Seniors Represented Change The Class of ’73 was constantly changing throughout their four years at NLHS. Their freshman year started out with a tremendous change; former St. Aloysius students joined NLHS students. President Scott Elwood headed the class in their first year of high school life. The sophomore year brought with it increased activities. With Don Poling as President, the class sold Panther mascots and class pins for fund-raising projects. They also sponsored the Sophomore Dance, “The Haunted House”. In their junior year, the class made quite a change in school tradition. Under the leadership of President Don Epifano, the class chose to hold the Junior-Senior Prom at the Elks' Ballroom in Newark. Their theme for this event was “Moments to Remember”. The after-prom, in a discotheque setting, was held in the high school gym. They also ordered their class rings, decorated for the Homecoming Dance, and sold fellow classmates on Slave Day. As their senior year came and went, the class experienced still another change; they started their final year of high school in a new three-year school building. Don Poling served another year as President and guided the class through many important senior events including graduation, which took place in the new gymnasium. 14 Amy Able: French Club 1; Pep Club 1,2,3; Plays 2,4; Musical Cast 4, Crew 3; Honor Roll 1,2,3,-4; Homecoming Court 3; Journalism Newspaper 4; NHS 4; Scholarship Team 3; Girls Basketball 4; Cheerleader Res. 2, Var. 3,4; GAA 1,3,4. IN REMEMBRANCE - “Gone, but not forgotten” ... As the year ends, we again pause to remember those who met tragedy and will not graduate with us. We now remember Danny Holman. 35 Juniors Developed Responsibility The junior class opened up their first days of the school year by sponsoring the 1972 Homecoming Dance. “Happiness is an NLHS Homecoming” was the theme, and the decorations were created from the well-known Snoopy characters. Slave Day was held in March. As in the past, it proved to be a great boost to their finances in preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom. The highest sale made was the principal’s office, which sold for $27. The majority of slaves were bought by seniors and a few faculty members. They were forced by their masters to do a number of unusual tasks on the gym floor such as jumping jacks, leap frog, push-ups, etc. Something new this year was the holding of the prom in the cafeteria of the senior high school. The junior class decided upon “What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love” as the theme for this annual project. Another first for this occasion was holding the after-prom at the “Cellar”. During their busy year, the juniors selected four responsible people to lead their class in these important school events to see that things were done well. The Class President was Rick Allen; Vice-President, Kay Newlon; Secretary, Bonita Tackett; Treasurer, Larry Howdyshell. 38 Rick Allen Fred Ansel Christine Barnes Dean Barnes Margaret Barnes Larry Barton Brenda Beatty Debbie Blosser Roy Blosser Paul Bohach Steve Boyden Marianne Brown Robin Brown Marie Butcher dreg Carpenter Mark Caulk Jim Chuvalas Diana ('lark Linda Clark Rick Clark 39 Hang in there Kinsel. The sophomores were faced with a second year of being the “freshmen” of the student body since the change from a four-year to a three-year high school was made. Early in the year, the sophomores embarked upon ordering their class rings. They voted on the company and emblem for their rings. The class chose to hold a raffle for a radio as their major fund-raising project. The purpose of this was to start building their treasury to meet the needs of next year’s homecoming and prom. Their excellent record of nine wins and only one loss enabled them to share the Muskingum Valley League crown. This makes the fourth consecutive MVL title captured by the Panthers, which no other league team has ever done. A victory over host Logan opened up the 1972 season. MVL play began with a disappointing loss to John Glenn Muskies as a result of the first tie-breaker decision in area and MVL history. An eight-game winning streak finished out a successful year for the mighty Panthers. A high point of the season was when Xew Lex stormed back in the se- cond half of play to hand the hosting Sheridan Generals their first defeat. An experienced coaching staff led the gridders to success. Coach Jim Rockwell was greatly aided by Coaches Larry Barnhouse and Larry Saffell. Also assisting him were Coaches Allen Smith. Kent Stalter. and Mike Sherlock. This year was a big turning point for head coach and athletic director. Jim Rockwell. He celebrated his 100th victory with a win over the visiting Maysville Panthers. Experience aided the Panther team by the return of six varsity members from the past year. Their showing for the season was 9-11 in the won-lost column. This record certainly did