With the friendly co-operation and financial assistance the families and business men of New Knox- ville have given us, we have been able to record the accomplishments of this past school year. We also wish to thank the business men of surrounding communities for their additional support. Through the publication of this book we hope to increase adult interest in the educational facilities and activities offered in the New Knoxville School. It is to be hoped that this will be a benefit not only to us but also to the coming generations. We feel this worthwhile venture has helped to better prepare us as indi- viduals for the part we must now take in our community, our country, and the world. We will continually strive to keep alive the free educational system dominant in our great country which is truly a priceless heritage . VAAA - SUB TIT TE F C LTY Mrs. Mary Hoge Mr. Frank Dicke Mrs. Viola Katterheinrich Mrs. Mildred Aufderhaar Mrs. Clara Bode The above substitute teachers have played an important part in our school system this year. All types of sickness, especially influenza, affected the faculty as well as a large percentage of the students. While the school remained in session, it would not have been very efficient except for the good deeds of these teachers who left their work at home so that the school could operate properly. Mrs. Mary Hoge substituted twelve weeks in first grade from October until Christmas vacation. She also helped us on several other occasions. Mrs. Mildred Aufderhaar was also very helpful when we needed an additional teacher. On one occasion we had three substitute teachers. Mr. Frank Dicke came in to teach a week when Mr. Freymuth accompanied several of the F.F.A. boys to Kansas City, Missouri to attend the National F.F.A. Convention. Mrs. Clara Bode took over for Mrs. Ilversman for one six weeks period as well as other periodic occasions when members of the Eversman family were sick. Hired as substitute teacher, Mrs. Viola Kat- terheinrich came on short notice throughout the school year and substituted for almost every faculty menl- ber at some time or other. We are deeply indebted to these substitute teachers and thank them for their services. MEMOIR CLASS HISTORY We, the Class of 1953, entered New Knoxville High School as bold, green freshmen on September 6, 1949. High school life seemed much different at first but we soon adjusted ourselves as we took part in many activities. We began the year with sixteen boys and eight girls-a total of twenty-four. We had ten boys out for basketball and eleven for baseball. Our class was quite musical, too, with nine band members and thirteen in the chorus. At the end of the year, we lost Kermit Miller, who found other interests. We returned to school as sophomores in the fall of 1950, with twenty- three members. We had nine members in the band and our chorus member- ship increased to fifteen. Meanwhile, six boys remained out for basketball and eleven for baseball. Three of our girls were elected cheerleaders during the basketball season. In the fall of 1951, we began our junior year with the same members that finished the previous year. During the year we lost Harold Moellenkamp who found interests elsewhere. We were all very proud when we received our class rings. On October 19th, our class presented the play Great Scotts , which was a great success. On May 9, 1952, the junior-Senior reception in honor of the Class of 1952 was given by us. Our class remained well represented in the band, chorus, and sports. We had two cheerleaders and a basketball manager from our class. We began the last year of our high school education as dignified seniors on September 2, 1952. Our membership was reduced to twenty-one, having lost one member, who was not promoted with us at the close of the junior year. W'e again took part in many extra-curricular activities. On March 27, we successfully presented our Senior Class play, Beauty and the Beef , before a large audience. We were the honored guests of the junior-Senior reception, sponsored by the class of 1954. We will long remember and cherish in our memory the week of May 17, 1953, as the beginning and end of our graduation exercises. MEMOIR CLASS PROPHECY On Thursday evening, the year of 1978, I was sitting in my television suite wondering what became of my former classmates. A little bit dejected, I decided to turn to video for relaxation and happiness. So I turned on my famous M.B. television set, model 1978 which was my own original design and for which I had just received my patent rights. Imagine my surprise, when the picture on channel 12 F cleared, I saw JOANN KUCK leaving Paris, France. She has been teaching drama in the University of Paris for the past three years. She seemed to be very tfred. Maybe her pupils acted up for her like we