V The Lexmgtoman Published By The Senior Class Of 1958 ADVISOR JOHN NEFF Dedication We, the Seniors of New Lexington High School, respectfully dedicate the Lexiontonian to the faculty of New Lexington High School whose capable supervision has greatly aided our efforts in securing a high type of education. ■ Our American way of life and the future of all liberty loving people are on trial in the eyes of the world. The youth of our nation must take advantage of every opportunity to prepare themselves to take their place of leadership in the development of the social and scientific aspects of our free society. To keep and strengthen the free world and insulate it against -the inroads of International Communism is the makor objectives of those nations dedicated to freedom. We hope that your High School training will serve as a stepping stone to prepare you for a worthwhile contribution to this objective of the free world. SUPERINTENDENT Myron F. Fowler The Plus of Praise. Praise is a kind of spiritual vitamin. Children, grown-ups, all of us, need it to be emotionally healthy. We can only get it from others. In a sense, it is a debt we owe each other—especially to those who are doing things for us. A decent salary alone never pays for such service. Even a raise won't do it. But put a P in front of the word and watch what happens. There is only one thing worse than the smugness and prejudices of the ignorant, and that is the smugness and prejudices of the educated. 4 PRINCIPAL Linton D. Lewis MRS. Class History In the fall of 1954, eighty-four bounding students entered their freshman year of high school. However, after the first few weeks, our advisors, Mr. Priode, Mrs. Adcock, and Miss Bower, had us well under control. To lead the class, we chose Kenneth Stalter, Leeman Spradlin, Larry Thompson, and Tom Tucker, president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer, respectively. On the Student Council, we placed Jim Williams, Betty Rexrode, and Tom Charles. From our ample supply of attractive girls, we chose Joyce Harbaugh for the freshman attendant at the homecoming. The next year, our number was reinforced by one, making a total of eighty-five for Mrs. Priode and Mrs. Bailey's Home rooms. For president, we again elected Kenneth Stalter; for vice president, Leeman Spradlin; secretary, Joyce Harbaugh; treasurer, Tom Tucker. This year we began in earnest to earn money for our senior trip by having bake sales and other activities. Our student council representatives were Mary Anderson and Paul Sorrell. For the sophomore attendant, we selected Kaye Rankin. The summers are going very fast now, and, when we enter our junior year, we begin to realize how little time we have left. For the 1956-1957 school year, Mr. John Neff and Mr. Paul Martin became our class advisors. Our strength has declined by five students, leaving a total of eighty. Our experienced officers led us again this year: Kenneth Stalter, Leeman Spradlin, Larry Thompson, and Tom Tucker. On the student council, we placed Nancy Godfrey and Paul Sorrell. For the homecoming, our junior attendant was Betty McGaughey. Our junior class play, Papa Says No , was a success and added to our treasury. Jeff Jenkins gained the honor of attending Boys' State for our high school. By now that treasury was at a fair level; however our banquet and prom, the theme of which was Mid Summer Night's Dream , took their share of our profits. In no time at all the long-awaited senior year was here and we were back with Mr. Neff and Mr. Martin. All seventy-four of us were now one year older, and worst of all, we began to realize it. However, we became so engrossed in the year's many activities that we had no time for such thoughts. Kenneth Stalter, president, and Tom Tucker, treasurer, were also our football team's co-captains. Other officers were: vice president, Leeman Spradlin; secretary, Larry Thompson. Jeff Jenkins and Jim Williams represented us on the Student Council for our last year. The school selected Kay Rankin to be the homecoming queen. Our senior attendant was Norellan Sims. Now, while we are amid these activities, they carry little meaning. Given a few years, these and other memories will bring us regret—regret that we could not stay young, and enjoy these blissfull years forever. But we realize that time must go on, and we must grow reluctantly older. However, we do not falter at this thought, but look to the future and strive ever to better ourselves in this modern age. Connie Anderson and Joy Puterbaugh were elected to student council. One of the first class projects was a bake sale, which was very successful due to the co-operation of all the class members. In the spring of the year the class held their class party. The freshmen and their guests had a very enjoyable time. This year the sophomore class officers are: President,Linda Lewis; Secretary, Rodney Lacey; Treasurer, Janet Patterson. Student council members are Jean Patterson, Jo Puterbaugh, and Mary Hammond. It was decided this year that class dues should be collected. The dues are being added to the class treasury. Two class projects are being planned for early spring--a spring dance and a bake sale. The New Lexington Panthers were the smallest team in the league and they were the lightest team that has been at New Lexington High School for many years. Despite this fact, they were the biggest team « hen it came to desire and fight. The Panthers opened their season by repeating the feat of the 1953 team and roiling over the Zanesville Rosecrans by three touchdowns in the annual Olympia. The team started its regular season with a bang by winning the first two games in hard fought battles. The next game was out of league and the Panthers reversed the score of the Chancey-Dover and New Lex game of last year with a 20-6 win. The following Friday, New Lex plowed its way back into league play with a 33-6 win over Roseville. The Panthers came out on the short end of the score after forty-eight minutes of brusing football at New Concord. The team had little time for low spirits, however, for the Homecoming game was the following week. The