The aim of the 1956 Leoninus staffs has been to depict in pictures the highlights of your four years in t New Holland High School, and to recall to your memory the changes that have evolved even during the lifetime of each of us. We have chosen the theme Futurama i You hold the product of the staffs in your hands, not only the book-but the verdict. We hope that you will find us guilty in the sense of a job well done. 3 1 DEDICATION To you, Mr. J. Kenneth Herr, this issue of Leoninus has been dedicated out ofthe heartfelt thanks of each member of the senior class for the many times we have turned to you in time of need for guidance in the many problems confronting us in our high school years. Your readiness to help in time of need and your genial manner have brought you very near to those who have been under your guidance for the past years. Beyond the words of counsel and advice stands the splendid Christian character of a man who truly lives the creed he professes. This, Mr. Herr, we recognize above all else. This dedication is our way of expressing a sincere thank you for your unselfish atten- tion to our problems. We hope that in this way we may partially repay our debt to you. 4 APPRECIATION As a token of their appreciation to all those people who have helped in any way to make their school life a fuller and more fruitful one, the class of 1956 has chosen to dedi- cate this space to a small, but sincere thank you message. To our parents who stood by with understanding and wise counsel, to the each and every one person on the school staff, and many others who have made the way a little easier for us, this space is dedicated as a fragment of our gratitude. In the busy schedule of our school days we may have overlooked many of the kind jestures extended to us, but behind these words, in the minds of each one of us is embedded a deep gratitude which will grow ever more meaningful as we face the life of tomorrow. And so, to you, whatever capacity you may have influenced us, we pause to extend this grateful note of thanks for helping us along our way of preparation to face a new and different world tomorrow. 5 1956 LEONINUS STAFFS Business Staff STANDING: Shirley Crouseg Doris Miller. He is knocked out cold by one of his experiments and wakes up to find himself in the Court of King Arthur. From then on, the striking contrasts between the old and the new develop into a series of ludicrous events. Television, radio, aviation, football, and even the corner drugstore find their way into the kingdom of Arthur through the influence of the enterprising young engineer ...... who eventually finds himself in hot water. But allis well that ends well ...... and the CONNECT - ICUT YANKEE is no exception. SYNOPSIS OF SCENES The Prologue: A living room in Hartford, Connecticut. Time: The Present. We have searched everywhere for you, Mrs. Faulkner 30 GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY In this unique dramatization, the scene is the court room of the Superior Court of the state of New York. Bjorn Faulkner, wealth financier and iron hand of the business world, was hurled from his luxurious penthouse to the ground far below. Police investigation reveals murder and entails difficulty as to the true hand behind this horrible plot. Two women ruled his life-and his death. Karen Andre, his secretary, who was on trial for his murder, and Nancy Lee Faulkner, his new bride. Both these women were accused of F311 this murder. ' Witnesses, called upon the stand to testify, added to the brilliance and excitement of the l performance. l Jurors were selected and called from the audience. The fate of the defendant, Karen N -I 6 Andre, rested in their hands. As the' curtain rises the spotlight shines on us, the class of 1956. As we peer at the stage we are reminded of the many happy and constructive years we have spent in New Holland High School. Act I now opens and we, junior high students, are entering high school. During those formative years we encountered many obstacles and new experiences which were a part of our adjustments from elementary school to the varied life of Junior High School, Gala parties, doggie roasts, scavenger hunts and producing a Minstrel Show comprised our extra curricular activities and provided fun and frolic. Act ll pictures us as Sophomores. Traveling to Hershey to see the Harlem Globe Trotters was our major activity. As the drama of our school years unfolds we are reminded of how elated we were when we received our class jackets and rings. Happy memories also accompany the production of our Junior play, wllhe Night of January l6th.7' Act Ill portrays us as Seniors for we have at last reached the closing scenes of our class drama. We have been very fortunate in being the first Senior Class to have been granted two senior class trips, namely to Washington in October and to New York in March. Action, thrills and excitement were expressed in our unusual class play, 'LA Connecticut Yankee in King Arthuris Courtf' As the climax approaches we hear strains of Baccalaureate hymns followed by the traditional Pomp and Circumstance of Commencement. Diplomas have been issued. As the curtain closes we hear the phrase from our Alma Mater, 'gas sons and daughters going forth, add glory to thy namef' UNDERCLASSMEN . . . Promise of the Future. After considerable time and effort, the council drew up the first constitution for the Student Council. One of the very first projects of that Student Council was an effort to start a Lancaster County Student Council Organization. They were very successful in this project, and the first County Student Council Convention was held in New Holland High School. Although only nine years old, our present council is very well established. Our con- stitution was revised last year and by-laws added, but our aim and objectives remained the same. The aim of our council is to bring the students and faculty into a closer relationship, to create a better school spirit, to coordinate the activities of the school, and to promote the general welfare of the student body. Student Council sets up a median between the student body and the faculty, and through this it tries to create a harmonious relationship and also a high standard of school spirit. We have been well represented at our county, district, and state conventions, and also at the previous national convention. 49 OFFICERS SEATED-Nancie Fraizer, Secretary, Kenneth Yoder, Vice-President. Quill and Scroll is an international honorary society for high school journalists. lt was organized in 1926 for the purpose of encouraging and rewarding individual achievement in journalism and allied fields. There are now over thirty-five hundred chapters, totaling eighty-thousand mem- bers in all. Many tasks are undertaken by the society. From its beginning, Quill and Scroll has sponsored contests in different iields of creative work. Qther duties include the organization of state press associations, criticism of manuscripts and publications, establishment of better relations between school and community by means of conditions for supervisors and teachers of journalism, and the acquainting of school oflicials and the public with the value of high school journalism. High Schools which publish a newspaper, an annual, or a magazine, considered of suliicient merit by the executive council, are eligible for a charter of Quill and Scroll. According to the constitution, members of the society must be selected from high school students who meet the following requirements: C12 They must be of at least junior standing. 12, They must be in the upper third of their class in general scholastic standing, at the time of their election. Howard Rutter SPEAK FOR YOURSELF Millions upon millions of times a year the, words New Hollandi' are printed in 4-5 countries around the world. All of this is part of New Holland's advertising and public relations program designed to sell farm machinery. The words are seen in advertisements, booklets, catalogs, folders, letters -and heard on radio, heard and seen on television and in motion picture theaters. And all because a product canit really speak for itself . In a sense, of course, a good product satisfies the owner and he tells his friends. But by and large itis advertising, public relations, sales promotion that speak for the product. ' Most folks today have no personal advertising and public relations pro- gram-at least none that costs a sizable sum of money. But you can speak for yourselfin many ways-thanks to the education and training received in your schools. Education today is a musty for anybody who needs to sell himself. And whether you're going directly into business-starting a home-or going on to further education, there's always a need for selling yourself to your friends, co-workers, and families.
