We put it back together and it runs fine. Most of the boys learned a lot from the club. Under the direction of Mr. Chrapliwy, the boys have had instructions on Archery, how to tie flies for fishing and the safety of handling pistols. The officers are: President, Austin Barney Secretary, Pinky Fogarty; and Treasurer, Ricky Nelson. A shooting match is planned for the spring, if the boys can find a range. I The Projectionist Club takes care of all movies which are shown in the school. Differing from former years, the club is not solely composed of boys, but has a few girl members. Mr. White advised the club again this year and his guidance was appreciated by all members. ESA • 01-1 The Aeronautics Club this year accomplished many things. It staged a model airplane meet, watched a film on the Marine Air Wings, participated in many lectures and discussions on the airplane. It owes its thanks to Mr. Graham and Mr. Norman Couch, and a special debt of gratitude to Mr. Bucknam for his excellent assistance as our advisor. The officers were: President, John Gallagher; Vice-president, Larry Schindler; Secretary, Herman Ludewig; Treasurer, Jack Sanford. DANCING CLUB Although the dancing club was only able to meet a few times this year, everyone enjoyed themselves when they got together. The members of the club appreciated the assistance of Mrs. Mellonino, Miss Krupinski and Mr. Fullerton. Officers of the F. F. A. are as follows; President, Charles Flynn; Vice President, James Sullivan; Secretary, Roger Bennitt; Treasurer, Rick McGoldrick; Reporter, George Green; Sentinel, Don Hungerford. F.F.A. Some chapter and individual accomplishments for the year include; service work for the school, the hospital and farm and townspeople, a chapter garden, fire prevention, Grange essays, demonstrations, trips, exhibits, judging and showing animals, project tours, picnics, and applepicking as a money earning means. Members of the Soccer Team were: S. Easton, J. Noble, J. AUingham, G. Buckbee, E. Charles, D.Hagstrom, W. Smith D. Collins, R. Anderson, J. MacLaren, J. Hine, P. Brown, W. Hamlin, R. Baldwin, T. Thowless P. Cronin, F. Kaminski, J, McHann, E. Bouquillion, and E. Johnson. Soccer at N.M.H.S. is at present in its infancy and not much can be expected in the way of scores in the victory column. Although defeat reared its ugly head in game after game, team spirit always seemed to be good. It is a good guess that in future contests, and with more experience, the N. M. H.S. soccer team can expect much brighter results. Schools played during the season were: Litchfield, Newtown, Watertown and Thomaston. s snorienea Because of the polio epidemic. However, thirty-eight girls comprised the team which enjoyed a few weeks of practice and two games. The first contest was played at Newtown; let us say simply that we did not return victorious. The girls suffered a heartbreaking loss of 5-4 in their second game at Washington. Although we are losing some of our Senior girls who will be greatly missed, the team is looking forward to a successful season in the fall. Thank you, Louise, Susan, Marion, Barbara, Enid and Judy for your sportsmanship and friendship. Good luck to all of you! BOYS’ BASKETBALL VARSITY The boys' Varsity Basketball Team ended up the '54 and '55 season with a 10 and 6 record. The N.M.H.S. team scored two victories over each of the following teams; Newtown, Morris, Washington and Woodbury. What seemed to be the hardest game of the entire season was the second game with Bethel. The game was played hard all the way and New Milford won only by a small margin. Both Abbott Tech, and Litchfield defeated us twice. The last and final game was in the Tournament with Ea’st Hampton. New Milford lost but the team did the best they could. The team loses-five senior boys this year; Lynn Hendrix, Pete Cronin, Squeak Warner, Eddie Bouquillon and Ricky Johnson. This is four more lost than last year, so here's wishing luck to the team in '56. (MSSMUim This year’s cross-country team did quite well. The team had one meet with Litchfield, which it won, and lost the meet with Danbury, ending with a one-one record. Because of the polio epidemic, many invitations to compete with other schools had to be refused. The team will lose one Senior, Paul Douskey; but back again next year will be Bob Kallen-bach, Austin Barney, Don Freeman, Ed MacKenzie, Fred Conefry, and Billy Reap. TRM This year’s track team was a young team with only three lettermen, Austin Barney, George Buckbee, and Don Freeman, returning. There were seven freshman boys who came out and worked hard this year. Mention should be made of the results of the Indoor C.I.A.C. State Track meet where New Milford captured third place. VARSITY BASEBALL For the first time in many years a New Milford baseball team came home with a championship. From the first game right thru the season the Green and White were on top of the league. Our league record was eleven and one, while the overall record was eleven and three. We lost the league championship to the state champions: Terryville. Jim Sullivan’s fine hitting toward the end of the season helped him gain a 300 batting average. Rick Johnson handled most of the hurling chores and he had a season’s average of nine and one. Members of the team who hit over 300 are: Skip Warner, Rick Johnson, Pete Cronin, Bob Kallenbach and Jim Sullivan. Eleven varsity members have graduated, but Coach Joe Wiser will again next year sport a good team. 60 SOFTBALL This year we had a comparatively young team. Many underclassmen came out for the team. Although we only won four games out of the ten we played, we played a good ball game. We had nine players batting an average of over 400. Our pitcher, Rose Ann Blair, was presented a softball inscribed with the autographs of the team. Our captain was Louise Gawel and the managers were Pat Caldwell and Judy Piliero. Mr. Graham was our coach. Here are the scores of our games: May 3 New Milford (6) W oodbury (14) away May 1 0 New Milford (5) Woodbury (15) home May 12 New Milford (9) Washington (32) away May 1 7 New Milford (19) Bethel (7) home May 19 New Milford (11) Bethel (7) away May 23 New Milford (24) Washington (23) home May 26 New Milford (16) Newtown (17) away June 1 New Milford (14) Litchfield (27) away June 3 New Milford (9) Newtown (ID home June 6 New Milford (10) Litchfield (8) home This year’s Junior Varsity Team was the first one in two years and the players were all new. The team consisted primarily of Freshmen and Sophomores. The record was not too impressive, but that is due to inadequate facilities and limited time for practice. The team had a 1-3 record this year. Although the team will lose s'ome competent players next year, there will no doubt be plenty of new players from the Junior High to take their places. This should also prove to be more challenging as the competition for positions will be much keener. Fred Conefry pitched 3 games with Skip” Waller and Dave Collins sharing the remaining one. Douglas was the leading hitter. ■ r Out of four matches played this year, the tennis team won three. We beat Litchfield twice, Ridgefield once, and lost our match with Staples High in Westport. The members of the team coached by Mr. Bucknam were : Joan Slowick, Betty McGarr, Marion Maloney, Enid Greenhaus, Judy Stoddard, Nancy Lingle, Rita Bull, and Pat Went. TEMIS ARCHERY The winners of the 1955 Archery Tournament were Ken Strong, a Sophomore, and Sandra Steck, a Junior. The runner-ups were Jim McHann, a Junior, and Carole Knittle, a Junior. In the fall, a Freshman, Becky Knittle was elected to the cheering squad. Sandra Steck will succeed Nancy Lingle as captain next year. Miss Pfeifer has taken over as advisor in the absence of Mrs. Lyons. Their cheering has helped greatly to raise much-needed school spirit.