team triumphed with a 20-0 win over Dresden. New Lex's second and last defeat came at the hands of Philo after a hard fought football game. Glouster offered little resistance as New Lex walked over them in the last game for the Seniors on our home field. The annual rival game between Crooksvllle and New Lex found the Panthers downing the Ceramics by a single touchdown scored in the first of the fourth quarter. The Panthers' success was acquired through close co-operation between the coaches and players and among the players themselves. The New Lexington squad was led by Coach Martin, who did a wonderful Job. Assistant coaches, Lou Flores and Bill Montgomery, did a marvelous job of assisting the head coach and leading the boys. The team was headed on the field by capable co-captains, Tom Tucker and Ken Stalter. A powerful offensive eleven were rated the second offense in the M.V.L. and went scoreless in only one game. The defensive squad had only one more point scored against it than did the league leader. New Concord. Although the second place team, New Lex, was unable to place one player on the All M.V.L. first team, co-captain Tom Tucker, was the only winner of a position on the second team offense. But New Lex placed Paul Hutchinson, Ken Stalter, Joe Huffman, and Pat Stalter on the second team defense. The team honored Paul Hutchinson as lineman of the year and Ken Stalter as back of the year. The fighting panthers sustained a loss to a hot M M team the first night. The panthers then struck back with five straight victories before being upset again. On January 17, the Panthers took over first place in the MVL with a fine team victory over Dresden. This place was short-lived as they lost to Philo the following Friday to throw the race into a three-way tie. The Panthers ended the MVL league as tri-champs with a final league victory over their old rival Crooksville. The Panthers ended the year with a 10 win, 8 lose record. At the start of the year the team members elected two seniors as co-captains. They were Paul Sorrell and Ken Stalter. We feel that congratulations are due to our coaches, Louis Flores and William Montgomery for coaching their teams through a fine year. The year's activities started August 19 with formal rehersals leading to a fine concert at the Ohio State Fair. The football season was opened in Zanesville with the Band participating in the Olympia. We missed only two games of the season and that was because of the weather. Perhaps the most outstanding Half-Time Show staged was AROUND THE WORLD , a musical of the different countries visited. The Instrumental Music Department sponsored the Ohio University Symphonic Band in a concert here for the benefit of the school system. The concert was received with great enthusiasm. The climax of the Band's year was the Formal Concert, March 28. Some of the more popular selections performed were: Overture from THE KING AND I ; Overture from MY FAIR LADY ; and BUGLER'S HOLIDAY , by Leroy Anderson--this was a trumpet trio played by Ronald Denny, Red Self, and Larry Coffman. The highly successful year was due to the enthusiasm and co-operation of the band members. The Assistant Conductors were: 1st, Charlotte Walters, and 2nd, Ronald Denny. The student council of New Lexington High School, as a member of the National Association of Student Councils, under the counseling of Linton D. Lewis and leadership of our president, Jim Williams, has been very active. We have been very charitable in collecting both clothing for World Clothing Week and money for the March of Dimes and the Heart Fund. Our first duty was to sell season football tickets as well as making the concession stands available at the M M game to our football fans. During football season, we also sponsored the homecoming ceremony before the game along with the flowers for the queen and her attendants. The student council was not too active in social affairs, sponsoring but one dance, the Halloween Dance, in conjunction with St. Al's. In basketball season the student council had the Glouster stands in addition to the coat check at the Non-County tournaments. Our duties ended in a pleasant trip and program which were selected by the members. 48 Suzanne Foraker Tom Walsh Rita Wilson Ott Shumaker Larry Coffman Kaye Rankin Joyce Harbaugh Nora Ellen Sims Jeffery Jenkins Marianne Walsh Patti Ball They Fed Us Mrs. Pletcher, Mrs. Ramsell, Mrs. Tague, Mrs. Forquer, Mrs. Teal They Served Us FIRST ROW: Barbara Longstreth, Beth Brown, Rita Sands, Janet Sorrell, Barbara Tobachak, Sue Norris. Senior Class Play DOWN TO EARTH The Senior Class play, Down to Earth, is a play of subtle humor and quiet charm. The prologue starts the story on its merry way with two angels descending to earth to pick up a couple of elderly souls. Wilfred and Agnes, the real angels, have a complicated mission because Pilone, a half-angel, has joined them in a kind of heavenly hitchhike. The two elderly souls who were supposed to be picked up are Augusta Applegate, a wealthy and sarcastic spinster; and Herman Howell, a kindly, retired sailor. Herman is ready, but Augusta hates to part with her money. On the side of the two angels are Augusta's two nieces, Orpha Teel and Millie Bronsley. Orpha has designs on a rich husband for her daughter, Ruthie. Millie has an inventor-husband, Baxter. June, Millie and Baxter's daughter, is engaged to Richard White and they want Aunt Augusta to lend them $1,000 so they can be married. Pilone stirs up and manipulates three romances while managing things so Augusta gives her money away. Diana, Augusta's frustrated maid, suddenly qualifies as an angel. Pilone, who is in love with Diana, becomes a full-fledged angel to be near Diana forever. 54 Senior Autographs Autographs 58 CONGRATULATIONS, SENIORS OF '58 McBEE JEWELRY PHONE 785 106 SOUTH MAIN STREET OHIO 60 NEW LEXINGTON Compliments Of Clouse-Snider Dairy Phone 29 - R High Street Compliments Of A Friend 61 COMPLIMENTS OF HERFF-JONES COMPANY MANUFACTURING JEWELERS STATIONERS 1407 - 1419 NORTH CAPITOL AVENUE 62 INDIANAPOLIS 7, INDIANA Best Wishes To The Class Of 1958 The Snider Flautt Lumber Co.
