SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY While sitting in class a few days ago I became very sleepy and while taking my short nap I began to have strange visions. The date seemed to be 1970 and the people I saw were none other than the members of the class of 1954. I will tell you about the visions I saw. The first vision I beheld was that of Jean Matthews, now married to her old high school sweetheart. She was at her home in Adamsville. caring for her two sets of twins, and working part-time as a nurse at the Wayne Con- valescent Home, Lo and behold what should I see in my next vision but Royce Smith. He was owner and manager of his father's business, and also pastoring Daniel's Memorial Methodist Church. Then I saw Shirley Walker go into Royce's store to buy her week's supply of groceries. It seemed as if she and her husband had built a large brick house and set- tled down with their family of five children in Adamsville. George Butts had finally succeeded in becoming governor of North Carolina. In my vision I saw him riding down the road in his big bla ck Cadillac. He is not so eager to race on his Cadillac as he was on his daddy's little Ford in high school days. Beulah Thomas and Lois Anderson were working as high-stepping chorus girls in a local nightclub. Maybe that is why Billy Sutton decided to become the proprietor of this night club. Business was booming and he was about the richest man in town. Frances Thomas and Lillie Rose Benton were in New York trying out their talents. They were both interior dec- orators and were very famous. Rex Smith was still the playboy around town, and the girls were still swarming - whether over him or the swanky convertible he strutted around in - no one knew. It seems as if Mc Gee Creech and his wife, the former Miss Leatrice Smith were living in Snow Hill. While Mc Gee was busy pastoring Bethel Methodist Church, Leatrice was home caring for the five little Creeches. Ralph Kennedy was ta king life easy as president of A. C. College. He even had his feet propped upon his desk while giving dictation to his secretary, Ann Smith. Ann was living in Wilson and her husband was teaching at Charles L. Coon High School. Jimmy Teachey was manager of the Western Auto Store in Goldsboro. He could hardly keep enough parts for the I-lot Rods the boys were driving around. He complained that he couldn't sell them any speedometers. George Newcomb had finally achieved his ambition. He was working in Stanley's Funeral Home rolling dead peoples eyes for dice. Then I saw a doctor. It was none other than Cooper Hinson. He had just astonished the scientific world by announcing that he had found a sure cure for broken hearts. Maybe that is whyall his patients were ex-girl friends. Then I saw a man inside a boxing ring. lrecognized the man and it was none other thanCecil Boyette. He was just proclaimed as the hea vy-weight champion of the world. Billy Wood was still managing to be a bachelor. How can he help it when all the girls were still chasing after him? ln my vision he was headed towards Seven Springs. James E. had all the girls swooning over his new record hit. He was making a world tour and had just signed a contra ct to begin a new T. V. show when he returned from his tour. Annette Lancaster was teaching the third Grade at Walnut Street School in Goldsboro. She and her husband were living in their new home in Pikeville. Billy Smith was an executive at the DuPont plant in Kinston. Jo Ann Gurley was an airline hostess for T. W. A. She always did like the wide open spaces. Reynolds was staying in Washington, D. C. He had such a good time when the Senior class went there that he decided to return. He was a special agent for the F. B. I. James Da ly was on the Goldsboro Police Force. When I saw him he was standing at the corner of Walnut and Slocumb Street directing traffic so the school children could cross the street. In my next vision I saw a jet airplane streaking across the sky. Sitting in the cockpit was none other than Dan Smith. He was testing the jet for the Air Force. Joann Howell was a receptionist in Dr. Benton's office. Nellie Lane was a telephone operator at the Southern Bell Telephone Co. in Goldsboro. Linwood Lewis was ta king up tickets for the merry-go-round at Virginia Beach. Dot Smith was leader for the Brownie Troup at Adamsville. She had on her uniform and looked more like a Brownie herself than a leader. Larry Whaley had just opened up a newspaper office. The name of his pa per was the Ada msville Tribune. Mollie Moye was tea ching the fifth grade at Rosewood School and she and her husband were ma king their home in the Rosewood community. And I, la net Rhodes am planning for my second wedding in June. I am also writing a column in the News Ar- gus. The name of my column is 'Advice for Broken Hearts. 18
