CLASS PROPHECY Furythrrrg., w rs packed we had sard goodbye to our nfrghbors our brlls were rll prrd md my wrfe and I elrmbed rnto our wrng to fly to New Madrson I was rn the proerss of burldrng a factory whrch would coxer a whole block on forty srxth street I knew the factory would be successful because we could sefuu labor from New Mad rson s populatron of 280 000 shrpprng facrlrtres on rts twelxe rarlways and advertrsrrrg through rts newspapers and radro statrons Thrs was to be our frr st xrsrt to New Madrson rn thrrty years so we were anxrous to see what had taken the place of the frre truck they were so proud of the lrttle one room post offrce on Marn street and the lrttle electrrc shop close by whrch sold old style clocks and radros I heard that many of the small tow ns around New Madrson had become rncorporated as a part of rt and Rrchmond was the home of many of New Vladrson s workers We started on our 2000 mrle trrp and were or er New Madrson wrthrn a few hours We couldnt belrexe the beautrful crty we were now ox er was New Madrson Skyscrap ers sw armed the trty wrth parkrng lots for planes on top of thenr We landed at the nrunrcrpal arrport and radroed a taxr to take us to a nearby hotel for lunch and a lrttle rest 'We were telephoned that our new house would be ready for us rn the mornrng cook and all Wrth nothrng to do that afternoon I asked my wrfe rf she would lrke to see a baseball game at Emrrck Park I told her that New Madrson had jorned the major leagues and was playrng Detrort rn a close pennant race We went to the game and as I sat rn the grandstand I notrced a large prcture parnted close to the scoreboard wrth a few words sayrng Dedrcated to Al Emrrck Whose Prtchrng Made Our Team Famous Throughout The Country The face looked famrlrar to me and I realrzed rt was the same Mr Emrrck I went to school wrth Later I learned that he lrved rn the northern part of New Madrson near the old Greerrxrlle Creek I went to wrsrt hrm after the game and we had a happy reunron I asked hrm rf he knew where any of our classmates were and he sard he drdn t srnce he tray eled so much wrth the team He drd tell me though that a statue of one of my frrends was placed at the gateway of a racetrack on srxteenth street We made thrs trrp and at the gates stood a statue of a man on a motorcycle The words around the toundatrorr read Donald Ross Natronal Lhampron Motorfytlrst Yes rt was the same Don Ross who had that old one cylrnder motorcycle rn hrgh school Tht next mornrng we mor ed rnto our new house After breakfast I went to my rral estate dealer and settled the deed for the locatron of nrx future fac tory I asked hrm rf he knew a good contractor rn town He recommended the F G Grrle Co just frxe blocks down the street I took hrs adxrfe and went to see Mr Grrle As I entered the burldrrrg a man approached me and I told hrm I wanted to see Mr Grrle He rang hrs boss on the thrrd floor and then told me I could see hrm rn an hour NVhrle wartrng I asked the man rf Mr Grrle w as honest and relrable He told me that he started to school wrth hrm back rn 1936 and knew hrm to be honest rn all of hrs dealrngs wrth hrm I w rs currous to know hrs name srnce I started to school rn 1936 also He sard hrs name was Kerth Mrller and he was employed as Mr Grrle s prrx ate secretary I later had my talk wrth 'VIr Grrle who was none other than my old classmate bane We settled down to brrsrness and he agreed to send tw tnty cor tractors as soon as I had a dragr rm of my frctory drawn He told me of a good archrtect on the other srde of town whom I went to ste after lunch 1 141111 I 1 Q ji? r...Y 4 'ml I v 1 v J' 'Q 5' f X ' v x r 1 x ' Q 'T 'h Y L' ' i z 1 , 2 K ' ' , .
