Gone forever will be the routine of school life, the fun we had, and the friends we made. It is the hope of the 1953 Cavalier Staff that, as you glance through this book in the years to come, you will recapture those moments---and the echoes will begin again. Because your devotion, interest and guidance have inspired us to the higher things of life and because you have spent so many hours laboring for us so that we might obtain our educa- tion, we dedicate with deepest love and esteem, the 1953 edition of the CAVALIER, to you, Mrs. Mary T. MR. CLARENCE JENNINGS Superintendent Mr. Jennings was educated at William and Mary College where he received his B.A. degree in 1915. Visions of pleasant memories come before my eyes, Reminding me that time really flies. Now let me take you on a journey thru these years, Which have been filled with joys and fears. But above all we have had lots of fun, And look for more since our last year has begun. 1949: All of us were as green as grass, When we entered the Freshman Class. Awkward and shy and some of us blue, But Mr. Waldrop showed us what to do. With his cheerful aid we steadied our pace, And before long we felt we owned the place. Freshman elections were thrilling and fun, 'Twas then that Norwood's regime had begun. 1950: As Sophomores we had no time to slump, For exciting new events kept us on the jump. As upper classmen with sophistication, Mrs. Newton made life a great sensation. A tour of our county, dinner and skating, That trip to Williamsburg deserved top rating. Twas here we added Bob and Jess, Who fell in line with all the res'. This Sophomore year at New Kent High, Holds memories for us that cannot die. 1951: How wonderful are the memories that lie, In the hearts of us Juniors at New Kent High. Mrs. Pomfrey can tell you that we all did stand, Together, united, one big, happy band. Who could forget that trip to Washington Or any of the other things that we've done? In ''High Pressure Homer ! each was a star, On Broadway this play could have gone far! At William and Mary we saw ''The Taming of the Shrew Mr. Wells was a chaperone and Miss Hubbard went too. When looking back in future years, We'll think of this, through burning tears. (continued) Here scowls and whines are not allowed, 'Cause we're a merry, happy crowd. No grouchie souls need apply, To the Senior class of New Kent High. Again Mrs. Pomfrey got stuck with us, But, she, being good-natured, did not fuss. Peter, Beware!'' was the name of our play, I'll remember that 'til my dying day. Now these years have sped quickly by, We are about to leave with a sad, sad sigh. Through all, we've tried to do what was right, For the dear ole school of the blue and white. Through practicing plays, having classes and the rest, In all we strove for what was the best. And now we bid our alma mater a fond adieu, With the hope of nothing but success for all of you. Josephine Walls CHARLES EDWARD DAVIS No “ladies' man” is this bright lad, When the girls come run- ning it makes him sad. JAMES WALTER COUCH Long and lanky, lazy too, Our only blonde with eyes of blue. GEORGE WALLACE FISHER Handsome, shy, very neat too, We predict big things for you, ROBERT EARL FITCHETT Football, basketball, base- ball too, He's the hero of the white and blue. 10 CECIL FRANCIS BOWERY Big strong man, with a thick black beard, By all small girls he is sure to be feared, ROY WESLEY GEPHART He may be of statue small, But likewise, he's of spirit tall. aN JESS GOODMAN A basketball player, a regular guy, A friend to all, anda little shy. MARIAN ELIZABETH HOBSON Not very tall, in fact small, Her good nature is loved by all. VIRGINIA DARE KELLEY She's been in our class since the Ist grade, Our memory of her will never fade, EMELIA AGNES KURDZIEL Her twinkling eyes and cheerful smile Brighten up classrooms all the while, ll WE’ GLADYS ELIZABETH MORGAN She's the one who will always try, We know she'll win out by and by. LILLIAN MAE MORAN She's a talker long and loud Of her some day, we'll all be proud. ANNIE LOU POMEROY Like a circle ending never, Does her tongue go on forever. HUGH HENKEL RENALDS Tall, ambitious, full of fun, He'll be ahead in the long run. V2 EAVING %, . “lig a “SW eeeent?” % MARCIA ANNE RYAN Tall, red-haired, and brainy too, Many great things she's sure to do. NORWOOD FAUVER SCHULTZ He's the leader of all the sheep, But there's one girl we think he'll keep. MARY LOU SMITH Small, good-looking, dressed gal , We all like her; she's our pal, best- JOSEPHINE LELIA WALLS Cute, petite, with brains galore, She has boyfriends by the score, WHAT WE WERE Ow) fh. HAT WE MAY BECOME It is the year 1970, and the biggest Alumni Homecoming Dance in the history of New Kent High School is in full swing, Guy Lombardo's Band is playing for the big occasion in the school's beautiful new gymnasium, Everyone is here from students who went to the school in 1930 to students now attending in 1970, The new principal, Charles Davis, has just come in with his pretty wife. (Their young son and daughter had to stay at home this time.) Buster is now one of the leading educators in the nation, but after receiving his Master's Degree in Physical Education from Columbia