But hark, I heal' the footing o I EN EL HI E unnnulnllnlInnuunnnunlnulll E Histor of Class of '23 lil UST twelve short years ago, we. the class ot' '23, started upon our school career. The class at that time was large and happy, but of that original group only a few remain. This number includes: Laylin Bliss, Frances Fuller. Harvey Hall, Donald Kirkton, Paul Messenger, Lawrence O'Hara. Ivy Smith, Byron VVhite and Philip VVhite. Ten of our present class joined us as Freshmen, one as a Sophomore, live as Juniors. one as a Senior and two from the class of '22 remained in school to graduate with us. Early in the fall of '19 we held our first class meeting. Harvey Hall was elected President, Donald Barrett. Vice- President, lda Harrod, Secretary, Gerald Ensley, Treasurer. The members of the faculty that year were: Burnworth. Flowers. Johnson, Paxton, Shidaker, and Sprague. During the year a weiner roast was held at the rural home of Leah Perkins, and a party in the basement of the Congregational Church. After the party all were taken to their various homes on a bob-sled. XVe were all glad when the school year ended, however, so that we could rid ourselves of the hateful name of green little Freshiesf' The following year another class meeting was held to elect a new Treasurer, the oliice hcing left vacant by the moving away of Gerald ltlnsley. Ruth Russell was chosen EN EL HI to take his place. The teachers for the year were: Burnworth, Gordon. Johnson, Long, Paxton, and Sprague. The only party during our Sophomore year was held at the hoine of Leroy Roorback. No other events of nn- portance happened during the year and it closed with :L picnic at Crystal Beach. The fall of '21 found us taking up our work as Juniors. To the faculty that year were added: Keay, Johnson, Morris and Gillogly, these taking the places of Johnson, Gordon, Long and Sprague. This was the year of work, being made thus by the presence of lNIorris and Keay. The reception that we gave in honor of the Seniors proved to be the largest and best of its kind. VVe ended the year by a picnic at Ruggles Beach. After a lnueh enjoyed vacation, we came back to the old school building for the last year. The presence of Barnes and Hatch in our faculty group, in the places of Gillogly and Keay, inade us feel that the nalne of Senior iinplies. Chew- ing guln and whispering was absolutely forbidden in Mr. Hatch's class. Our failing of being late was also stopped. And now our last year is at an end. VVe close this class history by saying that this graduating class of '23 consists of thirty-one lll6lNlJCl'SQ fifteen boys and sixteen girls. The mem- bers were twenty-eight in number. Our faculty that year were: Mr. Burnworth, Miss Paxton, Miss Gordon. bliss Sprague. Miss Long and Mr. Johnson. Many from the adjoining townships came that year to fill our ranks. They were VVinifred Upton, Marjorie Cole, Bessie Day. Ruth Day. Frances Sellars, ltlarian Coon, Ruby Beers, Hlarybelle Hubba1'd,John Jewett, Joseph Atkinson, Thomas Sellars, Dick Shipman, Owen Thomas, Vtfeldon Vtlilliams. Early in the fall we held a class meeting, electing as our class otlicers. Murray lNIcC'aleb. Presidentg Alvin f'asto. Vice Presidentg and Elizabeth Robinson, Secretary and 'l'reasurer. Our first party. a inarslnnallow roast, was held at the home of liliza- beth Robinson. Other parties during the year were held at the homes of Marybelle Hubbard, Frances Sellars. Grace Dawson. and Vtlinifred Upton. YVhen we entered our Sophomore year, one new member, Harold Cole, had joined us, and two had left our ranks to enter another school. During the year one of our number, Marjorie Colemwas summoned to the other world. She was one of our best loved companions, spreading a gleam of sunshine wherever she went. with a kind word for every one. and her death was greatly mourned by all. Our faculty that year were: Mr. Burnworth, Mr. Keay. Miss Morris, Miss Gillogly, Miss Johnson and Miss Paxton. Our class was well repre- sented in all school activities. Parties during the year were held at the homes of lithelyn Jenny, Mur- ray McCaleb. Grace Dawson and Frances Sellars. Robert Swanger also entertained the Freshmen and Sophomore Classes with a dance. A few days after school was out, a lf'reshman-So-phoinore class picnic was held at Crystal Beach. The majority of the class reported a good time. Our class this year has a total of twenty-tive members. one Owen Thomas. having left our class, and two having been added to our list, lrene Marrett and .lack Richards. Sophomore Class History ti N the year of' 1921, twenty-seven boys and girls entered the assembly room of the N. L. H. S. These pupils were classed as Fresh- men. After eight years of grammar school, and then to arrive before these INTELLECTUAL people, so full of pep that they tried to frighten the poor Freshmen. Indeed, the Freshmen were so superior in brilliance, that they rather dreaded having to spend four years with such uudignified I persons. During this year. Mr. Keay. our principal, asked what the opposite chemical substance of salt was. ' One of our brilliant pupils answered pep- per. All of these things go to prove that the Freshmen 1-lass was the smartest ever. Our first class was--linglish. VVe did not know whether we would care for this or not, but decided, after considering our teacher. that we would eondescend to like the subject a little. The first class meeting