L. H. S. for their high school training. A few were new, but to most of us it was just stepping up from junior high. Our advisers were Miss Newlon and Miss Smith. With their guidance we struggled through our first year of high school. Loretta Hutchinson was elected queen's attendant. Our class officers were: Wilma Weaver, Janet Kicnar, Gale Spurbeck, and Nellie Shumaker. Student Council members were: Faith Prichard,.Bi11 Skeens, Eddie Blakeman and Patricia Johnson. The following fall we again assembled at N. L. H. S., but this time our class roll had dropped to eighty-three. Our advisers were Mrs. Proide and Mrs. Bailey. Class officers were: Jim Millar, Jim Kitchen, Suanne Vogel, and Roy Spradlin. Student Council members were: Jim Miller, Roy Spradlin and Sally Cochran. Shelby Shirkey was our choice for queen's attendant. With the advent of our junior year we numbered seventy-four. CXir junior year was a very prosperous and enjoyable one. We raised money for our prom and banquet by having basketball and football stands and bake sales. That year Jim Kitchen, Mary Lou Hammond, Faith Prichard, and Norman Rockwell were elected to the Student Council. Class officers of the juniors were: Jim Miller, Paul Gallagher, Vaughn Fink, and Roy Spradlin. The theme for our prom was A Paris Street Scene”. Members of our class were on the football team which shared the M. V. L. championship with Philo. In March, Nellie Shumaker, Wilma Weaver, Faith Prichard, and Jenny Reed were named to the National Honor Society. Janet Buchanan was the queen's attendant. Finally our senior year rolled around. It had seemec. like a long wait. Now the days began to fly. We worked hard making money for the senior trip and publication of this annual. Student Council members were: Jim Kitchen and Neil Sorrell. Jim Millei1', Paul Gallagher, Vaughn Fink, and Roy Spradlin again served as class officers. This was the first time Nex. Lex High School had won the undisputed football and basketball championship of the M. V. • Jife Miller and Paul Gallagher were football co-captains. On the basketball team Jim Miller and Ronpfe Lucas were co-captains. Nellie Shumaker was chosen queen of the Homecoming Ceremonies. Hazel Smith was the senior attendant. Five 24 N. L. H. S. students placed high in the senior scholarship test. They were: Faith Prichard, Wilma Weaver, Norman Rockwell, Roy Spradlin and Jenny Reed. It is sad to think of leaving our school and friends, but we must remember that all those who have gone before traveled this same road. Now we must turn our thoughts toward greater accomplishments for which we should now be fitted. The orchestra of Bob Hallaway supplied the music from a balcony above our Street of Gaiety . The street had an outdoor cafe with tables below the balcony. The gym was decorated in green and white, the colors of the class of 54 . Junior-Senior Banquet The theme for our banquet was Rue de Gaite, meaning the French Street of Gaiety. In order to create the French atmosphere, the menu was written in French and small French can-can dancers were given each guest as favors. Our guest speaker was Dr. Albert Kishler Jr. of Malta-McConnelsville, an alumnus of New Lexington High School. 47 New Lexington High School Band The New Lexington High School band, under the direction of G. The play, Our Miss Brooks , is an adaptation from the show of the same name on television. Miss Brooks is in the midst of producing a class play. Between troubles with the basketball players, the principal, and the students, parents. Miss Brooks doubts if they will ever be able to produce the play. Another factor causing complications is her romance with the basketball coach. The climax occurs when the Joy is a success and Miss Brooks gets her man.
