A loan for the gymnasium was passed, as was the referendum. The New Kent student body voted to change the CAVA¬ LIER annual to the REBEL. The name was changed be¬ cause there seemed to be no association between the CAVALIER and New Kent Rebels. For the first time since its establishment, New Kent held band classes during school. Our principal, Mr. Moon, allowed us only two minutes to change classes. After the two minute bell, everyone who was not in their classroom was tardy. For the first time in its history, New Kent had a separate room for the teachers to relax in. So that all teachers could be “in the know”, a bulletin with absentees, early dismissals, and notices was sent to each teacher every morning. To encourage school spirit, the S.C.A. sponsored a dress- up day on the day of every school game. New Kent and Charles City School Board separated. The S. C. A. revived Homecoming Day.
