Thanks for all of this, ' Afr. B, .-...this to us is the real spirit of publicity. PRESIDENT ' S ADDRESS The Class of 1956 will always hold a special place with me because it is my first class. I look forward to great things for you, the members of the Class of 1956. Many of you will return to this campus in a few years holding responsible positions which will reflect your ability; the training which you obtained here and, of course, at home. It is my hope and belief that you will find the training at New Mexico A. and M. of constant value throughout your working life. I hope also that you will look back upon your years at the college with an ever increasing satisfaction both as to training and your general development as a person. Many times, as you move forward in your career, you will represent New Mexico A. and M. in the minds of your associates and friends. What you do and what you say about the college will mean much to the college. I know that you will constantly be builders of your Alma Mater both because of loyalty and because by build- ing your college you also build the value of your degree. We will look forward to your returning to the campus often and it is my hope that the college and I, per- sonally, can keep in close touch with you in the years that lie ahead. Rodkey College Medical Staff UPPERCLASSMEN 15, FROSH6 For weeks on end the energetic Frosh practiced and held scrim- mage among themselves preparing for the anrvual Freshman Up- perclassmen Football Game. Come the day before the game, the Uppert lassmen didn ' t even have a team. The TKE ' s felt fired up so they volunteered themselves along with some strong outside help in the form of Bill Weir, Eddie Hebert, and Charley Gladney. Each team tied little flags to the back of their belts which when yanked out would signify a tackle. The gladiators stood facing each other from opposite ends of the stadium. The Upperclassmen in red jerseys and the Frosh in white. The Frosh kicked off. Speedy Sandy Poeter pulled in the ball and fell in behind the blockers. The run-back carried the ball to mid-field. Mickey Thomas, m a series of plays dropped a 55 yard pass in the hands of scatback Rueben Marquez who then ram- bled for the first score. The Frosh then scored on a series of Up- jierclassmen penalties. With the score tied Fullback Clabe Wicker smashed through the Frosh line and nailed Pappas for a safety. From then on it was the Upperclassmen ' s game. Bill Davis, Stu Carlson, Dick Mullins, and Rod Johnson, smashed Frosh ball car- riers to the ground time after time. Ape Haydu, Tom McGrath, Jack Mayficld, Dick Johnson, and Pete Vance opened big holes in the freshman defensive line. Upperclassmen backfield men in the t ' orms of Mickey Thomas, Bill Weir, Sandy Poeter, Rueben Mar- cjuez, and Charley Gladney would then thunder through these holes for gigantic chunks of yardage. Big Bert Coleman of the I ' rosh made spectacular tackles for the team and several times near- Frank Steel (45) leads the way for Mickey Thomas (53) in an Upperclass- men lunge for yardage. -4 f Vvv 1 k - HIh ' ' ' ' ' - • JKM K y W K ' - ' J.: ; ly sparked the Frosh to another score with passes to Bonomo and Fullingham. Once more Mickey Thomas hits Frank Steele with a bullet pass of 35 yards for an- other Score. Desperation runs were then turned back by such defensive stars as Hebert, Ricky Ashburn, Jerry Risinger, and Don Wunsch. The game ended in a blood- y ole ' victory for the Upperclassmen. Gary Clark and his Ashmolean Marching Society furnished halftime entertainment. Ed Wayne was an- nouncer. Mickey Thomas was chosen outstanding player with I 53 yards from scrimmage. Bert Coleman was outstanding Frosh. The fine results more than satisfied the effort. •n-n  ' fffffffiitfl Aggie Twirlers, Pauline Rosenberry Beeta Foley Joanna Pickens and Norman Crider Norman Crider, A. M ' s great twirler, won the Na- tional Championship last year. Harry Dale has led the Aggie Marching Band through three hitihlv su( rcssful years L . ) This is the Aggie Marching Band, trom whicli sUidirnlb ol the S)mDliunic Band are selected. The Symphonic Band made a state concert tour in the spring, playing to over 12,000 people. Highlights of the year were an appearance as guest band at the American Bandmasters ' Association Con ' cntion in Santa Fe, and the presen- tation of a spring concert with guest soloist Rafael Mende ., world ' s greatest trumpet virtuoso. The Aggie trumpet