Chenault was born in Jacksonville, Florida on October 14, 1914. Upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy in 1936, he was assigned to Pacific and Asiatic Fleet duty, serving aboard the U.S.S. California, the U.S.S. Luzon, and on the staff of Commander, Yangtze Patrol. ' His service during World War II included assignments to the Stais of Com- mander Task Force Five, and Commander, U.S. Naval Force, Southwest. Pacific respectively, with service abroad the cruisers U.S.S. Houston, U.S.S. Boise, and the U.S.S. Marblehead. In 1945, as Gunnery Officer on the large cruiser U.S.S. Guam, Cdr. Chenault participated in the Fifth and Third Fleet raids 'in support of the Okinawa Gunto operation, and the Third Fleet operations against Japan. In 1946, Commander Chenault served for six months on the staff of Commander Task Force Sixty Eight, and then took command of the destroyer U.S.S. William R. Rush. In 1948, he was ordered to the Bureau of Ordnance, Navy Department, Washington, D.C., where he served until 1951 as Deputy Chief of the Guided Missiles Branch, Quality Control Division. In July 1951, he was assigned to the staff of Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet as Assistant Fleet Readiness Officer. Cdr. Chenault, whose date of rank is 15 March 1944, has done advanced post- graduate work at the Naval Academy and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is married to the former Miss Catherine Fyfe, of Seneca Falls, N.Y. and is the father of two sons, David Waller Chenault, II, 10, and John Fyfe Chenault, 6. Cdr. Chenault, who reported as Executive Officer, U.S.S. New Jersey on Monday, August 3, 1953, includes the following among his awards: Presidential Unit Cita- tion, Asiatic-Pacific with three stars, China Service, American Theater, American Defense, World War II, and the Japanese Occupation.