Uni- versity and teaching several years in New Jersy, he has returned to New Kent. He is very popular as principal, but we predict that before many years he will be advanced to superintendent, Kathleen and Norwood Schultz are sweeping in, Kathleen is wearing a beautiful sable coat, Norwood played cat- cher for the Brooklyn Dodgers for several years after graduating from Randolph-Macon, but since his retirement from baseball he has become the leading advertising executive in the world, and now Kathleen collects rare furs for a hobby, Cecil Bowery is having a fine time greeting old acquaintances and introducing them to his charming Japanese wife, Shortly after his graduation he rejoined the Marine Corps and has been in for the last twenty years, He will be elegible for retirement soon, We hear they may go to Japan to live, Elizabeth Morgan is dancing with her newest husband, They have just returned from Mexico--they met while she was getting a divorce there from her eighth Mistake . Jimmie Couch and his pretty wife, the former Bessie Lee Parsley, are having a small argument with another cou- ple on the floor about who bumped who, Jimmie is one of the most successful farmers in New Kent these days, The other couple is Lillian Moran Robinson and her husband, Donald. They are living on a large dairy farm at Quinton, and at the last count their children numbered an even twenty. They have two sets of triplets and three sets of twins which have made them quite well known all over Virginia, George Fisher and Bob Fitchett are over in the corner having a heart-to-heart talk, George went to college for ten years and is now a Fegistered undertaker, He has opened a very modern undertaking establishment on the corner where Bartholomew's Store used to be, Bob was pitcher for the New York Yankees for several years, but now he is head coach at New Kent High School, Bob gives the boys a good workout, and also gives George a good supply of customers, Jess Goodman is keeping his eye on Emelia Kurdziel. The reason? Jess is now with the FBI, and he is investigating Emelia, a concert harpist, for transporting stolen jewels in her harp case, Annie Lou Pomeroy made a new record by swimming the English Channel ten years ago, She is a laboratory technician in California now, She is on vacation this month and is home visiting her friends in New Kent, She has never married, Virginia Dare Kelley, now a top officer in the WAVES after being in for 18 years, is having a wonderful time to- night making eyes at Roy Gephart. We all feel very proud of Roy because a month from now he will finally become a Colonel after 16 years in the Army. Neither Virginia Dare nor Roy married during their years in service, but since they will both be retiring soon, perhaps they'll make a match of it and settle down in New Kent, They are setting the stage now for a floor show. Josephine Walls is fixing the scenery, She kindly consented to fly down from Chicago especially to arrange it, Josie is the Dean of the Art Department at the University of Chicago and an interior decorator on the side, She has also had several books published about her theories on advanced mathematics which has always been a special hobby of hers, Well, at last everything is set, First on the program is Marian Hobson Reese and her husband Frank who will give an exhibition ping pong game, They have become professionals in the game and make $200,000 a week, We are very fortunate to have them, The lights dim, and the band plays soft strains of music. The spotlight is now on Marcia Ryan, a rising opera star, All we can say is -- The Metropolitan Opera isn't what it used to bel A modern dancer is next on the program, Her dance is odd; maybe extreme though, is the word- -so it must be and is none other than Mary Lou Smith, She is just home from Hollywood where she just completed her 12th movie, Love Them, Dodge Them, and Leave Them Alone, . Hugh Renalds just ran up on the stage; he didn't want to be left out, because he has a few words to say, Everyone is settling down for a long stay, because Hugh is known for his long-windedness since he became Speaker of the House in Washington, Hugh has been helped considerably in his political career by his cute red-headed wife, the former Nancy Taylor, They were married soon after Hugh's graduation from college, They have one son, Hugh, Jr. So on goes the dance and on go the lives of the Alumni--we wish for each of them good luck and happiness, 15 i TI—sS Sn), OOO Ee UU SENIOR PLAY PETER, BEWARE]! We will leave behind many of the pleasant and happy times we have had as Juniors and take with us the memories of those happy hours spent with our fellow classmen. Perhaps some of our memories will not be so pleasant, as we may have found our studies a little more difficult this year. Our class has had a wide variety of interests as is shown in our extensive participation in various fields. Many of us took an active part in the club activities and sports. Some of our class members participated in the forensic activities and many showed their acting ability in the class play. Last, but, of course, not least, was our entertainment given for the Seniors in late spring. Ly James K.
