Each school must have a sturdy backbone to keep it from 'ifallingv and losing perspectiveg that backbone is the Board of Education. The Board has the duty of making sure that the school is doing its job as far as proper education of the children enrolled is concerned. The Board has the right to hire, fire, expell, admit, get new curriculum or discard the old, and most anything else that perf tains to the education and good of the students. New London's Board of Education has five elected members, a clerk, and the superintendent of New London schools. These people meet at least once a month, and at times more often, to attend to their many items of business. The Board prides itself on cofoperating with and working for the general good of the students in the school, and they might well be proud. Copy Editors were Judi Finkel, Darlaine Cooke, and Ginny Reclies. The advisors were Mrs. Woodworth and Mr. Myers. The WILDCAT went to press on May 6, not quite early enough to be presented to the student body before the last day of school. The staff and their able advisors spent many evenings working into the wee hours, however, every hour was enjoyed by all. It is our sincere desire that next year's WILDCAT staff get started at the beginning of the year and produce an even bigger and better yearbook. Each year New London sends its outstanding scholastic students to Heidelburg College for the District Scholarship Tests. The students who go are those who have ranked highest in the tests taken locally. This is the second year that New London has sent two participants in each subject. The students have done a good job of representing New London in the past and carried on the good work this year. Sponsored by Ec1stman's Funeral Home uiz Bee r, V W ff: f.. The activities for the 19584959 year included studentfteaching for various elementary and high school teachers, attending a state-wide meeting at Bowling Green University to discover the merits of each field of teaching, and also attending a ciountyfwide meeting in Norwalk to meet fellow F.T.A. members and learn how different groups are organized. The F.T.A. also selected a needy family at Christmas, and presented the family with food and toys. At each meeting, a teacher spoke on college life and the trials and tribulations of teaching. New Lonclon's FFA Chapter has been most active this year and certainly has lived up to his title of Future Farmers. The boys started last fall by planting wheat 'on their FFA farm west of town. They also worked many hours this spring on their farm with each boy contributing as much of his time and his tools for fathefsj as possible. The Chapter had eleven freshmen boys join but will lose six very capable senior boys. The seniors leaving to pursue their vocations in agriculture are Ronnie Baker, Alfred Coy, Don jackson, jim Mitchell, Dick Smith, and Bill Spencer. Among the activities carried on by the FFA boys were: the annual pest hunt, Parliamentary Procedure Contest fin which a silver placing was re- ceiveclj, the ParentfSon Banquet, and participation in State Judging Contests. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Gilman Baker, the new vocational agrif culture teacher, the boys have put forth much effort to live up to their FFA motto. Twenty-eight Librarians SENIOR LIBRARIANS Judi Finkel JUNIOR LIBRARIAN S The Public Library and the school are closely coordinated because as yet the High School has no library and therefore must use the facilities of the public library. Each vear a group of high school students are chosen to be trained in the library undei the supervision and guidance of Mrs. French, the Head Librarian. For the past few years the number of student librarians has been four, but this year it is being increased to five because of the large circulation of the library. On the average the library has close to 200 books going out per day, thus the need for extra help. The student trainees are given a Full year of training and preparation, and then permitted to Work in the library for another year for pay as well as experience. The older girls also help the trainees during their training by teaching each one a certain phase of the library work. The Senior librarians were: Judi Finkel, Beverly Frank, Susan Reid, and Rosemary Wilson. The Junior librarians were: Linda Garrett, Kathy King, Karen Staples, and Lois Winfield. The librarians. are chosen on the basis of their English grades, other scholastic records, capability, and responsibility by the teachers and Mrs. French. The new librarians are chosen the second semester of their sophomore year. Five schools participated, North Fairfield, Greenwich, Monroeville, Westerii Ref serve, and New London. These schools combined to sing seven numf bers led by Mr. Harold Kauffman of Sandusky. The Lakeland Conference Concert was held in New London this year. The four schools participating in this event were: Amherst, Margaretta, Vermilion, and New London. Each school sang four songs and then combined to sing five songs with each director leading a number. The