The Student Council is the core of student co-operation. It serves to unite the students with the administration. The Marshals usher at the graduation and Baccalaureate ceremonies. The 1964-65 Marshals were: Thomas Smith; Diane Hill, Chief; Jo Ann Anderson; Bonnie Strickland; Margaret Best; Kay Hinson; Sandra Wheeler; and Mary Hyde. D A R The Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award was given to Phyllis Smith. She was chosen on her leadership, service, dependability, and patriotism. 20 Kay Wheeless, editor, was largely responsible for the publi- cation of our paper this year. Under the direction of Mrs, Cook, the newspaper has been very successful in its third year. Newspaper Staff The newspaper staff consists of: Phyllis Smith, Linda Stroud, Brenda Summerlin, Toni Vanderburg, Jan Clayton, Delmus Walker, Kay Wheeless, and Mrs. Cook; sponsor. 21 Catching the different phases of student life was the responsibility of Margaret Best, Cornelia Sullivan, and Edith Wade Brown. Annual Staff Through the creative imagination of Diane Hill and Phyllis Smith, the new ideas of arranging class pictures were brought forth. Under the guidance and influence o f Mrs. Scroggs, the annual staff worked ha rd to make this year ' s annual one of the best possible. 22 Acting over the annual staff as editor this year was Bonnie Strickland. She performed the duties of an editor very efficiently. In charge of t h e sports section this year were Thomas Smith, Cindy Warren, and Tony Creech. Through their active efforts in basketball, football, and baseball, this year ' s sports section was one of the best. Sandra Wheeler and Kay Hinson were in charge of the activities section. They were responsible for the coverage of clubs, organ- izations, and honorary awards. 23 F F A With the help of Mr. Kneeshaw, the boys are developing their agricultural skills. The Future Farmers of America officers of 1965-66 areas follows: President, Pete Parks; Vice-President, Jarvis Smith; Secre- tary, Andy Stanley; Treasurer, Billy Long; Reporter, Delbert Daniels; Sentinel, Gary Hill; Advisor, Mr. Kneeshaw. 24 F H A Under the direction of Mrs. Kneeshaw, the F.H.A. girls are developing their home- making skills. The Future Homemakers of America officers of 1965-66 are as follows: President, Edith Thompson; Vice-President, Sherlene Garris; Secre- tary, Jan Clayton; Treasurer, Rachel Gay; Reporter, Phyllis Smith; Parliamentarian, KayWheeless; Historian, Linda Hill; Pianist, Yvonne Wade. The French students must have a 90 average before they can become a French Club member. 26 Pep Club The Pep Club consists of active members of the student body, who like to show their enthusiasm in the school activities. Quill and Scroll The Quill and Scroll is made up of students who have done superior work on a school publication. They are in the upper third of their class. The members are: Margaret Best, Cornelia Sullivan, Sandra Wheeler, Kay Hinson, Diane Hill, Kay Wheeless, Phyllis Smith, Jan Clayton, Tony Creech, Cindy Warren, Bonnie Strickland, Thomas Smith, Bonnie Hill, and Mrs. Cook; Sponsor. 27 Science Club NO SMOKING Under the supervision of Mr. Tompkins, the Scienc e Club worked to stimulate interest in all fields of science. Bus Drivers The transporting of students to and from school is a large responsibility on the part of the bus drivers. This year ' s bus drivers are: Fred Harvell, Gary Lancaster, Gary Hill, Earl Lancaster, Jimmy Best, Edith Thompson, Thomas Stafford, Kay Wheeless, Douglas Wiggins, Phyllis Smith, B. J. Person, Connie Wade, Harold Lancaster, Cornelia Sullivan, George Buck, Margaret Best, and Delbert Daniels. 28 This year we have thirty-two Gray Ladies. Gray Ladies The Gray Ladies are trained in first aid and are ready to help in any emergency. There are two volunteers pre- sent at school to take care of the m inor accidents of a school day. This year we have 32 Gray Ladies. Mrs. Connor, a Gray Lady, is shown here taking the temperature of a sick student. 29 Mrs. Summerlin has faced her duty of feeding three-hundred, hungry teenagers very efficiently. Cafeteria Staff Under the management of Mrs. Maxine Summerlin, the school dietitian, the cafeteria staff works to feed the students nutritious lunches. m Custodian Mr. Kennedy, school custodian, is re- sponsible for the upkeep of the school and the grounds. Boosters Club We extend our appreciation to the Booster Club for their efforts in acquiring our most wanted athletic field. 46 Principal Mr. J.S. King, our principal, serves as a friend as well as advisor to the many students at New Hope. Along with his many responsibilities he helps the bus drivers and advises the Student Council. His willingness to compro- mise and his devotion to the betterment of the school is deeply appreciated. Secretaries Mrs. Godwin and her assistant, Mrs. Chase, work deligently to keep the office affairs in order. They are busy maintaining school records and accounts along with giving a helpful hand to teachers or students. 48 INOfPENOENCE Dean of Students Mr. Atkinson, Dean of Stu- dents, is responsible for checking students ' absentees and tardies. He serves as Mr. King ' s right hand in the various functions of school administration. Guidance Counselor MissKornegay has helped many students decide their life ' s career by enlightening them with firsthand information of the expanding fields from which to chose.
