The Whaler baseball team had an outstanding year compil- ing an overall record of 18-6 and advancing to the State Class M finals for the third time since 1978. In the ECC the diamondmen finished second with a 9-3 record and in the 3rd Annual Whaler Festival the Whalers placed first. Capt. Mark Penafler led the team as the pitcher and infield- er and was named to the ECC All-Star team along with catcher Bob Russell and pitcher-outfielder Brian Mercado. Penaflor was also named to the Class M All-State Team while Russell was selected to play in the National Sports Festival on the East squad which was held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Again, as in previous years, aggressive play and execution played key roles in the Whaler's success. The squad stole 81 bases during the regular season and outscored their oppo- nents by a total of 77 runs. Ten homeruns were hit during the season with Mercado leading the way with four. Mercado also led the team in runs batted in with 26 while Russell knocked in 22. In pitching Penaflor compiled a 6-2 record: Dave Hartling was 3-1, Mercado 4-1, and Mike Santangelo, 5-1. Overall the mound corps had an earned run average of 2.54. In the Class M State Tournament the Whalers opened with a 6-3 decision over Morgan with Penaflor taking the mound win and Russell driving in two runs with a booming triple. Sheehan High School was the next opponent and the team made short work of them with a 19-1 victory behind the four- hit pitching of Mercado. Russell and Mercado combined for 11 runs-batted-in. On to the semi-finals where Penaflor won the decision and the Whalers eked out a 2-1 victory over Tolland with Hector Aquino turning a key double-play to insure the victory and Bob Nenna's sacrifice fly plating the winning run. Once again it was New London vs St. Joseph's in the finals, a repeat of 1979. St. Joe's got oft to a fast start and never looked back as they took a 13-3 win. The progrm was awarded another accolade when Coach Varjas was named Baseball Coach of the Year by the Conn. High School Coached Association. Coach Varjas is optimistic about 1986. They earned honors as ECC runners up with an 8-4 league record. This strong season was capped by a berth in the CIAC tournament. The Whalers won the first two games easily, but were defeated 5-2 by Lewis Mills High School in their third contest. As usual, strong pitching and outstanding defense kept the Whalers in many games. The pitching corps were led by Andrea Marcille and Gwen Smolenski. The infield was manned by Debbie Klinfelter at shortstop, Melissa Sher- man at third base, Kelly McGrath at first base, and Mi- chelle Hammel and Dzung Nguyen who shared duties at second base. Cindy Gaudenzi anchored the outfield along with Kathy Keete, Karen Dineen, Jennifer Whittingstall, Gwen Smolenski, and Andrea Marcille. Kim Keefe handled the catching duties. Although defense kept the Whalers in many games, lack of timely hitting in key situations caused the team to be defeated in several close contests.
