The newest organization in the New Haven High School, the Theta Rho Chap- ter of the Future Teachers of America, was organized on December 1, 1948, by four seniors, Gene Critchfield, Carol Glaze, Jacquelyn Richhart, and Wanda White, who wish to enter the teaching profession. The F.T.A., sponsored by Mr. Myron Henderson, intends to learn the oppor- tunies of teaching, to learn the character qualities essential to teachers, to study the lives of great teachers, and to foster the development of student leadership. The officers of this new organization are: Wanda J. White, president: Gene Critchfield, vice-president: Jacquelyn Richhart, secretary: Marceil Vodde, trea- surer, Robert Whitacre, historian. ff-.mamma Signing out books, dusting books, and keeping them in order are some of the many duties of the librarians. The librarians also help students to find infor- mation. The student librarians may work at the desk only, or if they have a B average and are approved by the principal, they may take the library course for credit. amazed! The Student Council became affiliated with the National Association of Stu- dent Councils in October, 1945. It was organized to promote school activities, to develop a respect for school property. to provide for the general welfare of the student body, to make the school a happy place for mental, moral, and physical development, and to aid the administration in furthering its policies for the betterment of the school. The council is made up of one representative from each home room and the president and vice-president of each class. All council members must maintain a UC average and have no failures. Members are elected not later than the fourth week in September and serve for a period of thirty-six weeks. The activities of the year included the revision of the Student Handbook, the conducting of the election for cheer leaders, the arrangements for the Thanks- giving Convocation, and the sponsorship of the Snowball Hop. The Student Council, under the able supervision of their new sponsor, Miss Rowena Walker, was under the leadership of the following officers: president, Wanda White: vice-president, Don Meyer: secretary. The Masque and Gavel Society was granted a charter in 1941 and ever since it has been striving to recognize, promote and assist the student in raising his standards of speech in any area of speech in the high school or community. Activities of the year included the appearance of Wanda White, Ervin Kle- ber, Don Putt, Gene Critchfield, and Bob Whitacre on the City Desk Radio program, two initiation ceremonies, a Christmas potluck dinner party and a comic gift exchange, a play for P.T.A., several speech contests and various activ- ity programs.