not represent the team’s speed, timing, and ball-handling. After a tough regular season, the Panthers entered into the sectional tournaments with a great deal of enthusiasm. Excellent teamwork brought the Sheridan Generals to a triumphant defeat. This was followed by a disappointing loss to Nelsonville-York, which ended tournament play for the New Lex cagers. After two bad defeats at the beginning of the season, the young squad was always in the ballgame. The team was composed of two seniors, four juniors, and twelve sophomores. The team ended the season with a 5-7 record in the MVL and 6-10 overall games. The MVL produced two regional finalist teams and a state finalist, which indicates the strength of the league. The high point of the season was the 2-1 victory over Fairfield Union, who had a 16-5 record at the time. The Panther baseballers lost to Belpre in tournament play. Coach Ken Stalter did an excellent coaching job with this young team. They gained a tremendous amount of experience and improved their skills to make next year a very promising season. Varsity. Lack of experience was a problem at first because of only one returning varsity player. This was quickly solved by the excellent playing abilities of five reserves from last year. The Panthers showed their talent by ending up with an MVL seasonal record of 14-4. In addition to this, they held an excellent non-league record of 8-3 by defeating such teams as Newark, Zanesville, Chillicothe, Lancaster, and Waverly. Under the leadership of Coach John Neff, four sophomore members of the team won first place against 18 teams in the district tournament. This sent them on to the state tournament in Columbus with 12 participating teams. The Panther golfers also finished in third place in the Muskingum Valley League and fifth in the MVL tournament. This consisted of many active school clubs, the band, cheerleaders, and a iloat for the queen candidates; which was decorated by the GAA. The suspense came to an end when Diane Hiles was crowned 1972 NLHS Homecoming Queen. Her court included Melinda Brown, Kathy Smith, Dixie Deavers, and Vinetia Clowers. They were escorted by Jim and John Fiore. During the game, Queen Diane Hiles reigned over a victory as the New Lexington Panthers cracked the Crooksville Ceramics 36-0. Final dress rehearsal lecture. “Up the Down Staircase” was a well-received play given in the Fall. This play was performed by a host of characters; which included Amy Able as Sylvia Barrett, Chuck Edwards as Joe Ferone, Tom Mooney as J.J. McHabe, Denise Hogen-miller as Bea Schacter, Bill McNulty as Paul Barringer, and Beth Johnson as Alice Blake. This moving story settled around a fictional high school; which was overcrowded and understaffed. A teacher in her first year tries to deal with problems that are sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking. Mr. Charles Diezman directed this play. Two public performances were given. J.J. McHabe, principal. Ferone gets chewed out by McHabe. Paul is confused by Alice’s letter. Alice daydreams “Portrait Of Jenny” For the first time, a second three-act play was produced tor the middle of the school year. “Portrait of Jenny” was chosen for this spot by Director, Mr. Charles Diezman. The story centers around Jenny, a girl and a woman of two lives—two worlds: one real, here, now—the other a veiled, mysterious life where a girl can move in time, coming back to see the man she loves at unexpected moments and at different ages. It was a haunting, powerful, memorable love story. The leading roles included, Don White as Eben Adams, Beth Johnson as Jenny Appleton, and Mike Williams as Gus. The play was scheduled for public performance but was unable to be presented due to the unfortunate accident of Don White. Eben asks to do a portrait of Jenny. 118 Emily is upset over Jenny. Sid awaits her cue. Jenny is upset about her parent’s death. Emily looks on in disbelief. Eben and Arne plan to conquer the world. Anna eavesdrops on Eben and Jenny. Jenny tells her best friend, Emily, to get lost so she can talk to Eben alone. Prisoners portray the characters of Quixote’s imagination. Chuck Edwards as Don Quixote de La Mancha. Muleteers cry out for Aldonza! “Man Of La Mancha” This year’s musical, “Man of La Mancha” was directed by Mr. Charles Diezman. As the sixth spring musical, it was undoubtedly the greatest NLHS has presented. Man of La Mancha” is sometimes referred to as a musical within a play. The action begins with Cervantes being imprisoned to await trial before the Spanish Inquisition. While in prison he is given a summary trial by his fellow prisoners. For his defense he acts out the story of Don Quixote, a somewhat idealistic and somewhat insane crusader against evil. To complete this charade he is forced to use different prisoners to perform the characters in his play. The play constantly changes from reality into the imaginary. Some of the