did when we were in school. I began to wonder if I could find other classmates on television. I turned the dial to channel I0 A and gazed upon ELTON STIENECKER, now superintendent of the Giraffe Training Company of Africa. Elton appears to be well over six feet, it must be the influence of the giraffes. As I turned to channel 8 US. the call letters of New York City appeared. DON LIST, better known fts Monsieur List, was designing dresses for the New York socialites. Today he is demonstrating his unusual techniques to a world wide video audience. On channel 9 US I see ROGER BAMBAUER, a famous lawyer, advertising his business. The only cases he will take are those of millionaire ladies who are in distress. Every case he tries becomes part of the pin-up section of his law office on Wall Street. As I further try to determine the scope of my television set, I catch LEONARD ELSHOFF, discussing a stupendous blue print with MARY KIEFER. Leonard hit the nail on the head when he began in large scale contracting. He is now guiding the workmen as they construct a twenty room mansion for Mary. She is known the world over for her famous Kief-On Cosmetics. Channel 2 US has traveled to the outskirts of Los Angeles to picture a large billboard. The main attraction is ANN FLEDDERJOHN. She is making her third appearance at the Metropolitan Opera House. She is considered one of the world's best tenors. I now see the call letters of Miami, Florida. Oh yes, on channel 4 US, BILL HENKENER is just being interviewed on a sports program. He is coach of the famous New Knoxville Space Cadets, and his team is said to be really out of this world. On channel 6 H in Hawaii, I see the opening of a large airport. I.ESTER SETTLAGE owns the air- port and from the number of planes present, it looks like it will be a great success. Turning back to the good old United States I dialed channel 5 US in Hollywood, California. They are demonstrating how motion pictures are made. The leading character is LEE DEERHAKE, working on his latest picture, The Trumpet Blues . Lee is noted in his pictures for his great trumpet playing. Glancing at another portion of the screen I see ROGER DEERHAKE, who has just arrived from Alaska for a vacation with his cousin Lee. Roger owns a large chain of department stores in the forty-ninth state of the union. The next glimpse of a classmate is SHIRLEY KUCK on channel l7 US, New Orleans. She is ready to make her forty-eighth flight as an airline hostess. This one will be to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Shirley cer- tainly gets around in the world. As I change to channel ll US, I see RUBY LUTTERBECK as head nurse and owner of the Lutterbeclc clinic iformerly known as the Mayo Clinic? . Turning to channel 3 US, I return to the great Buckeye State. In the distance I see an enormous number of black and white SDOIS. As the picture clears they turn out to be Holstein cows. It is the largest herd of cows in the world owned by DAVID ARNETT. I almost forgot abo'ft HOWARD SMITH, but then again how could I. On channel 17 US, which is Madison, Wisconsin, I sec the front of his establishment reading, The World Daily Chronicle . Being editor of the Memoir certainly put Howard on the road to success. JAMES NIEMEYER is just stepping into the newspaper of Howard. James is making daily full page ads., advertising a new kind of wool. Wool of any color depending upon the brand of feed fed his sheep. He hopes to have color-fast plaids and stripes in a few years. Oh no! not this. RALPH SCHROLUCKE has just walked on the screen on channel ll E. He is making a tour of England and has become the Bob I-Iope of yesteryear with his jokes. Ralph was just re- cently voted the most beloved comedian of the year. It is baseball time and the season has just been open for a month. JOHN SCHROER is manager of the Cincinnati Reds which is a member of the Western World League. The Reds are on channel 16 I, playing against India. John's team is currently in first place. Once more I chan e channels, and whom should I see on channel 5 US in Chicago but GRETA HOLE. Greta is superintendent of the famous Chicago School of Medical Technicians. She is finding jobs for thou- sands of girls who have graduated from her school. I have seen all my classmates except my namesake, MARY SCHROLUCKE. I wonder what has hap- pened to her. I will try channel 23 G. There she is taking shorthand notes of the world wide conference of rulers held in Berlin, Germany. She can now take shorthand in seven languages. I Now I, MARY BUDDEMEYER, being almost overcome by the pictures of my successful classmates, leisurely lean back in my easy chair, close my eyes, and wonder, can all the things I just saw be true? Filling in these positions was somewhat of a problem, but with a lot of practice the Ran- gers