MVL Champs 5 Years The 73 season began with optimism. The Panthers opened their season by edging Logan 7-6. After a two-week lay off the Panthers avenged earlier losses to John Glenn by beating them 20 - 0. The Panthers then beat four more opponents before losing a heartbreaker to Morgan. The Panthers promptly came back and won their last two games. The highlight of the season was when Maysville had the ball on the one yard line with four downs to score. The Panthers held them and thus produced their fifth straight M.V.L. championship. A feat which no other team has ever done. Coach James Rockwell guided the gridders to success. He was aided by an experienced coaching staff consisting of coaches Larry Barnhouse and Larry Saffell. Also assisting him were coaches Allen Smith, Ken Stalter, and Mike Sherlock. This was Coach Rockwell’s fifteenth year as head coach of the Panthers. During this period he has obtained a winning percentage of 80.0% with a record of 109-27-11. M

Homecoming With Queen Kathy Queen Kathy Murray Sheridan. Defeated1 The 1973 Homecoming Queen was Kathy Murray. As Kathy stated, I was so very happy and honored to be elected as Homecoming Queen for our school. She felt that the program went smooth and quick. She was also very happy that the panthers beat Sheridan that night with a score of 39-0. At the Homecoming Dance Kathy thought that the band, Tobacco Road, was exceptionally good. The theme for the dance was Catch a Falling Panther Star.” Queen Kathy’s Escort was Rick Allen. Her Maid of Honor was Sherie Shumaker with Pete Finck as her escort. The other finalists were Karen Kinsel with Mark Caulk as her escort, Mary Pat McTeague with Paul Meikle as her escort, and Janet Cronin with Chuck Edwards as her escort.
