Wayne, Indiano All doors were important to us in our search for suc- cess. We journeyed through doors of classes, friend- ship, and inexperience. Each new word we added to our vocabulary, each new smile, and each new en- counter had a lasting and enriching effect on our lives. Incentive from our parents, teachers, and friends, along with pride in ourselves and our school, were the reasons for the long hours of labor and the sac- rifices that we mode. Confidence in our fellow students, whether it was the team or the supporters in the stands, mode us raise the roof with school yells and congratulate our boys even when a game was lost. All of these we remember with fondness. All of these have made us better citizens of tomorrow. The first occurrence of a hootenonny lent a note of originality to this year ' s Student Council Halloween party. Featured were amateur and professional tal- ent. There was also a dance in the girls ' gym. Another Student Council-sponsored event was New Haven ' s annual Christmas dance, the Snowball Hop. This year ' s theme, Winterlude, was carried out with decorations denoting an old-fashioned Christmas. Music was provided for dancing in the cafeteria while refreshments were served in the girls ' gym. At 1:00 a.m. everyone gathered at Goeglein ' s Barn for the after-prom party which continued until 5:00 a.m. Tired and exhausted from an exciting evening well-spent, everyone looked forward to the next prom. m ' M I m W ' M.. RUDY ' S Hardware, Housewares, Garden Shop, Gifts Laughter and smiles often serve as a fundannental basis for a well-rounded student body. The carefree and leisure moments experienced by the New Haven students are a welcomed port of school life. We learn to attach to these moments a set of values, for we strive to experience them in the proper portion. Laughter breaks the simple routine of daily life as it finds its way into the classrooms, halls, and spirit of those at New Haven. A cheery hello, pleasing smile, or a witty remark strike a note of pleasure with all as the year passes by. We at New Haven are grateful for these priceless moments. Although it appears to be frustrating, these girls find that smiles creep into such moments as this. The New Haven faculty has been growing steadily in proportion to the rate of student body increase and is now comprised of 50 teachers. New teachers have been added in the language, math, social science, and business fields, which indicates added interest in these areas. One of our science teachers, Mr. Ken- neth Bondelier, has taken a temporary leave of ab- sence in order to gain additional training. The faculty members not only instruct their classes but serve in various added capacities which contribute to the student body ' s general well-being. Many serve as organization and class sponsors or advisors and guide school activities toward a successful conclu- sion. These efforts are appreciated by the student body and the administration. Sporting events are viewed by enthusiastic teachers. Noon hours allow a brief deviation during a busy day. KAYSER HOUSE OF BEAUTY 103 Decotur Rd, at Paulding Rd. The literature classes expose the students to a background of the various types of literary writings. Students of the speech classes acquire more experi- ence and confidence in relating their ideas to others. English serves as the basis of life, and here students are taught all the factors of the subject. All eyes are glued to the board as Mrs. Null reviews a few aspects of American Literature. An unlimited amount of knowledge can be obtained in tfie library. The methods of speaking that these students learn in debate will be of great aid in future years. The language teachers— Miss Burke, Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Seger, and Mr. Steinbach— instruct their students re- garding the language, customs, arts, and background of the country with which the language is associated. A student studying a foreign language is better equipped to study our own English language, since many English words are derived from French, German, and Latin. Proving a geometric theorerr Mr. HumI demonstrates the fundamentals of math to on attentive audience. AAATH AND SCIENCE-PROMISE OF TOMORROW Students study geometric figure and designs on the bulletli board. 28 Students of today, leaders of tomorrow are encour- aged to meet new goals In the science department, through courses such as biology, chemistry, physics, botany, and zoology. Through these courses students learn about the world in which they live. They also learn what their own bodies contain and how each of their systems and organs function. They are trained in these courses by skilled teachers and mod- ern teaching equipment. The mathematics department also encourages the students to be leaders of tomorrow. Algebra, geome- try, and more advanced courses teach the students to think for themselves and solve problems that con- front them in classrooms and in real life situations. The students in the math department learn by doing. Again, students aren ' t just born leaders. They achieve goals through hard work and experience in both the science and math departments. The NISBOVA contest requires practice, practice, practice. The music and art classes ore strictly elective subjects for Interested students. Just having interest, however, is not enough to qualify a student, for membership. He must have a certain grade average and some degree of potential. These courses have been designed to allow to stu- dents to express themselves and to become better acquainted with the finer arts. Two basic features stand out in the various arts of- fered at NHHS. One is that students learn to combine their efForts and work with a destination in mind. Another is the opportunity to excel as an individual. There is always plenty of competition. STUDENT COUNCIL Loraine Holden and Kothy Kummer are seen put- ting the finishing touches on the Snowball Hop decorations. The communication link between the student body and the administra- tion is the Student Council which is composed of an elected member from each homeroom, a member-at-large from the Senior class, and four officers. From the politics of the election last spring came the present Student Council officers who are Edie Sallot (President), Rick Moinord (Vice-President), Dee Rice (Secretary), and Linda Richhart (Treasurer). In the busy second weeks of school the Council put up fire signs and elected the Reserve cheerleaders. The new records for the aftergame dances are purchased each month by the Student Council. After com- pleting the plans for the Halloween party, the Council industriously be- gan to prepare the Snowball Hop. The Winterlude theme was pre- sented with cozy, old-fashioned Christmas decorations. The latter half of the year is reserved for a project, varsity cheerleading elections, and campaigns for the spring election of ofRcers. Cross Country is a sport which is often considered to be less demanding than others. This is a fallacy! A good cross country runner must possess great desire and determination. Cross Country practice begins in the middle of August. Most of the practice time until school starts consists of getting the feet, legs, and lungs in shape. To make the team, a runner must cover the qualifying course, which is about 2 ' 2 miles, in less than twenty minutes. When school begins in the fall, daily practice sessions are scheduled, which last about two hours. In prac- tice an individual runs about five or six miles. The meets are held at either ShoafF Park or Franke Park and the course is about two miles long. The Cross Country team won seven meets in the regu- lar season and lost two, finished eighth in the Short- ridge Invitational, first in the NEIAC, and fifth in the Sectional. 1963 Record New Haven 29 Concordia 28 Central Catholic Forfeit 23 Central 38 25 Kendallville 34 35 North Side 20 18 Elmhurst 43 26 Huntertown Leo 38 24 Central 34 20 Angola 43 15 Bishop Luers (Won 8, Lost 2) 50 Shortridge Invitational 8th place N. It begins in November and ends in February with the State Basketball Tournament. Dur- ing this period New Haven plays between twenty and twenty-five games. Practice starts immediately after school in the High School gym. The first part of practice is devoted to shooting. The next part is devoted to working on defense and offense. Practice sessions usually end with scrimmages and some conditioning exercises. Most of the games are played on Friday or Saturday nights. At this time the gym is usually packed with fans who hove what experts call Hoosier Hysteria. BILL CHAPMAN LANDSCAPING SERVICE 525 U. S. Often the reserve game is considered as a mere preliminary to the main event but it means much more than that. It is here that the future hardwood stars of New Haven receive their training. It is here that they receive their initiation into the rigors of competition with other players of equal or superior ability and learn to adapt themselves to competitive situations. In truth, the basketball future of our school is deter- mined by the performance of these reserve squads and the quality of instruction they receive from their coach. They have placed at our disposal many keys with which to unlock our futures. The doors through which we hove passed in high school have enabled us to fashion a master key with which to open doors of future education, vocations, and greater spiritual development.