steadily improved, and gained much valuable experience, which should help them in the future. The Rangers won their first two games, and then ran up against a good St. Henry and a stubborn New Bremen team giving them two early season losses. New Knoxville then started a winning streak, building it up to eight games before they lost to their perennial competitor, Minster. Highly favored and undefeated Ft. Recovery was one of the Rangers victims in their winning streak. The New Knoxville team improving steadily came back to defeat Minster in their return game, but was defeated a second time by New Bremen and also lost a very close game at Ft. Re- covery in the last game of the season. The Rangers had a well balanced team. Any one of the starting five was capable of break- ing a ball game wide open for the Rangers and lead them to victory. The bench strength was also an important factor in the Rangers' success. LEAGUE SEASON The Rangers finished in a tie for the Auglaize County League Championship with Minster. The Rangers won their first three league games and were tied for first place when they met New Bremen. The defeat cost them the league championship but they still had a chance for a tie in the league. The Rangers played very heady ball defeating Minster in the league game causing the two teams to share the Auglaize County League Championship. Each team had four victories and one defeat. Fifty-Eight MEMOIR VARSITY BASKETBALL AUGLAIZE COUNTY TOURNAMENT The Auglaize County Basketball Tournament was held in the new McBroon1 Gymnasium in St. Marys. The Rangers drew New Bremen in the opening round of the Auglaize County Tournament. The Cardinals defeated New Knoxville twice during the season and had the Rangers worried. Practicing diligently for their opening game the Rangers came through in fine style, getting re- venge, defeating the Cardinals 45 to 41. Waynesfield drew a bye and became the second opponent of the Rangers. The superior New Knoxville team easily defeated the Tigers 94 to 48. This victory advanced the Rangers into the finals of the tournament. New Knoxville next met Cridersville for the Auglaize County Championship. The Rangers again put on a fine display of ball handling and marksmanship and defeated the Cridersville Rams 81 to 42. So the Rangers of New Knoxville once more attained the Auglaize County Cham- pionship and advanced to the Northwestern District Tournament in Celina. New Knoxville 45-New Bremen 41 New Knoxville 94-Wayncsfield 48 New Knoxville 81--Cridersville 42 NORTHWESTERN DISTRICT TOURNAMENT The New Knoxville Rangers drew Delphos St. John in the opening game of the North- western District Tournament at Celina. St. john was the Exempted Village and Parochial Tour- nament Champion and was the number one seeded team in the district. The Rangers and Blue Jays had a very close contest throughout the first quarter. The Rangers were leading 16 to 14 when the whistle blew. St. john gained an advantage in the second quarter and were leading by eleven points at the half. The Blue Jays came back strong after the half and with their rebounding, fast break and uncanny shooting defeated the Rangers 80 to 57. This game ended the New Knoxville Rangers basketball season and the high school basket- ball career of six graduating seniors. They then compiled a winning streak of seven victories and were defeated in their last game of the season by Ft. Recovery. Bill Henkener pitched a no hit, no run game as the Rangers defeated the Tigers from across the countv 5 to 0. The Rangers won their second consecutive shutout defeating New Bremen in the second game. The Rangers faced a tough Buckland team in the final game and were trailing until the fifth inning when suddenly they began hitting the ball and won the Auglaize County Championship game 14 to 1. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT New Knoxville drew Lafayette for their first contest of the district tourna- ment at St. Henry. The Rangers won easily by a score of 20 to 1. In the second game New Knoxville played a very good Convoy outfit and squeezed by 2 to 1 as each team collected only three hits. The Rangers played the home town St. Henry nine in the rain and on a muddy field, but managed to come out on top by a score of 8 to 5. This advanced the Ranger squad to the finals and pitted them against Gomer. In a hotly contested ball game the Rangers pushed across the win- ning run in the last of the seventh, winning the Northwest District Championship, which advanced them one step farther than any previous New Knoxville team had gone. REGIONAL TOURNAMENT The New Knoxville Rangers drew Greenwich for their opening game of the Regional Tournament at Findlay. Greenwich scored the only run of the ball game in the bottom half of the first inning defeating the Rangers 1 to 0.