was of great importance, as we elected our ofiicers. After voting we elected .lack Richards as president. Don Seiler as vice-president, Ruth Palmer as secretary. and Robert Richards as treasurer. VVith these people as ofiicers we soon had our first party at Glorene Coleman's. The Freshman year soon passed, and we gathered into the assembly room. not as Freshmen, but as Sophomores. Now we were classed as lN- THLLICICNT CFD persons. This year began again with the linglish class, and we learned to care for the subject. There were still twentyeseven in this class. Although one person had moved away. another had taken her place. liven Don Seiler was beginning to be distinguished, for new his aim had improved so that he was able to knock a Hy ofi' from Kenneth Jacoby's ear without hurting him. Our first Sophomore party was at Dick C'arvey's, and everyone had a wonderful time. And now this class of twenty-seven is aspiring to become dignified Juniors-at last! MARIAN S. VVHITH. L-ouch. l EN EL HI 3, E unnn -lumnuunnununmnnmnunummnnn nnuuu E later Ashland's second team visited New London. The game was uninter- esting and badly played although New London beat Ashland 12 to 0. On October 21st, New London played Vermilion winning over them 18 to 0. The outstanding game of the season was played with VVellington No- vember 4+th. It had been customary for VVellingon to beat New London each year. The last two years the score was 87 and 97 to 0 in favor of VVelling- ton. This year they had again planned on winning and had said that they would win with a score of 100 to 0. This game was witnessed by more people than any other game of the season, there being between three hundred and Hfty and four hundred people on the side lines, nearly one hundred of these being from VVellington. VVellington High was surprised when it gained only twelve points in the Hrst half and seven in the last half. They tried ever so hard to run up a high score by using all the plays they had. New London High could not score in the first three quarters, but in the last quarter they scored two touch defwns, and failed to kick goal either time. This ended the hard fought game with a score of 19 to 12. Due to a perhaps unintentional accident. Alvin Casto, our regular quar-. ter back was disabled in the early part of the game by a broken ankle. This was a great loss to the team in this game for Byron VVhite. regular end, had to take Casey's place, and we lost a good end and a good quarter back by the same accident. Needless to say, Alvin's good work as a quarter backs, was greatly missed during the rest of the season. The game was well played by both teams. New London showed what she could do if she had to. The people of YVellington said that New Lon- don had the best coached team of any they had played this year. The squad celebrated Armistice Day by bringing home a defeat of 56 to 0 from Shelby. lfVe felt better after November 25th when wc. in turn, defeated Greenwich 38 to 6. The football season closed November 30th with the Alumni game which resulted in a victory for the High School with a score of 144 to 0. Much credit must be given Coach Hogsett.. for the achievements of the New London team this year. A member of the All American, in 1912. Hogsett. has real football experience. He was liked by all mem- bers of the squad and they were eager to work for him. Hogsett had good support and cooperation from beth the school and the business men of New London. and was enabled to put a team on the field, of which the school had a reason to feel proud. The football squad had to work for support from the business people of the town. as the school has no Athletic Association. Through the kind- ness of our public-spirited men and women of the town, enough money was obtained to furnish each member of the gridiron with a complete outfit of the finest quality We believe the season just ended is the beginning of a new era of football for New London, and we hope that the record of our team in the coming years may more than justify our prediction that the New London High School will be a foe to be both respected and feared throughout North f'entral Ohio. Ruth Smith and Byron VVhite, chaperoned by Phil VVhite, stepped for the ocean steamer, Maid of the Mist, to make a six months tour of picturesque Europe. VVhile they were traveling over the vast wilds of Italy, they came upon Carl Graham, who was pursuing the wild European mice. Carl hinted ve1'y mysteriously of the strange discovery that he recently made. After some persuasion he consented to guide them to the old cave of the Sybil, which he had accidently come upon the week before. Carl introduced the group to the twentieth century Sybil, Dorothy Smith. After astonished and affectionate greetings were exchanged, she obligingly went into a trance and told them the news of their absent classmates. After a few moments hesitation Sybil told them of Leroy Roorback, who serves as a minister in Kamchatiia. Dorothy Shipman is very contented to be teaching little hopefuls of Kamchatka. Following the information that Sybil told us of Harvey Hall as a member of the Four Hundred in the city of New York. In this same city Thelma Arthur is a very ac- complished movie actress who rivals ever her predecessor. Theda Bara. In a different section of the city Ruth Russeil is a model in a wholesale millinery shop. llpon talking about Ruth Russell, naturally