DIANE MATTIS: TOM PADGETT: 40 As the doors opened admitting students for the 1976-77 school year, the Seniors strutted in like the kings of the mountain. They were the head of the school system, the masters of the High School. It was the last year of many in which studying was needed for that long awaited H.S. Diploma. Each mind anticipated a new future. Some to college, some to work, some to sleep-in, and bum around all day. With no big event to put on, the campaign for funds never got in full swing. In fact, it never got started at all. The goals set were more abstract instead of monetary. They included the best football team ever, the best dramatic productions, the best half-time shows, the best songs ever sang, the best clubs and the most achievements for each individual. It was a time for all emotions. There was hope, fear, laughter, tears, and sadness. But most of all, it was the time of their lives. A time to be looked back upon when the heart reminisces. A time which comes once in a lifetime: the Senior year. Class Officers: Teresa Paxton. Treasurer; Phil Spurgus. President; Karen Hill. Vice-President; Diane Johnson. Secretary (ABSENT). In Memory Of. . . Our thoughts at graduation are not without sadness, as we think of our departed classmate Jerry Baker Born: March 2, 1959 Passed Away: Feb. 7, 1977 42 Underclassmen Juniors Being a Junior is an inbetween state which everyone feels in the grade level of eleven. The biggest excitement of their year is the putting on of the Junior-Senior Prom. The feeling of suppression still remains as long as the Seniors are around. The jubliance of bossing the Sophomores around is fun and to some people nasty. Juniors are almost there. Next year they will have parties; they will be graduating; they will have Senior Study halls; they will get to leave early; they will be top notched on the educational ladder. But all of this is ahead, so enjoyment must be made out of what they have or make for themselves. Junior Class Officers: Jenny Newlon, Treasurer; Debbie Gordon, President; Kathy Keister. High School students at last after all the years of waiting. In everybody, there was some kind of excitement flowing. It may have been the feeling of near adulthood, the pride of being with the older kids or maybe just a feeling deep inside which can't be explained. Putting up with pranks and antics was part of the troubles of a Sophomore. Everywhere the dominating Seniors and Juniors ruled. The beginners just couldn't fit in with the upperclassmen. As the year passed by the Greenhands were fitting in better. When the 1976-77 school year was finished, the sugar sweet taste of Juniors was near. It was their turn to boss around the Greenhands . Administration Mr. 'Nace can look with pride and satisfaction at his 11 year tenure as Superintendent of the New Lexington City School System. The system has grown steadily in size and quality during this period. As he views his administrative personnel and faculty, he can recall the many accomplishments that he and his staff have accomplished. The educational program of the community has increased academically, esthetically, athletically and physically. There has been an enlargement of curriculum with the construction of new buildings and the renovation of the old ones. As the second century of higher education begins, we can thank Mr. Nace and his successors for the accomplishments enjoyed in closing the first 100 years of secondary education in New Lexington, Ohio. 62 Richard Eberts Prin. Our goal was to attain all of these. July saw a gang of determined young men with their hair cropped close, dedicating their time, talent and efforts toward these goals. After many hours of toil and sweat, blisters and bruises, we were ready for the opening game at Logan. What a struggle. When the final whistle had blown, we were the winners. This game set the pace for the remainder of the season. The other games were relatively easy as the scores indicate. Our desire and conditioning resulted in making each game an evening of fun and games. Our first goal had been achieved, an undefeated season. We still had dreams of hope. Now began a week of hectic activity for coaches, players, faculty, administration and fans. We were all on our way to Dayton to play Brookville. The winner was to play for the State AA Championship. Emotions ran high, practices were tense, enthusiasm was everywhere. The game was a stand off. Neither team was able to penetrate the formidable defense with their vaulted offenses. Time was running out. It looked like a sudden death play off. Then the bubble burst. With only seconds on the clock. Brookville scored on a pass play. The season was over. Our dreams came close to reality. Our goals though not completely accomplished were worthy of a group of gallant young men. A young man had killed his wife with a very fine cover up. To bring him to a full confession, an inspector had his wife pose as the dead woman which would drive the killer crazy. The play was carried on with such vigor, that no one knew what would happen until the peak was reached and diminished as the curtains were pulled. “Mrs. Corban who is an imposter, explains to Father Kellerher that her husband, Danny, is crazy. Our Town “Our Town”, the winter play was unique in that the narrator (Cathy Trail) remained on stage and explained the events of the play as they happened. George and Emily, portrayed by Cindy Carpenter and Mark White, were the main figures in the play. They fell in love, got married, and Emily died. It was a simple plot and did what the author intended it to be: a normal life in a normal town. The only not-so-normal happening was in the Third Act when life after death was put in every day terms by the actors and actresses of “Our Town”. George and Emily exchange vows much to the amusement of the minister. Fiona (Marty Self) fell in love with Tommy (Bryan Searfos) and vise versa. The only problem was that Fiona lived in a quaint town which appeared only every one hundred years. If Tommy left he couldn't return again only if it was true love. His friend Jeff portrayed by Jeff Shreeves persuaded him to leave. To prove his true love. Good-luck and Good-bye Cindy and Karen ........ Twelve years of riding buses, tardy bells, lunch lines, detentions, long practices, play rehearsals, band camps, losses, victories, and togetherness came to an abrupt end for 176 New Lexington High School Seniors the night of May 22nd, 1977. They had made it. The class of double sevens had attained their goal . . . commencement . . . what an interesting group it was. They began the second century of higher education in New Lexington with a tremendous impact-note worthy. They approached their activities in a somewhat different manner than other classes, but they achieved their aims. They leave a rich heritage to be lived up to. Knowing the caliber of New Lexington students this will be surpassed by future Senior Classes. k mk!
