ll People Should Live Together in Harmony Dear Reader. This book is for you. Within these 300 pages is recorded an outline of the past year's events and activities. We, as the Swastika staff, have earnestly attempted to capture as many of the rare moments as possible and preserve them to aid in your memories. These activities were made possible only through your ideas and perseverence. The theme of the 1978 Swastika, All people should live together in harmony, should exemplify the unique environ- ment in which we at NIVISU live. No where else do so many different and varied cultures live and work together in such harmony. The Land of Enchantment works its magic in subtle ways, growth and expansion in the area is inevitable yet, as residents rarely do we attempt to prove our glory, only underline our Pride. A small, organized group of talented students have worked over 3,000 man hours to compile this history book. ln my opinion they have done a commendable job, but, the decision is also your's to make. Examine this book with an open mind and heart. See yourself in the pages and I admonish you to cry or laugh out loud if the feeling strikes when you see yourself sleeping in class or tossing a frisbee. Congratulations is extended to all graduating seniors now moving on to new and different encounters with life-Some- day soon vve will follow in your footsteps. Thank you for your interest and support, because of your concern l wish to dedicate this year's Swastika to the student body of NMSU and all those others who have worked to improve the quality of student life. Enough said, continue to explore this yearbook and remember, history repeats itself until its lessons are learned. ENCOUNTER 27

A MESSAGE FROIVI NIVISU PRESIDENT GERALD THOMAS This year, 1978, New Mexico State University is celebrating its 90th anniversary. The theme AIl people should live together in harmony, is very appropriate as we look back over 90 years of history to the fall of 1 888 when our doors were opened as Las Cruces College in a rented, three-room building. The university's frontier origins were highlighted by the death of our first poten- tial graduate, Samuel Steel, who was shot by a drunken cowboy in downtown Las Cruces in 1893. Thus, the first commencement took place the following year, 1894, with the graduation of four men and one young lady. A plaque near the front door of Hadley Hall carries the names of these four students. With the class of 1978, our total graduates will reach approximately 27,- 174. The accelerated growth in recent years can be il- lustrated by noting that more than half of the students who have ever graduated 'from N MSU since 1888 have 28 ENCOUNTER NMSU Presidant Gerald W. Thomas 7LlC Q6 O GA 3 Yi LQ' m AA C41 4 IVERSX . graduated while I have served as President-a shortl exciting eight-year period. It is also appropriate that we are using this year to lc into the future-to plan for the year 1988, when we x celebrate our hundreth year of service to this State Nation. This planning, under the guidance of Task Fo 88 a group of 88 distinguished citizens from throught New Mexico interacting with student leaders, fact and staff-will force us to think more carefully about I past, the present, and the confusing and challeng future. This comprehensive planning will also force us examine our unique cultural mix, our unique 1 vironmental setting, our unique opportunities to ci tribute to the obvious need for people of all nations live together in harmony.
