Meet 040' 7eam Clinton Moehring C223 better known as Doc has played three years for New Haven. Doc will not only be missed because he was a great ball player, but also for his guidance as captain and his fine attitude throughout the year. No finer tribute can be given than to say Doc played for the team. Dick Lantz C993 playing his first year on the varsity turned in some fine perform- ances. Dick was just arriving when graduation interfered with a promising career. Melvin Hemsoth C663 the country squire, has done his share tor the past three years. Squire furnished us with some thrills this year, particularly in those overtime wins from Elmhurst and Decatur. The ability to hit when the chips were down would best charac- terize Squire Hemsoth. Kenny Hanefeld C553 has played on the squad two years. No player worked or trained with more diligence. Kenny's strong point is his ability to steal the ball from the opposition and dash down to score. Don Miller C923 the blond curly headed idol of the junior class is a new comer on the varsity squad. Mathemataically speaking Don is to a ball team what a sparkplug is to an engine. Miller certainly believes in giving what you have to give while you are in there. Next a junior with a flair for pretty girls and a love for basketball, joe Wright, C443 joe uses his head as well as his hands in the game of basketball. Are the Bulldogs looking for some good leadership? Might not be a bad place to look. Confidence is the making of a ball player. Bill Bolyard C773 found it and was hard to stop. Bill's speed enabed him to handle the ball well on offense and still get back to protect the basket on defense. Butch Stellhorn C913 is the only boy on the team big enough to eat hay. We all remember that game in which Butch made six out of seven fouls. l-le has a knack at it or a lot of luck. The big boys are surely handy to have around on a ball team: they seem to be able to get the ball off the backboard. Were we talking about New Haven's Piulldogs? Fritz Poeppel Cll3 has the tenacity and determination characteristic of them. Fritz could be counted on to hold the good shooters down and still do his share on offense. Art Hemsoth C883 the boy that can sneak them in from underneath deserves his full share of credit for the team's success. Art seems to know where the ball is going to be when it comes off the backboard. New Haven can use boys with Arts height and ability. A sophomore, Hubert Burgette C33,3 made his letter this year. Though an un- derclassman Hub shows ability and with more drive can make a tough boy e in there at center. This concludes our little session with you about the boys and their assets to the ball team. We could tell a few things about them that they wouldn't want to hear, but since they have been good sports throughout the year, we will be good sports too and forget these few incidents, which would make some of the players blush. lee e K 01,4 14re 511114094 Withoiit youth Democracy would never succeed: and without opposition youth would never develop: therefore New Haven has, for the past number of years, had basketball as its major sport. The Bulldogs have the distinction of winning the Allen County tourney more times than any other school. The New Haven Bulldogs enjoyed a successful season during l940-l94l. To show you how successful this season has been, we have arranged a sports broadcast touching on the highlights of the season and the individual achievements of the players, who were responsible for the fine record achieved. Thank you: Now we'll get under way. The Bulldogs started fast with a thrilling win over Leo's Lions: then added five more wins to the victory column before being checked by a strong Central Catholic team. This loss proved to be the beginning of a mid-season slumo which cost them a chance to win the Blind Tourney and the County Tourney. Finally hitting their stride with a win over a good Berne team, the New Haven lads finished strong with six wins in their last seven games. The most important of these wins and the one that probably gave the players and fans the most satisfaction was a 38-3l conquest of a Central Catholic team that had per- viously checked New Haven's winning streak. ln the Sectional New Haven drew Lafayette Central as tral as the opposition in the second round. The outlook was through good team play New Haven was victorious. In the s its first opponent, with Cen- none too bright: however, econd game, despite the ac- curate shooting of Miller, the defense Bolyard showed in stopping Washington, and the excellent play of the team, Central proved just too tough. So ended the l940-l94l season of the New Haven Bulldogs. The scores of the gam i are as follows. ' N. H. 28 .. .. .,,,.,,.......,, . Leo N. H. 39 ..,.,,,,,, Decatur C. N. H. 37 ,,,, ,,.....
