The Cavalier NEW KENT HIGH SCHOOL FOREWORD As you leal through the 1966 CAVALIER, may you have fond memories of the days which have passed. This book will hold memories, unique to each individual who opens its covers. It is my hope that as the seniors look through the pages of this an¬ nual they will remember their 12 years of school and look happily back on their school days. I would like to thank the annual staff for their hard work and cooper¬ ation. I would like to thank Mrs. Roberts, our advisor, for her help and patience, which she generously gave to us. Anna Hollins Editor CONTENTS 5 7 11 33 43 50 52 67 Dedication Administration And Faculty Classes Activities Athletics Elementary Faculty Classes Advertisements Senior Statistics The fuel behind all verbal reasoning is in¬ formation; and reasoning is a short cut to suc¬ cess. A man needs to resurrect within himself the boy ' s passion for finding out. Young children are interested in almost everything that they see and hear. They are always engaged in the pursuit of knowledge. Men who have achieved greatly are of that temperament throughout their lives. They see and hear, they observe, they note and analyze, more than others. It is a big step toward success when a man is able to notice that there are some things he does not know, and takes action to fill the gap. To know, to get into the truth of something, is one of life ' s mystic delights. Principal We dedicate this annual, the 1966 CAVALIER, to Mrs. W. C. Cluverius, Jr., as a means of thank¬ ing her for her hard work, understanding and un¬ selfish devotion to her students. The New Kent Speech and Drama Club was or¬ ganized four years ago with the aid of Mrs. Clu¬ verius. Since that time, New Kent has won honors in the one-act play festivals and in the forensic competition. All students interested in dramatics have benefited from her guidance and direction. Mrs. Cluverius has worked unceasingly to instill in us the principles of algebra, geometry, advanced mathematics and English. We have reaped the benefits of her 42 years of teaching experience. Thank you, Mrs. Cluverius. ANNUAL STAFF LEFT TO RIGHT: Anna Hollins, Twyla Jones 6 HIGH SCHOOL Mrs. W. B. If you ' d like to win, but think you can ' t, It ' s almost a cinch you won ' t. If you think you ' ll lose, you ' re lost For out in the world you find, Success begins with a fellow ' s will: It ' s all in the state of mind. Full many a race is lost Ere ever a step is run: And many a coward fails Ere ever his work begun. Think big, and your deeds will grow: Think small, and you ' ll fall behind: Think that you can, and you will. It ' s all in the state of mind. If you think you ' re outclassed, you are: You ' ve got to think high to rise, You ' ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a p rize. JULIET LOUISE WALLS ROBERT EARL WALLS, JR. STEVEN RONALD WARD SHIRLEY MAE WAXMUNSKI JACK GENE WILLIAMS JOHN LEWIS WOODSON III 17 IN RETROSPECT Our twelve years at New Kent haven ' t always been peaches and cream. We have had our ups and downs. We have been on class trips, joined clubs, given parties, and most of all, had some extraordinary experiences. During grade school, we took several class trips. These were to Jamestown, Mariner ' s Museum, Williamsburg, Richmond, and Washington, D. C. We had our share of getting yelled at, getting sent to the office, and standing in the corner. When we got to high school, we were still getting yelled at but the teachers eliminated standing in the corner. Remember the time in eighth grade when the boys thought they would have a little fun by throwing their baseball gloves out the windows? The punishment? Picking up rocks and paper in the school yard for two weeks. Can you guess who was the only girl to be caught throwing spitballs with the boys in the ninth grade? The punishment? Standing on step-ladders washing the ceiling. As we got older, our experiences didn ' t change too much. Our junior class play, 1984, was interrupted when the backdrops fell down on top of the stage crew. Poor Sallie had to wear hip pads under her costume to fill out the big baggy jeans she wore. The stage crew broke Anna ' s lollypop and they had to tape it back together for the second performance. We haven ' t forgotten the time when our chemistry class had a riot. Chalk, erasers, soap, paper, and anything throwable was hurled from one side of the room to the other. The punish¬ ment? We were suspended from class, which meant three zeros. Our senior year followed the same pattern. It started off with a bang. While selling coffee at the shack” during the football game, we managed to spill our last jar of Pream. Unfortun¬ ately, everyone wanted cream in their coffee that night. You can imagine where we got the cream! Of course there was the time in home ec. class that Twyla and Anna tried to burn up the blender. Mrs. Harris said maybe we had better unplug it and leave it at that. Remember those melty candy bars we had to sell to fill our treasury for our long awaited invasion of New York. How will we ever forget the tasty food we were served at the banquet and the dates we had for the prom? And, last but not least, our commencement. 18 CAN YOU IMAGINE? Edward Allen not playing baseball? Pat Arthur not being in love? Edward Binns not jumping out the window? Jerry Britt doing his homework? Cynthia Brown cheering at a pep rally? Marie Burnette not being ready to help? Carolyn Chisenhall understanding everything? Bill Craft in a 66 Cadillac? John Davis with readable writing? Joel Douglas not speeding? Robert Dzula not being a farmer? Sandra Ellyson not being sweet and cooperative? Sandra Farmer not disagreeing with everyone? Joe Gray playing the violin? Gay Hadad not liking to sing and dance? Barbara Hodges causing chaos in class? Anna Hollins not eating? Chuck Johnston with his tooth in? Jeff Jones smiling? Twyla Jones not being a Yankee? Linda Mills as a professional weight lifter? Taylor Moore being serious? Dennis Mountcastle being a woman hater? Sallie Mountcastle not getting excited over James Bond movies? Cheryl Pate coming to school every day? Joe Peace editing a newspaper? Catherine Pomfrey not reading? Robert Seitz being a Barber? William Smith being noisy? Robert Walker not being polite? Julie Walls not studying? Robert Walls not saying something funny? Spike Ward getting paid for being a chauffeur? Shirley Waxmunski not giggling? Jack Williams without Miss Clairol? John Woodson not talking about U.
