| ACADEMY ECHO Vol. XIX No.4 NEW LONDON ACADEMY Forest, Virginia December, 1950 SENIOR PLAY PROVES OUTSTANDING SUCCESS Mrs. Mundy and the seniors who were wandering around muttering to themselves before December 8, are now fully re- relaxed. The senior play was a big success. The play, “Kay Beats the Band,’’was a very fine comedy which drew many laughs from the audience. The cast included Marian Phillips, Sylvia Carter, Shirley Stevens, Bob Ingham, J. B. Viers, Shirley Coffey, Royal Padgett, Jean Davis, Ava Newman, and Carey Murray. Student directors were Carol White and Phyllis Hunt. BCEA WILL SPONSOR BARTER PLAY JAN. 13 The Bedford County Educa- tion Association, to which the teachers of Bedford belong, will sponsor a play, to be given in the Bedford High School Audi- torium on January 13. The play, entitled “Sun-Up”, will be staged by the Barter Players, Virginia's nationally famous theatrical group. The Barter players, ‘hose productions rival the New York stage, always give an outstanding perform ance. Student tickets are $ .90, and adults $1.20, and reserved seats $1.80. Tickets may be obtained from Mr. de Porry. Ch ustmas is for Christ who lay in the manger Christmas morning. is for the hay in the man- ger for the Christ Child. is for the room made in the barn for the birth of Christ. is for Israel, the land where the Christ Child was born. is for the star in the East that told of Christ's birth. is for the town of Bethle- hem where Christ was born is for Mary, the Mother of the Christ Child. is for the angels who sang, “Christ the Saviour is born” is for the shepherds who followed the star to Christ. Vada Creasy FIGHTING TEAMS LOSE TWO OPENING GAMES New London Academy's boys basketball team began it’s 1950 season when we journeyed to Lynchburg College to meet L.C’s. Junior Varsity. It was a hard fight, but we lost, 58 - 43. The game was highlighted by the brilliant play of forward Rucker Stanley. Though some- what dismayed by an enormous floor, the boys from the country were in the fight most of the way. Center Royal Padgett was the high scorer for us, with 17, while Rucker ‘Stanley got 15, Jimmy Hall 8, Ingham 2, and Earl Lindsay got 1 while play- ing a bang-up floor game and getting a black eye in the bar- gain. The girls basketball team also played it's first game Dec. 12, with Lynchburg College J. V's. The girls had tough luck with their shots, but enjoyed playing the game. We lost by a score of 32 - 2]. Dorothy Newman was high- est scorer with 10 points, and Carolyn Clark next with 6 points. Phyllis Walker and Clar- ice White each scored 2, and Nancy Hall 1. Rorer was high- est for the J. V's. with I 1 points and Layne next with 8. The girls are looking forward to a return game with the J. V's. soon.