the subject of Paul lN1essenger's destination in life would arise. lVe iind that he is tripping over the desert sands of South Africa in search of diamonds. VVe run across a large poster stating the important event of the season which was to take place in the Town Hall ot' the city of Fitchville. The incident was the debut of Leah Per- kins as a classic dancer. She had worked for this event for the previous fifteen years. Our dear old friend, IIarvey Lyon, after hearing of the wonderful entertaimnent to be held in Fitchville, decided to honor Leah by his presence. VVhile traveling from Cleve- land to Fitchville on the train, he met the porter, Laylin Bliss. Laylin says he is very well contented, because he likes to travel and see the beautiful scenery. PIarvey told the public while in Fitehville, ot' the new Chief' of Police of' Cleveland. The Chief' is a great success. Her name is Ivy Smith. As Sybil disclosed this information to the g'roup of highly excited classmates, the newlyweds, Floyd Sutfin and Dora Scott, and .Iim Smith and Dorothy Fowdon burst into the cave and their noisy exclamations awoke Sybil or Dorothy from her transe. 'l'O NICW LONDON EN EL HI 3: A Plea for Better Athletics ANY centuries have come and gone since the Grecian bards sang of mighty deeds and warriors, or rendered immortal in song and verse the athletic prowess of a Hercules, but in that dim and shadowy past there was created in the emotions of men a love of sports. a passionate admiration for one, who could accomplish something that his fellows could not do. one whose mental and physical ability made him conspicuous wherever he went. He was a hero. a super-man. the plaudits of the gods were his, to him was awarded the laurel wreathg the fruits of victory were laid in his hands. The world has changed greatly since the time of which we have just spoken, but people are much the same today as yesterday, yes. even as the-y were in that mythical age when Hercules. taking pity upon the miserable Atlas. relieved him of his burden and supported the earth on his own broad shoulders. We still admire a hero. VVe can still summon a tremendous amount of enthusiasm over the breaking of a worldis record. or the accomplishment of some impossible physical feat. VVhat has been the result? Our modern system of athletics. Vvidcly different from those previously mentioned in this article. but more in keep- ing with the needs and spirit of the times. We have no desire to inspire in the minds of our boys and girls any particular admiration for those athletics of the past. nor yet to foster on their part filly emulation of those ancient heroes. but we do believe it to be the duty of every red-blooded man and woman to stimulate a love for clean. wholesome athletics. to inspire in the minds of our young people an intense desire and determination to excel in some branch of outdoor sport. limerson said in one of his essays. You send your boy to the schoolniaster. but it is the school boys' who edulcate him. There is more truth in the statement than we are sometimes ready to acknowledge, It is natural for a child to play. and in later years when he has become a citizen of the com- munity often it is the events of the school playgrounds that stand out vividly in his remembrance. and the training. the impressions that he received from his schoolmates often outweighed and overshadowed that which he gleaned from his books. The play ground is the living school of Americanization. Here under the right kind of leadership are learned the lesson of fair play. the respect for rules. ability to meet defeat in a gentlemanly and sportsman-like manner. cooperation recognition of leadership. and the true ideals of sportmanship. These never have and never will be learned in the schoolroom. They can only to be learned on the play ground. and we firmly believe that upon the recognition of these ideals. and their inculcation in the minds of our boys and girls, rest largely the future of America. especially her industrial life. Let us then plead in behalf of the New London Public Schools. an even deeper interest on the part of the people of the Community. You are spcnding thousands of dollars annually to prepare these young people for future citizenship. lt is also your duty to sec that their physical ability is developed as well as their mcntal ability. and in no better wav can this be accomplished than by a well-developed. well-regulated course .in clean out- door sports. , . This school has now come to occupy a great place in training young men and women for business and oiiice positions and for teaching commercial branches in high school and business colleges. It has now' the highest stand- ing given to any business college in Ohio, by the state department at Columbus. It was the iirst business college to be placed upon the accredited list of Ohio colleges, in 1915, by which authority it oifers a two year teachers' commercial course which leads to the state cer- tificate. It is said to have more graduates holding certificates than all other similar schools combined. The Oberlin Business College is the school for High School students for it urges all young people to complete a full high school course be- fore entering a business college and as a result, has an older and bet- ter class of students than any other school of its kind. fhis accounts for the great reputation which this school has gained.