section includes students from St. Louis to Panama The old Aggie uniforms pictured have been replaced with m.iroon ait-I while uniforms complcjnented with gold accessories and topped with West Point shakos. The A gie Collegians, umler the direction of Ray Tross, play for campus dances and man ' fraternity formals, as well as school proms and activities within a no mile radius. B Roberta W.itson A AND M CHORUS The A ic Chorus of 85 members sang two concerts duriiit; the first semester. One was the annual Christ- mas Vespers Concert--the other was a concert for the Service Club given at the White Sands Proving Grounds. The Aggie Chorus is a new organization on cainpus, ineeting at noon three days a week and giving more students an opportunity to sing than an organization meeting in regular class hours would. The second semester included a performance of t ' le Pai.helbel Magnificat by this organization. CULLLCIATI: CHORAI.EERS The Choraleers is a group of 18 singers. Their appearances included the Christmas Vespers, White Sands Choral Program, numerous appearances before clubs and other meetings. The big event was a full week ' s tour of North- eastern New Mexico including Truth or Consequen- ces, Belen, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Taos, Raton, Clay- ton and 1-t. Sumner. Later in the spring this group participated in a program of German Lieder and another of all con- temporary music. Despite a short schedule and lark of practice time, the Aggie B sc]uad showed several players with abil- ity who may be able to fill vacancies left by the five graduating seniors on the varsity. Though the record showed fewer wins than losses, the squad gave fine performances against teams whose rosters boasted several ex- perienced college j)layers. For the most part, the opponents were AAU teams and ■ service teams. As Coach Askew ' s graduate assistant. Coach Ronald Wiltbank sacrificed much time and effort to get the squad ready for these games. This season, Aggie fans saw their team, with a season record of sixteen wins and seven losses, topple some of the better teams in the nation. After defeating New Mex ' ico Western and New Mexico University, the Ag- gies went on the road to defeat McNeese College and Centenary College. Returning home, the Aggies racked up wins o er Hamline and Murray State before drop- ping the first game to powerful Kentucky Wesleyan. Again on the road, the Aggies bowed to fifth ranked N ' anderbiit before subduing a strong University of Ten- nessee five. The detensive-minded Aggies moved into Border Con- ference play by rolling over Arizona with a thirty-three pomt victory. The fi)llowing night against Arizona State of Tempe, the Aggies lost a tough overtime battle to a hot squad of Sun -Devils. Hardin-Simmons was next on ilie list ot Aggie ictims before the more and more powcrtul unit proved that the first victory over the UN M Lobos was no fluke, beating the Albuquerque group on their home court. The Aggies lost a bitter home-court struggle to the Texas Western Miners prior to taking a brief respite from conference play. This so called ■ breather was a determined Santa Barbara team which ga e the Aggies quite a bit of trouble before the State College live marked up another win. Moore ' s in for a crucial lay- up. Still hurt by Guthmuller s ab- sence, the Aggies were dealt still another blow by the loss of Paul Plodzinski, who was declared ineligible the day of the Hardin-Simmons game. In Plodzinski. the team lost the second highest rebounder and the conference leader in field goal percentage. Garcia Hall on third place by outplaying th:- Lambda Chi in the run-offs. The YC ' s obtained the basketball trophy after a hard fought, well played game against the Theta Chi. Third place in basketball was taken by the TKE ' s and fourth by the One-Point-Five. Dick Coyne of Sigma Pi crashed through the pins to capture the bowling championship. Terry Ego, Eight-Ball representative, claimed second place over Paul Mulligan of TKE who placed third in the run-offs. Singles in table tennis went to Ed Rounds of the Theta Chi after defeating Bill Davis of TKE in a fast and furious play-off. In the tabic tennis doubles a corabmation of Jim Kobashi, and Enricjuez Naranjo went ail the way to win the trophy. An Eight- Ball ictory. Nick Carter of the Y-C ' s racked up first in pool singles with DeWittSwanson and John Miller of the same organization taking the doubles title.
