K , t X L-f, J - - ' -' I Alia, PRDPHEOY 47 Ol our trip to Washington, D. O., we saw many wonderful thingsg but the strangest, BBQ the one I shall remember the longest, was a pair of glasses. They Twere not just ordinary glasses. But I am getting ahead of the story. We were supposed to be in our hotel, tucked in our beds by 11:50. That evening time had slipp- putting ed away from me, so I decided to take a short cut back to the hotel. This route took me through a part of the city where there were many eecondphand shops. Painted on one window was a pair of glass- es with the figure 19 on one lense and 5? on the other. Through the glass, I could see an old man his shop in order for the night. Some- how he knew I was standing there, for he looked around and motioned for me to come in. Then he told me about the wonderful glasses. For a small sum I could look through them for five minutes and see the people I wanted to see as they would be in 1957. My instructions were to say the name of the person and concentrate on that persong then the picture would come before me. I saw a ship docked on the west coast. Rear Admiral Charles Luellen was disembarking from his flagship at San I rancisco and was surprised to be greeted by an old classmate from Jimtown, Ted McKillip, who was now the mayor of that great sea- port city. The two men talked over old times and decided to attend the 1957 Rose Bowl football game. Hear - ing that Myron Matney was now the president of the California Passenger Lines, they decided to take his Pasadena Special and was greeted by Myron him- self. He had put on a little weight, but we would have recognized him anywhere. . .. t .sv . 'E Q Q ' K :: 5 f' ,v X . Obtaining seats next to the scoring box, they discovered that the official scorekeeper for UCLA was none other than Dick Beeson. They were informed by Dick that another former classmate was one of the greatest half backs in the United States and wal now playing for UCLA. latching the game in grogp ress, they suddenly saw one of the players plow his way toward the goal for a touchdown. They at once recognized the slow steady shuffle as that of Albert Lee Bennett's. After the game was over ,they asked Dick and Albert Lee to join them in the search for the rest of their classmates of 1947 heard that James Crone was just finishing his greatest love picture at H. G. H. We were glad to hear that he would not start his next picture 'Purple Pajamae', until he had helped us locate the rest of his old classmates. Strolling about Hollywood- trying to get our bearings, we met HSIEH Snow' coming out of the Locker H0061 Studio where she had become the most famous model in the world. We talked of the Hgood old days' and she agreed to take time out and join us in 100k1ng up our remaining classmate, John Chew, who had a large horse ranch in Texas and trained palmenos for roles in the movies. We chartered a plane to Texas and the pilot told us that he had often flown actresses to the Chew ranch for their instructions on how to ride horses. He let us off at Johnn1e's private air- field, and we were greeted by Johnnie in a stage- coach. After talking for some time, he invited us to spend the week-end at his ranch. Suddenly the view faded from the glasses. It was 1947 again and I was SZBDGIDS in a secondhand shop in Washington D. C. The old man informed me that the five minutes were up. I rubbed my eyes, thanked him, and hurried back to the hotel hoping there wouldn't be any teachers on guard duty. QL .. X mg! We were dn our way to lashing- ton, D. O., the juniors, seniors, their sponsors and the coach, together with the Juniors and sen- iors from Btraughn Bhd their sponsors. It was a good Dudley township delegation t1ghtly packed in- to a bus starting up U. S. 40. The first day was one of enjoying the scenery that flashed by, and the first night was spent in the smoky city of Pittsburg. The next day, and for several days to come, Washington was the-cena ter of interest. We stayed at a swank hotel with- in walklng distance of the White House. We toured the Senate Uhamber, the Supreme Oourt Building, the White House, the Treasurery Department, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the new Pentagon Building, and the Smithsonian Institute. Them we took excursion trips outside the city. Surely none will ever'forget the loveliness of Ht. Vernon, the impressivenesl of the battlefield of Gettysburg, the reverence of Arlington, the beauty of the Franciscan Monestary or the pride in our Naval Academy at Annapolis. Ihursday, April 26, we were back again at New Lisbon, Friday ann.back to school, but who would miss it now that we had so much to tell the classes that lflyed at home. These are only the high spots. Each person has his or her own private memory book entitled 'My trip to Washington' which cbntains some of the most engoyable and instructive pages of high school life.