next event was the Spring Concert on May 15. To keep the team pepped up and the spectators cheering was the job of our Varsity Cheerleaders. This year's Varsity Cheerleaders, Ariane Barnes, Darlaine Cooke, Sue Shanefelter, and Teddi Towstiak were all seniors. The year was marked with events such as the Cheerleading Clinic at Canton, in November, and of course their big night of contest at the tournament games. They cheered through the cold of the football games and through the warmth of the basketball games, loving every minute of it. Miss Hartford, their advisor, carefully watched and worked with them all year. We certainly appreciate all the nights she stayed with them after school, to make them the good cheerleaders they were. Everyone was especially proud of the student participation this year at the pep rallies and at the games. We know the boys appreciated it. They have been a pride to our school and we hope that next year's cheer- leaders carry on the same good job they did. The girls, after having such a wonderful time cheering, were very sad to leave, but they willed their megaphones to next year's cheerleaders to carry on the tradition. Sponsored by D. B. The place-New York City. I'm a newspaper reporter. My name is Scoop Laborie. It was 8:30 in the morning. A call from the chief directed me to the city desk. My assign' ment-H big One. +1 l- had just won the Pulitzer prize. My job-to get the human interest story behind the headlines. The chief told me to work fastg we didn't have much time to get the scoop. I looked Over w - 's file. All it contained was an old school annual. The information here was pretty slim but I got one lead-had graduated from New London High School in 1959. The wheels started to turn-why not interview his classmates-really get the lowdown. Looked over the list. Saw several names I recognized-why not start there? Went up to the roof. Took a helicopter to the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. Went to the office of the president, EUGENE BARRETT HAUSER. Walked into his outer office where I was greeted by a luscious, red-headed secretary. Introduced myself and tried to make some headway. Found her name to be SUE SHANEFELTER. What a break! She was also one of the graduates. Decided to skip Eugene Barrett and start right here. Plans were interrupted, however, by sudden opening of the inner office door and the appearance of Eugene Barrett holding a solid gold, diamond studded dumbfbell. He told me his favorite recreation was lifting weights. Got my second big lead. The class of '59 was holding a reunion at New London High School that very night. Took my jet to New London. It was a big city-100,000 people. There was a new high school and grade school, too-both huge. After touring the city, went to the N.I..I-I.S. Auditorium. It was now 7:00 p.m. Time was running out fast. As I was opening the door, I noticed a saying inscribed on it, The Door to Success Is Labeled Push. Told myself I'd find what that meant. First person I met was a wellfknown congresswoman from Ohio, JUDITH FINKEL, who had gained much recognition with her bill to abolish federal farm controls, and was now sponf soring a bill to set free all the dogs in the dog pounds. -ludi's secretary, a petite, shapely brunette named DONNA THOMAS, had accompanied herg she was also a member of that illustrious class of '59. My attention was then drawn to a tall, slim, very tan man. He must see a lot of sun, I thought. Learned his name was DAN RINGLER, an electrical engineer in South America. He had just invented a frictionless electric generator which never stopped running. He was in deep con' versation with a really beautiful, terrific blond, also deeply tanned. Knew her right away-my idol-ARIANE BARNES-the famous actress-a recent winner of an Oscar for portraying a honking maid. Said she received her experience from acting in N.L.H.S. plays. As I was watching them, a woman with brown hair and glasses walked by. She was dressed in the uniform of a doctorg saw her name inscribed on her little black bag-VIRGINIA REDIES, M.D.-New York. Now 1 remembered her. I had read in the paper that she was at present working on a pill that would increase the life span to 200 years. Another brownette accompanied her. I reasoned it was her nurse, BEVERLY FRANK. That nurse was a busy woman. After work, she sang soprano in the Metropolitan Opera. Another nurse greeted them+ELOISE UPTON-now head nurse at New London Hospital. MARILYN PARAMORE is one of the nurses' aides in the same hospital. Then several teachers walked in together. I first noticed an attractive blonde. Name- BARBARA BLAKE. She was universally wellfknown and liked because she had recently developed a method of cooking and eating that used no dishes. I then spotted a real beauty, SANDY SUTHERLAND, now famous in the world of music-a teacher at the Iulliard School of Music in New York. At night, she plays first clarinet in Lawrence Welk's band on televisiong sometimes even gives solo clarinet concerts of her own. Another teacher in the group