ass.Hisi'o1'y I am just an inanimate old school building, but if I could talk, I could speak volumes on the experiences of various classes and teachers who have passed through my halls. Today, however, I am thinking par- ticularly of the Class of 1944--a class of so much life and buoyancy as to keep teachers constantly 'on their toes.n I will be sorry to see them go, for I shall miss their peals of laughter and their eager voices rising high in argument. In their freshman year Mr. Ealy, whom they highly respected, was their home room teacher. The biggest event of the year was the time of their graduation from junior high school. For their Class Day exercises John G. Butler was valedictorian, Charles O. Butler was salutatorian, and George Butler, Jr. was historian. During the sophomore year of this class, many changes occurred. Owens Cross Roads and Farley sent pupils to me, and Mr. Rowe Chapman became principal instead of Mr. S. L. Mathison. This year the home room teacher was Coach Claude L. Smith--and a grand one he was. In a masterly way he led the class through frogs and worms of biology, until they literally wriggled their way into the junior years This next year saw Coach Smith leaving for the army, and Mrs Defen- derfer assuming his place as sponsor. The class entertained the seniors with a memorable trip to Cullman. They also presented as their class play UGeorge in a Jam,N with Mrs. Mattie Roberts serving as director. On the night of the performance people left my auditorium feeling fine from laughter. In the senior year the Class of '44 elected Ima Gene Mann, Joe Led- better, Laura Cobb, and Martha Alice Hamer as their officers. My rafters shook when their class meetings turned into class Nfree-for-alls.N At the end of the first semester their sponsor, Mr. Phillips, left for the navy, and Mrs. C. T. Hereford became their home room teacher. Mrs. Ess- linger agreed to assist the class in planning the graduation exercises. The outstanding social event of the year was the delightful banquet that the juniors gave them in December. Another outstanding event was the senior class play, 'Spring Fever,' which was given April 21. The characters were James Hindman, John G. Butler, June Turner, Ima Gene Mann, Sytha Jane McCulley, Laura Cobb, Eugene Perkins, Helyn Martin, Thomas Syler, Martha Alice Hamer, and Charles O. Butler. The action of the play took place in a college town just before commencement, and things really happened! A long and audible sigh of relief resounded through my halls when the weary Staff, with the assistance of Miss Elizabeth Carpenter and Mrs. Martin Marsh, finally completed the yearbook and rushed it off to the publishers. And now, as this class of 1944 reaches the end of its sojourn within my halls, I can do no more than wish for each a fuller, richer life for having spent a few of his impressionable years within me. 12 --Charles Owen Butler
