Language Aris Siudenis Develop Reading Skills Mrs. May, Mrs. Murner, and Mrs. Adair taught in the Middle School Language Arts Department. As in the past these teachers worked to develop their students' reading, speaking, and listening skills. They encouraged student participation in cre- ative writing and spelling contests. Fourih Graders Have Aciive Year Miss Barbara Walton Miss Pamelia Wiginton The fourth grade instructors this year were Miss Walton and Miss Wiginton. During the year, the students worked toward developing reading and math skills. In addition students we taught Alabama history, science, and social studies. As a classroom activity, Miss Wa1ton's fourth graders raised gerbils. Thompson lnsirucis Ari The Art Department was headed by Mrs. Linda Thompson. Students from grades 5-11 participated in an art curriculum including shading. texture, charcoal, pastels, inks, and acrylics. Mrs . Linda Thompson

Miss Walls Joins Social Qludies Deparlmenl Karen Walls joined the Social Studies Department in the Middle School this year. Other instructors were Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Phillips. The students heard State Senator King discuss how a bill becomes a law. They also heard Representa- tives from the Democratic and Republican headquar- ters speak on elections. Later in the year, James Record, Chairman of the Madison County Commissioners, and Robert Spears, District 3 Commissioner, spoke to the classes on county government.
