The group also sold Christmas wrapping paper for our contribution to the prom. Junior year the class sold magazines to raise money for the prom. The theme for the prom was the Long and Winding Road , which was very successful. The year we were all waiting for finally came. As seniors, we selected our new class motto which was To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe. Some members of the class got together and bought Little Genny shirts and our Senior T-Shirts. The class sold M M's to raise money to start two new traditions: The girls to carry class flower at graduation and the Senior Banquet. The class voted on prophecies and wrote their last will and testament. As entertainment, the class went to King's Island Amusement Park as an ending to our high school days. 16 SENIORS Class of 1980 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President Debbie Hillis Vice President Scott Stalter Secretary April Hammer Treasurer Mary Able SENIORS 17 Look at that form! There are 196 students in this class. The Sophomores started the year off by ordering their class rings from Jostens. This was their first big step towards becoming a true part of the Senior High. The main fund raising project for the Sophomore Class was the selling of Christmas and All Occasion wrapping paper. This project was a big success and the money will be put towards next years' prom. For Spirit Week the Sophomore Class took great pride in sponsoring their own dress up day to show their spirit. They chose to have Crazy Hat, Sock and Lollipop day. They also had the back hall of the school to decorate any way they wanted and they done a great job. They also received a special ribbon in the talent contest. After many long hours of practice, both squads showed outstanding performance in both the football and basketball seasons. They boosted the teams in many ways other than cheering. Making signs, cookies, and the spot-lighted pep rallys succeeded in successful seasons. SPIRIT!! Then came the game that was to tell everything - New Lex Maysville. The tension was high and the boys played hard, but there always has to be a loser and we were defeated. The Maysville game lowered their spirits some, but not for long. The boys New Lex SCORES Opponent bounced right back and on Oct. 19th we 14 Logan 6 defeated Sheridan. Sheridan was the most 19 West M. 12 important game of the year to them, especially 14 Maysville 33 since Sheridan sent the four captains and all 14 Riverview 41 the coaches letters concerning the game. They 0 John Glenn 21 also made cardboard tomb stones and placed 7 Tri-Valley 27 them on the porches of the Captains and 12 Philo 10 Coaches. They soon came out of that and played together very well. Their record was 10-11, but every game they lost was very close. These boys gave everything they had, the best example of this was when they played Tri-Valley for the second time. During the first half of that game, the team played the best they played all season. Of course you can't talk about the team without telling about the second game they had with Sheridan. This game was probably the most exciting one of the year. New Lex won 52-51. 70 BASKETBALL Basketball Row 1 - Matt Able, David Bush, Randy Willison, Richard Miller, Chip Ryan. Mariella Rodriguez Foreign Exchange Student From Peru May 6, 1980 Dear Seniors from New Lex High School, I wanted all of you to hear from one before you are out of school, so I decided to write this letter. I am doing pretty good during these days. I passed my University entrance exam in March. I am so happy. My classes will start next month. I have lived in Lima (capital of Peru) for almost three months. I like Lima. It's a very big city. Also I want you to know that I always remember all of you. Well, in this letter I would like to tell you many things, but I don't know how. It is not easy to say many things in a language that is not mine, so I just tell you four things: 1) I wish all of you a very happy graduation. (Don't be sad, please. Don't cry). 2) I wish all of you good luck with everything in the future. 3) That third one is so great to me, but maybe not for you. Anyway I will tell you: I wish all of you go to the University to get a profession. Going to the University is always very important. I think University degrees help to get better jobs and make us really proud of ourselves, so if you have a chance, go the the University, please. 4) That is the last one: To some of you have an opportunity to come to Peru someday, don't forget to look for me. I would be so glad to see at least one of you. National Honor Society National Honor Society Induction took place February 27, 1980. The induction ceremony, performed by active members, went very smoothly. The program began with a selection by the singers and one by the stage band. M.C. Mike Gillette introduced the officers, each of whom read a quality which enables one to become a member of National Honor Society. This year's inductees were called from their seats, signed the roster, and took the National Honor Society oath. Dr. Cletus Bulach gave a heart warming speech on the social equality of apes. Inflation thrived throughout the country leaving the country unemployment rate at very high percentages. Gold prices soared to the rate of $800 an ounce. This event crossed the nation and the world. Along with the surge of nationalism, the under-rated U.S. Olympic Hockey Team rose to defeat the favored Russian team and on the capture the gold metal. The winter Olympic Games were held in Lake Placid, New York. 1980 was the year the Summer Olympic Games took place — but not for the U.S. Due to the Soviet invasion of Afganistan, the United States government decided to boycott the Summer Games held in Moscow. No one around for company, And so I turn to memories to pass the time away. Each face that flashes back to mind, Seems as it was untouched by time. I can't recall quite all the names, Each one is precious all the same. How strange to think, How many friends were lost somewhere behind. Where are they now? How I miss those companions. Who walked the canyons of the night, By my side. Where are they now? Like so many crazy dancers, We live only for the answers in a song. But that was long ago, Where are they now?
