playin Mr. Kirkpatrick devoted the early part of his life in pre- paration for the duties which he had chosen to znake his life work He was well qualified to perform the responsibilities he assumed in the guidance of the youth of our country. His counsel in school affairs was frequently sought as he was recognized as a man of authority and sound judgement. His excellent character and sincerity inspired many of his students to seek a higher education. His devotion to his duty, his fairness to all, and his keen interest in students won for him the high esteem and cooperation of the patrons in the com- munity which he served. A continued interest in former students was always manifested by Mr. Kirkpatrick. The joy of their higher attainments and success in life was a source of great satisfaction to him and was reflected in his daily conversation with his intimate friends. For two decades he rendered an untiring service to New Market School. This will always be remembered by his students, fellow teachers, and patrons of the school. It is a just tribute to his memory to say that he was most worthy of the respect and high regard of all who knew him. He was a friend to ally he was a citizen whose upright and noble life was a standard of emulation to his friends. He was ever ready to proffer a hand of aid, and his utmost efforts were exerted for the welfare and promotion of the school which he represented. Since 1934, the year we started our school careers, we have been an active, hilarious group, who have caused many a teacher to murmur 'Why did I ever let myself in for this !' There are four of the members of this class who have 'stuck together' through all the ups and downs of all twelve years. They are Ailene Swearingen, Harold Cash, David Myers, and Clayton Morgan. Our class has never had a large amount of members and in our four years of high school it has gradually become even smaller. Our first eight years of school were spent in annoying the teachers--in a playful way of course--and grasping the funda- mentals of Readin', 'Ritin' and 'Rithmetic. When we enrolled as Freshmen the class consisted of Z3 members--Shirley Bergman, Berley Britton, Marvin Burkett, Harold Cash, Eddie Deck, Theron Davis, Robert Long, Mary Mickels Clayton Morgan, David Myers, Harold Newlin, Ruth Palmer, Eu- gene Potter, Arthur Rice, Lorene Rosen, Max Servies, Robert Steele Ailene Swearingen, Geneva Todd, Oakel Tribbett, Darlene Wheeler, Doretha Wininger, and joe Zachary. Later in the year 5 more stu- dents enrolled. These were: Robert Lee Buser, Dale Maltsburger, Alice Nickols, Lindy Simms, and Ruth Lester. During our Freshmen year we had no outstanding activ- ities. We strutted around preening ourselves with self-ap- proval until the Seniors took us down a notch or two and smeared us with lip-stick. This deflated us quite a bit and thereafter in order to save ourselves embarrassment, we did all that was possible to please our enemy, the Seniors. At last we quit being green Freshies and became Sophomores. When we enrolled, we found that we had lost eight of our class- mates. These were Shirley Bergman, Robert Long, Harold Newlin, Ruth Palmer, Eugene Potter, Robert Steele, Oakel Tribbett, and Lorene Rosen. Roberta Rusk, Kenneth Gardner, and Robert Cox were our only new members. These changes having been made, we had a membership of ZZ. This year we knuckled down to our work and at long last gained our right to be juniors. At the starting of our junior year we had Z1 members. Lin- dy Simms had separated from the class during the summer and Lois Quigg had entered. This was our year of joyful events! 241: 'f -V' 5 I 1 W J P v L 1. s ll Pl 1 I L ' i Y 1 1 l,. x u I v J ' 41 10414444- First came our junior Play 'Star Crazy.' Every member of the class did some kind of work to help the play along to a successful end. After the play came the Class Tourney! The junior boys came out triumphant! With the coming of spring came the junior-Senior Reception. This was our first real grown-up entertaimnent, and we really put it over with a bang! It was held at the Club House at Craw- fordsville. The Club House was decorated like an Hawaiian Is- land. Palms were arranged over the floor to give the impression of a southern atmosphere. As we entered the Senior year we found we had lost 6 members. These were Robert Cox, Ruth Lester, Dale Maltsburger, Roberta Rusk, Doretha Wininger and joe Zachary. joan Steele and Betty Trimble entered into our class making a total of 17 members. Lukily all the members of the senior class--Berley Britton, Marvin Burkett, Bob Buser, Harold Cash, Theron Davis, Eddie Deck, Kenneth Gardner, Clayton Morgan, David Myers, Lois Quigg, Arthur Rice, Max Servies, Ailene Swearingen, joan Steele, Geneva Todd, Betty Trimble, and Darlene Wheeler--will get their diplomas in April. Several of our boys expect to start working for Uncle Sam at the end of the school year. The mernbers of our class who play on the New Market Basketball teams are: Marvin Burkett. Bob Buser, Harold Cash, Eddie Deck, Clayton Morgan, and David Myers. Our class officers are: President, Marvin Burkett, Vice President, Clayton Morgan, Secretary-Treasurer, Geneva Todd. Our sponsor is Mr. Paul Wilson. The members of the class who represent us on the Student Council are Marvin Burkett and Clayton Morgan. ' After our graduation in April we shall all go our into the world and either 'make or break' ourselves, No matter how many happy experiences or hardships we encounter, we will all remember the good times of the 'Class of l946.' 