Although the weather was extremely hot, the Panthers had to be ready to perform their very best at their opener two weeks later with Athens. In pre-season games the Panthers won three decisive victories over Nelsonville, Belpre, and Utica. Athens, with one of the strongest football teams in the area, invaded New Lexington. They carried home a 42-0 victory as the Panthers were outclassed by the Bulldogs. The Big Reds of M M were next on the schedule. This was the league opener for the Panthers and a must game so they would be in contention for the league title. After a hard fought defensive game, the Panthers came out on the short end of 12-0 score. The Panthers jumped out of the league for the next game at Liberty Union. Here the Panthers found themselves and saw to it that the Lions were no match. Adding an efficient offense to a good defense, the Panthers defeated the Lions 48-0. New Lexington met a huge Maysville team next. Here the Panthers showed that speed won over size as they triumphed 8-6. The Panthers returned home to stun the Roseville Ramblers by a score of 30- 12. Next on the league list was New Concord. The teams battled on even terms the first half, but New Lexington held the Muskies to only one touchdown in the second half to defeat them 42-22. The Homecoming with the Jayhawks also proved to be another romp for New Lexington. The Panthers won over Dresden by a 56-0 score. The key game with Philo todetermine second place was next. The Panthers faltered as Philo was victorious 22-0. For the first time in Panther history, N.L.H.S. battled West Muskingum on the home field. The Tornadoes caught the Panthers before a complete recovery from the Philo game and tied them 6-6. The last game with arch-rival Crooksville seemed to be the victory that would make a successful season. The Panthers began the game in the correct manner with a 52-yard run to take the lead. This gave the Panthers the confidence they needed, and they went on to run over the Ceramics 32-8. New Lexington ended the grid season with a 6-3-1 overall record and a tie with Philo for second place in the M.V.L. with a 5-2 record. 55 Panthers Tie for First Row; Bob Ratliff (Manager), Bill Lindamood, Mike Jerrells, Neil Tharp, Rick Jadwin, Rick Fletcher, Rick Savage, Ray Devereaux, John Mullins, Terry Fitzgerald, Fred Clements, and Steve Howdy shell. The 1965 New Lexington track team had a very successful year, winning the Muskingum Valley League championship for the fourth year out of the five years it has been held, the New Lexington Invitational, the Philo Relays, ana a fourth place finish in the Marietta Invitational. There were several new school records set during the course of the season. Among them were: high hurdles, discus, shot put, 880 relay, mile relay, low hurdles, and the 100 yd. dash. For the year the team finished with a 52 and 7 record. Though this was a very rewarding year, it also marked the first year in the last six in which the team had lost a dual track meet. A new individual scoring record was set by Terry Fitzgerald, a junior letter-man, with a total of 185 1 2 points. Terry Fitzgerald competes with Fred Clements during a low-hurdles race. Cheerleaders Help Build School Spirit Six girls were chosen to represent New Lexington High School as cheerleaders for the 1965 football season. In preparation for the active season the girls began practicing in July. During the season, the girls sponsored a different idea for each pep rally. They also went to a cheerleading clinic at Ohio State University. Five girls were chosen to represent our school as basketball cheerleaders for varsity. Four girls were also chosen as reserve cheerleaders. These girls worked with the pep club at all games. To help pay for their uniforms, both basketball and football cheerleaders sponsored a dance, sold Panther cushions, and had the stands at one game. To guide them through their final year, the seniors elected Ginny Self, president; Janice Hoops, vice-president; Rosemary Davisson, secretary; and David Hinkle, treasurer. Student council representatives were Don Danielson, Larry Gleason, Grace Keister, and Mike Snyder. The student body elected Karon Kishler for the honor of Homecoming Queen, and Janice Hoops was chosen as senior attendant. The seniors chose burgundy and white for the class colors, and white carnation as the class flower. As their motto, the seniors selected Out of the Life of School into the School of Life. Under the direction of Mr. John Neff, class advisor, the seniors found time to make money for their class by presenting the Christmas dance, Christmas Soiree, and by having the stands. The Senior Class play, Play It Cool , under the direction of Mr. Richard McGonagle, netted profits for the class and brought enjoyment to the student body ana to the public. Putting together the annual also took much of the seniors' time. The seniors' high school careers came to an end with baccalaureate and commencement. Now as they look to the future and its many challenges, they will have the academic background to face its challenges and to become the citizens of tomorrow. 135 Seniors Susan Ball and Doug Thompson in moments of study. 136 PATRICIA ANN BRUNTON CAROL ANN BRYANT JOHN CHRISTY FREDERICK R. The class also presented the play to the public and to the Junior High. The play started as Eddie Hopkins was elected president of his senior class. This made everyone happy except Barbara, Eddie's girl friend. Barbara thought that Ecfdie was too conceited as it was. Meanwhile a girl law student named Eunice moved next door to Eddie. Eddie flipped for her and acted like a college cat. But things were straightened out when Eunice eloped with her boy friend and Eddie went back with Barb. The play was directed by Mr. Richard McGonagle. 151 SENIOR ACTIVITIES DONALD L.
