Dedication Dedication The Class of 1981 would like to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. John Neff. During his forty-two years of teaching. Mr. Neff has devoted countless hours of his time to his students and his community. He was a football coach at New Lex from 1944-1953. After a disasterous 1-5 start, the team pulled together to win 3 of the last four including a 20-7 win over Sheridan. The turn around was a result of players learning the new system under a new coach, learning what Class” is, and learning the price that must be paid to become a good football team. As a result of their efforts, future teams will be one step ahead and therefore have the tools necessary to continue the traditions of New Lex Football. 65 Senior Lettermen Manager Jeff June, Randy Lacey, Chip Ryan, Bill Hatem, Rick Chuvalas, Brian Middaugh, Matt Mooney, Craig Carpenter, Randy Willison, Jim Albanese, George Pappas, Butch Wollenberg, Coach Richard Bowman NL 55 West M. The Commencement and Baccalaureate exercises were held on May 24th In the hot and crowded high school gymnasium. Dr. Cletus Bulach was the guest speaker. Numerous awards and honors were announced. Valedictorian Joyce Jackson and Salutatorian Matt Mooney also gave addresses. Selections were also heard from the high school vocal music groups and the concert band. Mousetrap The first play of the 1980-81 school year was the Agatha Christie classic “Mousetrap, directed by Charles Diezman. Molly and Giles Ralston (Jennifer Chappelear and Steve Murray) have just welcomed their first guests to their new boarding house when they all become snowbound. With the blizzard comes Detective Sgt. Trotter (Rick Rudd) who is on the trail of a murderer. One guest is already dead — who will be next? All of this added up to a tale of intrigue, mystery, and suspense which delighted the N.L.H.S. audiences. Ahh . . . well . . . But Jon, you just don't match Now, let’s get all the facts There is a murderer here among us. Now what? It was horrible . . . The real murderer! 112 Cheaper by the Dozen One big happy family Let’s take it from the top A -.j . I Allow me to introduce myself . . . You like who?!! The winter play, directed by Virgil Seger, was an adapted version of the comedy Cheaper by the Dozen. The adventures of the Gilbreths make for an entertaining and amusing story as Mr. and Mrs. Gilbreth (Rick Rudd and Shayna Billingsly) cope with the problems of raising twelve children. Mr. Gilbreth is an efficiency expert and wants to make his children as self-sufficient as possible. He wants to do this quickly because both he and the audience know that he is dying. Added to this and the usual complications of raising a large family, the three oldest daughters (Annie Rambo, Jennifer Chappelear, and Candy Cinquepalmi) are staging a revolution to earn the right to date boys and (horror of horrors!) wear mini skirts and go-go boots. 113 I like your . . . go-go boots Carnival Get the point my dear? “I am a very nice man.” Love makes the world go round, was the message of N.L.H.S.’s 13th annual spring musical, “Carnival.” It is the story of a young, small-town girl named Lili (Annie Rambo) who comes to live in a second-rate circus. She captures the hearts of all the carnival folks when she joins the puppet act run by Paul (Jon Kochensparger), a cynical and embittered ex-dancer turned puppeteer. She talks to her friends, the puppets, and in the process makes the show a big success. Lili’s heart is captured by the sweet-talking, womanizing magician, Marco (Rick Rudd). Eventually Lili realizes that Marco doesn’t really love her and decides to leave the carnival. The puppets stop her and she discovers that it isn't the puppets that she loves, but Paul. “Tell us more. 114 “Here’s to you baby.” “Everybody likes you . . . ” _Q CO E co Row 1 - Richard Purvis, Chris Bulach, Jon Kochensparger, Erica Diezman, Lisa Ferguson, Kevin Wood, John Rose, Row 2 - Carol Finck, Mary Lee Raso, Jennifer Chappelear, Shayna Bil-lingsly, Sherrie Haley, Kathy Berry, Annie Rambo, Jason Miller, Row 3 - Rhonda Lin-damood, Mark Sidwell, Mark Stickdorn, Steve Murray, David Dickerson, Janet McGonagle, Joe Helwig 115 Cafeteria Workers People Behind Row 1 - Susan Goodfellow, Joyce Waite, Dawn Moore, Rose Franke, Row 2 - Patty Potter, Kelly Miller, Julie Waite, Teresa Conrad, Chris Chute, Julie Harley Cooks Mrs. Wanda Shearer, Mrs. Nancy Shriner, and Mrs. Virginia Christy Library Aids Row 1 - Mrs. Averill, Chris Urban, Teresa Finck, John Allen, Richard Purvis, Lisa Plaisted, Teri Shriner, Jeff Brame, Rick Dumolt, Nancy Stallings, Cindy Folk, Lorene Abram, Mike Hutchinson, Row 2 - Deanna Funk, Deanna Kunkler, Carol Finck, Lisa Hinkle, Deanna Barnes, Sherrie Haley, Aldonna Holman, Hope Renick, Patty Dixon, Lynda Blanchard, Kelly Saxton, Thea Abram, not pictured; Lorie Lacey and Marty Mooney 116 the Scenes Office Workers Row 1 - Kay Smith, Susan Goodfellow, Shelly Stalter, Patty Morose, Lisa Snider, Hope Renick, Row 2 - Trish Wollenberg, Diane Leckrone, Michele Nash, Joe Helwig, Kelly Miller, Janet McGonagle, Row 3 - Kay Wasem, Jon Kochensparger, Vicki Rockwell, Sherri Griffith, Lisa Lyons, Diane Blosser Secretary Aid Mrs. Sigler Janitorial Workers 117 Row 1 - Gary Ault, Steve Hammond, Jeff Shumaker, Paul Kunkler, Ben Weber, Row 2 - Bill Kunkler, Eugene Rutter, Gerald Bolyard, Bobby Miller, Guy Shriner Future Farmers of America Row 1 - Glen Finck, Debbie Smart, Joyce Jackson, Pat Metzger, Lonnie Savage, Row 2 - Brad Shriner, Jody King, Row 3 - Mr. Folk, Mark Boley, Roy Campbell, Mark Snider, Kenny Seals, Gary Stoltz, Mike Ferguson, Mr. Blauser Sr. Pari. The Chapter was represented at all FFA activities which included the Washington Leadership Conference, State and National Conventions, and all contests. At the National Convention, the New Lexington FFA Alumni placed first in the nation for the second year. The 1981 State Convention was one of great honor for the Chapter. Four members received their State Farmer Degrees. Rick Rudd placed third in State Extemporaneous Speaking. Joyce Jackson was recognized for being first in the graduating class and several members placed high with their Proficiency Applications. The highlight of the Convention was when Rick Rudd was elected to the State Office of Treasurer. Although 1981 was a great year, we know that 1982 will be better than ever. The success of each member was due to years of hard work and the patience and support of friends, parents, and advisors Mr. Folk and Mr. Blauser. 121 Jr. State Farmers Proficiency Foreign Exchange Students New Lexington High School had the privilege of having 3 foreign exchange students during the 1980-81 school year. Kana Terui, visiting from Japan, stayed with the Richard McGonagle family. She was a member of the high school singers and was also nominated for homecoming queen. Ricardo Fleitas-Moreno stayed with the David Sidwell family during his visit from Paraguay. Ricardo was also a member of the singers and he was a member of the school tennis team. Ceres da Silva stayed with the Harold Kunkler family during her visit from Brazil. She too was a member of the high school singers. The three took a YFU (Youth For Understanding) trip to Washington, D.C. to visit our nation's capital before leaving for home. On behalf of the faculty and students at New Lex, we would like to wish them the best of luck and hope they never forget all of their friends at New Lexington High School.