1 -.-4 ' :J .A,.-1. l . 1 1- , Imra- 1 -1+ -v -1 u .vimly-rr--v r vwyr V 1 1 Q n 1 . J' c ' A 1 PWM SENIOR CLASS WILL I heard two women talking the other day And brother! ljust couldn't miss a word Now if you'l1 not whisper a word I say I'll tell you just what I heard! Of course, I wouldn't want anybody to know That I had told you all of this And if you listen I'll go real slowg There's some things you don't want to miss. Myrtle stuck her head over the fence, And hollered at old woman Lossip Then's when all the gabbin' commence And my S'Ca1'S and garters! What gossip! Now you'd never catch me gossipin' like that I'd feel plum disgraced if you ever did I always go to the telephone anyway I don't want any old gossip hens buttin in. Now as I was sayin' there they was just talkin' and gabbin' like thirty Now listen real close to what I say And sometime I'll act like Gertie! They was talkin' about the Senior Class And what they were all going to will They're willin' it to the junior Class And some of the things just fit the bill. From what I hear Berley Britton's red hot temper is to go, To the girl in the junior Class by the name of Alice Lowe With his temper on top of what she's got, I don't think she'll need it though But Myrtle said that Berley insisted that his temper go to Alice Lowe. Marvin Burkett is giving his brains to Darrel Sandusky! I don't know why Darrel would want them-- They've grown so very musky! I think he'd better keep them for himself- -don't you! Oh! I guess not!--Some say Lois Kessler has enough for two! And Bob Buser is giving up his warm seat on the basketball bench He's willing it to Tomniy Webb, the boy from Bal Hinch! I hope Tommy keeps it warm for at least part of the year, So do I - then they can look at that ancient bench and say, 5Bob Buser sat here.' Did you know Harold Cash is willing his sense of humor away, l'll bet he'll be a great big grouch forever after that day! But who is he willing it to? - Who hasn't got a sense of humor? He's willing it to Emery Steele--it's the very latest rumor! U +'I . Kenneth Gardner is willing his two wonderful nicknamtes away For after he graduates he'1l likely have some wedding expenses to pay! And who is it that he thinks is worthy of these honorable names He says he thinks jesse Delano can use them to attract beautiful darnes. And Myrtle says Clayton Morgan is giving his voice away, He's willin' it to Berdina jones, who could easily use it every day But without his frog-horn Voice, what will Clayton do? Oh, he will get along, don't let it worry you. What is being willed to that gabby Barbara Wray She's almost as bad as Myrtle, she gabbs and flirts the livelong day! David Iwlyers is leaving her his ability to get engaged, She sure can cus it, maybe then she'd get some poor guy caged. JUN IOR-SEN IOR RECEPTION The members of the Senior Class, faculty, school board, and guests were delightfully entertained by the junior Class at a Reception held on the evening of April 13, 194-6 at the Turkey Run Inn. The dining room was artistically decorated in keeping with the Dutch theme. A three-course banquet was served, after which a program consisting of musical numbers, the prophecy, and class will was given. Dancing and card-playing provided the entertain- ment for the remainder of the evening. LAST OF SCHOOL EVENTS SCHEDULE April 13 junior-Senior Reception April 14- Baccalaureate April 19 Commencement April 19 School Dismissal CL Q NN Q Ja H . 1' Qu' i A n 1. WMM Senior Prophecy As I was driving peacefully along a highway one sunny afternoon I was struck full in the face by a huge colorful billboard glorifying the merits of the coming attraction: 'The Colossal Buser and Burkett Three Ring Circus.' This attracted my attention, so I came to a screach- ing halt, and gazed with awe UPOD this marvelous spectacle. I was compelled to stare with amazement at the main attraction which was comprised of two curvacious females who had emerged only a short time ago from the shores of tropical Hawaii, Hula Hula Steele, and Lulu Quigg. The billboard had aroused my curosity, so I waited brethlessly for this event. At last it came! standing in the midst of the enormous impatient crowd, with his club and whistle, was none other than E. P. Cassidy, directing people to their proper places. As I neared the ticket office, I was surprised to und my old friend Ailene, followed