characters were Chuck Edwards as Cervantes, Mike Boley as Sancho, and Rita O’Farrell as Aldonza. This year’s musical received three standing ovations during the public performances which had never happened in the history of musical drama at NLHS. The barber, Bill Bolyard, pleads to Don Quixote, The governor, Tom Mooney, dubbs Don Quixote a Knight, Knight of the Mirrors, Keith White. Beth Johnson as Antonia sings her confession to the Padre, Max Gregory. Jean Walke portrayed the Housekeeper. Rita O’Farrell as Aldonza. .JW h '(X The caf6 setting of the 1973 prom. “What The World Needs Now Is Love Sweet Love” The theme of the 1973 prom was “What the World Needs Now Is Love Sweet Love.” This was the first prom held in the new school. The club sponsored a basketball game between the New Lexington faculty and a team from WTVN radio. Later in the year they held a dance featuring the Heavy Duty. Then came their selling project of dishcloths which proved to be quite successful. Also, the club sponsored the donut stand uptown in hopes of earning more money. These students learn much about the business world in the morning classes and in the afternoon the seniors experience what they have learned in on-the-job training. Again this year DECA members sold calendars for a fund-raising project. For the first time the members sold pens, pencils, notebook paper, and stenography pads with NLHS printed on them. Girls Athletic Association With its many activities, the GAA once again had a successful year under the direction of Mrs. Georgianne Bethel. Their biggest responsibility was building the queen’s float for the Homecoming parade. This year, some of the GAA members rode in the parade in a pep truck to help boost the homecoming spirit. Their chief moneymaking source was selling programs at football and basketball games. The GAA also held basketball intramurals and bowling. In the spring some members volunteered to sell poppies for the American Cancer Society. At the closing of the school year they held their annual Mother-Daughter banquet. The NLHS Singers’ Group, directed by Mrs. Marlene Diezman, had a busy year in preparation for their singing engagements. The girls had a candy selling project to help pay for their trip to Dayton. This trip was made possible by an invitation for them to sing at the State Elk’s Convention Ladies Party in Dayton, Ohio. The group, chaperoned by Mr. Mrs. Mike Sherlock, Mr. Mrs. Royce Cannon, Mr. John Nelson, Mr. Jim Brown, and Mr. Mrs. Charles Diezman, spent the night in the eleven-story Holiday Inn in downtown Dayton. Another of their main public performances was a Christmas cantata which they presented at the First United Methodist Church. This was a most enjoyable year for all members of the group. Band Attended Camp At Rio Grande This year the band was busier than ever making public performances as well as regular school activities. They traveled to the Circleville Pumpkin Show, Millersport Sweet Corn Festival, Columbus Lazarus Parade, and the West Jefferson Marching Band Festival. Members of the band attended “Crescendo” band camp at Rio Grande College in August. This helped prepare them for competition in the Maysville Band Invitational and the District 13 Solo and Ensemble contest. An exchange concert was held with the Crooksville band and again this year a concert was televised by WHIZ-TV. Members also held their fourth annual fruit sale. Quiz Team Is Number One The NLHS Quiz Team slipped by Zanesville High School in the championship match of High School Honor Society; M.C. was Joe Lunghoffer. A $1,000 scholarship was presented to the school by sponsor, Marathon Oil Co., at an awards banquet held in Findlay, Ohio. Each team member received a $250 check; Ailene Totten, Tom Mooney, Cliff Sayre, and Mike Kelley. Eighteen teams from the surrounding area competed in the quiz show which was broadcast weekly over Channel 18. New Lex defeated Meadowbrook, Heath, Cambridge in the semifinals, and Zanesville in the final match. The championship match with ZHS was undoubtedly the most exciting in the series. Zanesville led comfortably at halftime with the score being 115 to 55 in their favor. New Lexington came to life in the second half and was able to ward off a valiant attempt by ZHS to win. The final score was New Lexington 175 and Zanesville 170. NLHS had been the outstanding team in the area since the program began. In the program’s three year existence, New Lex had won the championship twice and was runner-up last year. Ailene Totten was the only team member also on last year’s team. Quiz team members receive prize checks. 167 National Honor Society The New Lexington Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted twenty-four outstanding students. This year’s traditional ceremony was shortened and changed somewhat so that it would bring out the true meaning of this society. The candlelight ceremony was led by Sheri Thompson.
