Current officers of the New Lexington Chapter are Doug Householder, President; Tom Kokensparger, Vice-President; Joe Dennis, Secretary; Paul Dickson, Treasurer; Larry Householder, Reporter; Bill Gilligan, Sentinel. This group engages in a wide range of activities. Among these activities are community service projects, state judging contests, stressing leadership, and each boy must have home projects. A member begins as a Green Hand and may work to the following degrees: Chapter Farmer, State Farmer (2 boys for every 100 over the state), American Farmer (2 boys for every 1000 over the state), and Star Farmer (4 in the United States). Achievement pens are awarded annually: Green Hand (bronze), Chapter Farmer-(silver), State Farmer (gold), attendance, parliamentary procedure, state livestock judging, best farming program, outstanding in soil and water project, in farm mechanics, and outstanding freshman boy. Spearheaded by an offense that racked up 291 points and a defense that limited the opposition to 42 points, me mighty Panthers extended their 2 year winning streak to 20 games (including three ties). Hot weather failed to keep the football boys from working hard in mid-August for preparation in the up-coming campaign. Hopes were high for mentor Jim Rockwell as ten lettermen returned from the 1960 squad. To open the season, the Panthers traveled to Coal Grove for a non-league match. The Orange and Black scored in the second period on a 9-yard jaunt by Ralph Hutchinson, and Joe Neff added two points on a pass from Ron Hoops. In the fourth, Jerry Beach tallied to give the Panthers a 14-0 victory. McConnelsville's Big Reds came to New Lexington to open the Muskingum Valley League race, and were bounced 22-6. The Big Reds scored first, but after that it was the Panthers' game. The next tussle pitted Caldwell's Redskins, with a 2-0 mark, against the Orange and Black's identical record, and it looked as if there would be a close contest. However, the league tilt developed into a lop-sided 54-6 win for the rampaging Panthers. Chauncey-Dover, unbeaten and unscored upon in their first three games, were the Orange and Black's final non-league opposition. The Blue Devils operated from a wide-open single wing, and proved its possibilities by getting the first TD. New Lexington re-talliated with a touchdown, and Chauncey countered with their second 6-pointer. The Panther defensive unit dug in, and held the Blue Devils while the Orange and Black romped to a 44-12 rout. Jerry Beach scored four touchdowns for New Lexington. Roseville's Ramblers seeking their first win, were bounced 32-0 by the Panthers. Again Jerry Beach was the workhouse as he tallied four TD's. Friday the 13th had but one ill-effect on the New Concord-New Lexington game--rain. However, the Little Muskies had other bad luck as they were pasted 21-0 by the Panthers. Dresden's pesky Jayhawks almost succeeded in upsetting the Orange and Black's victory skein, but fell short 7-6. The Jayhawk defense stymied all Panther attempts to score in the first half, but late in the third period Jerry Beach scored the lone New Lexington touchdown, and Ralph Hutchinson kicked the extra point, which proved to be the winning margin. Dresden scored with 30 seconds left in the game, but their attempt for two points after was stymied by a penalty, and the Panthers held. With the 7-6 squeaker still fresh in their minds, New Lexington rebounded with a decisive 69-6 trouncing of Philo. Seven Panthers scored in the whalloping. That same night the Orange and Black were assured of at least a tie for the league title as McConnelsville beat Crooksville. Rain fell in torrents during the Glouster game, but it failed to halt the Panthers as they splashed to a 58-12 victory over the Tomcats. Pandemonium reigned in the locker-room after the game when the Panthers heard of Crooksville's loss to Caldwell, thereby handing New Lexington its first Muskingum Valley League crown since 1954. Crooksville's Ceramics posed the only serious threat that could halt the Panthers' unbeaten status. After a shaky first half, the Panthers were ahead 8-0. The second half was another story as New Lexington buried the Ceramics with 20 points to snatch a 28-6 win. The defensive unit of the Panthers contained Crooksville the entire game to help greatly in the victory.