by her henpecked husband Hubie. Then my attention was attracted by the outrageous screams of the familiar barker, Max Servies. After my curosity forced me to enter this side show, I was amazed to see, beating his chest and making weird noises, Berley from Borneo. Also suffering from the intense heat was two-ton Tessie Trimble, the fat lady. Preparing to leave, I couldn't help from seeing gleaming swords rapidly disappearing down the throat of Tin-gullet Cash. After leaving this attraction, I suddenly was aroused by a commotion and I rushed to see two policemen dragging Theron Davis away from the Hula Hula girls. Searching for more entertainment, I entered the Big Top. Munching pop corn and cotton candy, I seated myself next to Kenny Gardner, and the fifth holder of his much worn engagement ring. The entertainment soon began as four monstrous elephants paraded around the three large rings, followed by Eddie Deck and a pitchfork. Flying through the air with the greatest of ease was the daring young man on the flying trapeeze, Mousy Myers, and his co-partner Trickey Todd. During this time the familiar clown Mopey Morgan, with huge red ears and nose and sawdust on his enormous shoes, was running madly from a stray cat. My interest now turned to the lion tamer, Slugger Wilson, who was bravely standing, armed only with a whip, a pistol, a bolo knife and a chair, before the lions Leo Buser and Browny Burkett, named for their owners. One ferocious roar from Leo caused Slugger to melt in his boots. But close by, ready to administer first aid was Doctor Rice and his assistant, Nurse McMahan. Upon leaving the big top I was shocked to see Darlene, the Grabble Gertie of the side show industry trying madly to attract anything faintly resembling a member of the male sex to her men only tent. Tired from an after-noon's adventure and astonished at seeing my old friends in such a life, I was ready to return home. However, as Ileft the circus grounds. I spied none other than Wolf Davis, making his fourth attempt to enter--yes, you've guessed it, the Hula Hula tent. L - f PWM Events of the junior Class After its record of achievements is covered with dust and cob-webs, the class of '47 will long be remembered as one with much ambition. The first step of the class was electing the officers as followsg john Etter, Pres.: Lois Kessler, Vice.. President, Katy Keys, Secretary-Treasurer. With Mrs. Quigg acting as sponsor, the class felt sure its junior year would be successful. This proved to be a correct prophecy, too, especially according to the financial standpoint. The source of income was mostly from the selling of school hats ice cream, etc. But let's start with the activities as they occurred. First in the diary of the class appears the class tourney, in which the class of '48 were forced to bow to the juniors by a score of 16- 12. However, in the final game of the tournament, it was the juniors turn to lose to the Seniors by a score of 15 to 32. Next in our diary appears the class party. It was held at a residence in New Market, and consisted of a hay ride followed by refreshments, and it seems a little black 'K-9' provided the entertainment. Many members of the class participated in a 3-act comedy, 'The Nutt Family,' which was produced at the school building on lvlarch 8, 1946. It was accepted by the audience with many favor- able remarks. On April 13, 1946, the Juniors gave with much preparation and grave pleasure the junior-Senior Reception held at the Turkey Run Inn. All of the class of '47 have enjoyed very greatly being jun- iors at dear old New Market High School, however, we are all looking forward to the Senior year beginning this fall. . The Freshmen boys have had several basketball games with other schools this season, but unfortunately our percentage isn't so high. The class officers this year are as follows: john Olson, Presidentg Carroll Terry, Vice President. Bob Whitecotton, Sec- retary Treasurer. fl guess the girls c1on't rate around here!! At the begininng of the year Mrs. Loudenback was chosen as our class sponsor. Mrs. Ward, who is now taking Mrs. I..oudenback's place, will be our sponsor. There are ll girls and 13 boys in our class. sffvfvfffxt Sophomore Class News We, the class of 1948, entered our Sophomore year with twenty- nine members enrolled. Four new members came during the year, making a total of thirty three members of the class. The year started with the election of officers for the year. Don Yount was elected Presidentg Margaret Booher, Vice President: and Velma Demoret, Secretary and Treasurer. The class chose Mr. Douglas for its sponsor. Six members of the class play in the band. They are: jane Gardener, Gylith Britton, Irene Toby, Anita Whiteley, Margaret Booher, and Don Yount. We are proud to say seven boys from our class play on the basketball team, three of which are on the first ten, 'Doc' Surface, Darrell Hockersmith, and jim McCammack. The last of january the