was slim, trim and lithe. I learned her name was SANDY TIDSWELL, a physical education teacher in Hollywood, California. Two years ago she represented America in the Davis Cup tennis matches. We won that year, too. The only man teacher, JIM MITCHELL, was tall, strong, and handsome. Found that he teaches proper irrigation systems to the FFA boys in Arizona. Arizona is now leading the world in sale of agricultural exports. Next, a small woman with a kingfsized smile caught my eye. To look at her, one wouldn't Sponsored by the New London Record and Miller Bros. Grocery Store believe that she, FLOREECE LEEDY, is one of the toughest and best government teachers in the state of Maine. The two other teachers both taught in the same school in Miami Beach, Florida, and are the best of friends. Names-SUSAN REID and ROSEMARY WILSON. Both are physics teachers and each has her own lab in which to experiment. They have recently discovered a new rocket fuel, which is a mixture of ether and peroxide. I then saw some farmers who were congratulating JUDI FINKEL on her work. One, DON JACKSON, the owner of a 2,000 acre farm right near New London, recently struck it rich discovering a new fertilizer which will make apples grow to the size of watermelons. His apples are now very much in demand. Another, RONNIE BAKER, is the owner of a large dairy farm in Wisconsin. Vwfhen not running his farm, he plays basketball and recently became one of the shortest AllfAmericans ever. DICK SMITH has a wheat farm in Alaska. He perfected a giant heater which has melted all the snow there and made the land good for farming. The remaining farmer I learned was BILL SPENCER. He owns a fruit farm right next to Don's and they have considered forming a partnership, thus having a monopoly on giant apples. Just then two very handsome men came walking in the door. They looked very distinguished and were wearing the latest haircut. Soon got the info that they were barbers. Their names- ALFRED COY and MIKE POWERS. They owned the largest barber shop in the world and, of course, lived in Paris, the center of fashion. Right then, after them, came a very attractive woman named DARLAINE COOKE whom everyone seemed to know at once from her warm, friendly smile. She was a dental hygienist in the office if a famous dentist, and although married to a prominent businessman, she and the dentist, after intensive research, had patented a toothpaste which completely prevents cavities. She is now a retired millionaire. Then I heard the voice of a man complaining about the heat. They told me that he was LEROY STOBER, an accountant who lived at the North Pole. He hadn't seen a summer for ten years so no wonder it seemed hot to him. Suddenly everyone's eyes turned to the door and I saw a small but importantflooking man walk in. It was JOHN WALEK, the architect who had designed the new White House. The YVhite House is now very spacefsaving as it is 5 feet square and Z0 miles high. Accompanying him came two engineers, JOHN MEYERS and ISHMAEL SPEARS, with their secretaries, MARY ANNE BEST and FLORENCE CUCCO. They were partners and had an engineering company in Michigan. Then I noticed two girls whom I hadn't seen before. Wonder how I ever missed 'em. Wow! They are the final contenders in the Mrs. America Contest-MARLENE BURROWS and SANDY MURR. Both are married, have families, and are considered perfect homemakers. Some other happily married mothers with families are NANCY HAMILTON, the wife of a famous baseball player: JEANNETTE SKALA, who married a farmerg DOROTHY CIPHERSg ERNESTINE CASE3 and CAROL MURRAY, who's a nurse on the side. Saw next BOB ROERIG, the author of a bestfselling book about his travels throughout the world. When he isn't writing, Bob is a draftsman and a tool and die maker. Two candidates going up on the next spaceship to Mars are RALPH SCYOC and DARRYL FARMER. Both are Air Force men and wellfknown for their bravery and endurance. The next object of my attention was a '7'foot man named TERRY WARD. He is a successful engineer in London, England, and although he used to play basketball, he was barred from the game when he grew to be taller than the basket. His secretary is SHIRLEY STILES4 Together they look like Mutt and Jeff for she is as short as he is tall. Right at the moment there was a great stir throughout the auditorium. In walked a good' looking woman who's a social worker in Texas. TEDDI TOWSTIAK advises all the oil barons what to do with their money so they will be happy. She is growing to be one of the richest women in America.. Then went over to talk to EDDIE SHAVER, a carpenter in New London. He and JOHN WALEK are talking about teaming up. John designs 'emg Eddie builds 'em. Still hadn't seen my main object 4 -A--. But had learned the vital facts about him from his classmates and also a lot about them. What a class! Everybody has turned out well. I remembered that saying on the door. It must be their class motto. Each of them had sure lived it. Walked out. Decided I'd adopt a new motto+THE DOOR TO SUCCESS IS LABELED PUSH.