class held a party at the school gym. The committees were: Food: jane Gardener, Margaret Booher, and Dick McCammack. Entertainment, 'Doc' Surface and Gylith Britton. The party started with a 'bang' at 8:00 o'clock. Games were enjoyed by all until 9:30, when the committee brought out the food and as sugar draws flies, food draws a certain person from the furnace room. How about it, Elmer? At 10:00 o'clock Mr. Douglas 'blew out the lamps' and the party was over. We try to think that maybe some day we will all be musicans, artists, or prosperous farmers, and Ruby Bymaster, Miss Vincents' 'Pet Peeve,' is doomed to become President of the United States, but for now our highest ambition is to be--just 'jolly juniors.' a 1 1 . ,Y . . - , . The officers for the year were: Ailene Swearingen, President, Lois Kessler, Vice President, Velma Demoret, Secretary Treasurer, Mary Early, News Reporter, Margaret Booher, Song Leader, Aline Sowers, Pianist. September is the month for enrolling new members, and our membership increased from 29 to 4-6 girls. The day preced- ing formal initiation, things were in a tumult at school, because the new members were going through the process of initiation. And what a sight they were! When you saw a girl in her dad's long underwear with a print dress over them, fifteen graids in her hair with a different color of ribbon on each, high heeled shoes and ank- lets, no make-up, and carrying all of her books fincluding a bunch for someone else, you couldn't keep from laughing. Then on September 20, the public was invited to attend the candle-light initiation service, which was held in the Christian Church. The Society's colors of yellow and white were dominate in the candles and many baskets of fall flowers. Special music for this service was furnished by Margaret Booher, Gylith Britton, and Mary Early. Those participating in the program, besides the officers and new members, included Mrs. Fortney, Mrs. Allison, Phyllis jacks, Irene Toby, Betty Sowers, Luetna McMahan, Cather- ine Maxwell, Mary Graham, Georgianna Stockdale, Veda jones, and Lois Baker. During October we planned a Halloween Carnival, which was held in the school gym on October 29. Black and orange crepe paper streamers, witches, black cats, pumpkins, and fodder shocks decorated the entrance and the gym. Each girl was on one committee to prepare and decorate a stand, such as, bingo, fish pond, food, hats, and whistles, etc. The Haunted House drew a crowd, as well as Mad- ame Zcmbie, and her fortune telling. Everyone also enjoyed the en- tertainers of Crazy Tune House. Lelia, Lila, Lola, and Lulu were strictly Southern, Ann, the One Man Band, and Mary Bill also drew interest. In November the Society sponsored a short Thanksgiving program in the assembly. ln the fall each member drew a secret Sunshine Pal, and a party and exchange of gifts was planned for one evening before Christmas. However, because of bad weather, it was impossible to have the party, and go caroling, so our gift exchange was held during the day. Bas- kets of fruit and nuts were made and delivered to sick people in New Market. Each girl chose a lady whom she admires, but these Ideal Ladies did not know who their admirer was until a Tea was given in the spring for that purpose. .vv 'ns . It was sponsored by the Sunshine Society, and all members of the high school were invited to attend. The gym was decorated with red and white crepe paper streamers and red hearts. Games, ping pong card playing, and dancing provided the entertainment. vkifrkiirkir Christmas Concert On the evening of December 14, 1945, a Christmas Concert, under the direction of Mrs. Ralph Allison, was presented in the school gymnasium. Those participating included the band, the high school girls' glee club, and the first, second, and sixth grades. Included in the program besides several numbers by the band, was a brass quartet composed of john Olson, Richard Rush, Don Yount, and Royce Armstrongg a clarinet duet by Donna Enoch and Frank Hossg and a saxaphone solo by Jeanne Mullen. A triple trio composed of jane Gardner, Lois Kessler, Margaret Booher, Ruth Webb, Berniece Stewart, Laura Burnside, Jeanne Mullen, Gylith Britton, and Phyllis Jacks, sang two selections. Dressed as if prepared to go to bed, the little girls and boys of the first and second grades held the attention of everyone. They appeared from the back of the gym, and sang several Christmas songs from the stage. The most impressive part of the program came near the close. On the stage was the familiar scene of jesus, Mary, Jo- seph, shepherds, angels, and the Wise men, portrayed by mein- bers of the first and sixth grades. The girls' glee club, dressed in floor-length white robes and carrying lighted candles, entered from the rear of the gym singing carols. They sang two selections with Mary Early and Margaret Booher as soloistsg after which, they led the group in singing carols. 9 'W iH V NW: GI!! 4 ., , s A., . .1 I.
